Driving my Porsche 992 PDK with NO Sports Chrono Package | PDK Review & System Feedback

- I ordered my new Porsche 992 PDK with no sports chrono package. Every review of the 992 911 Carrera when launched said you must order the sports car with sports chrono. But you do not need sports plus or the response button to get performance from the car driving on a public road.
The 718 Cayman I owned before this new 911 was also a PDK but it also did not have the sports chrono. It had been ordered by the dealer as a demonstrator without it. Using the PDK paddles in normal mode and also sports mode only was enough for what I needed.
So I chose when ordering my new 992 Carrera 2 to leave it off again as I had lived without it on the 718 Cayman and felt I didn't want to spend the extra money.
My main reason for not wanting to have the sports chrono package with my PDK setup was really down to how much I dislike the stopwatch on the cars dash. I cannot have the system without it so chose to leave it off.
This video explains access to both sports and wet drive modes from the buttons and the PCM system. This includes the normal or sports chassis change buttons.
After that I show you while driving the 992 how the PDK system works in normal mode and how the drive modes work without the sports chrono package. This includes ways you can get a performance response without the sports chrono button.

It’s good to see you ordered the car without sports chrono package. I’ve ordered mine without, and I can’t believe how much “hype” there is with everyone’s opinions on saying “sports chrono is a must” why? Here in Australia they are only old men who drive Porsches and not even half of them would change out of normal mode. I’m 30, an ex racer and I don’t see the need for sports chrono in a base 992. Especially for the road. My license doesn’t need it. The base 992 is amazing as is without it.
That's exactly the way I see it and why I wouldn't pay extra to option it if it wasn't already included. The sport button was more than enough for me. I do remember all the car reviewers saying you must order it when the 992 S first came out. I guess it was a press thing from Porsche when they were lending the cars out for reviews.
this has been my dilemma also. Speccing a cayman for myself and was not sure if I should get Sports Chrono or not. I do not plan to track the car or anything, just driving to work and some twisty roads on the weekends, but thats it. Since I am on a budget, it comes down to Sports Chrono or the wheels and color options I want. I am leaning on the wheels and color. Only thing that is holding me back is everyone says "Sports Chrono is a must have". Am I missing something?
@@ronin120 you get a sport button standard on the pdk which will be on the centre button area. With the sports chrono you will get sports plus and then an individual setting. The individual setting will set things to however you want as soon as you turn it to that position for a few features. Plus you get the centre button that gives you 30 seconds of performance settings for say overtaking. I have had a 718 and a 992 back to back and neither had the sports chrono. I never missed it. The sports button and the step down technique with the accelerator was more than enough for me. People just include alot of the options for resale value. Added options on a base model dont hold as much value later as the base model price on depreciation trends. If it makes more sense cost wise to buy the higher model with options part of the base price do that. If you dont want them dont order it.
My suggestion would be try a car with the sports chrono on first if you can and see if you really think you want it.

Dynamic engine mounts & individual mode are the big sellers on SC. Mostly because you can save individual mode to remove auto start-stop.
It has it’s merits definitely if you do want to add it.

Hi Steve. I have the sport chrono package on my 911, but I don’t use it much since I don’t track the car. The sport mode is useful as it provides better performance, and when engaged, also keeps the engine oil cooler. Cheers 😎
Hey Gilbert! I didn’t know that about the engine oil being cooler. I’ll have to keep that in mind. It’s getting quite hot here now and I was out last weekend for a while in the car. I think it was topping out over 107 degrees C. It’t not often I get it that high day to day.
@@Get10Yards yes I found that out with my Cayman when the oil temp went well past 200 degrees f. Someone told me to put it in sport mode, and the oil temp went down.

I did order mine with the Chrono - I was a little concerned with faffing with buttons with my left hand, I had throne on my 718 and liked the dial control on the steering wheel. Is it worth the extra cost? Not sure, but I also like the clock on the top of the dash.
However, I drive mine everywhere in Sport, I don't have a clue about the effect on consumption but I don't get far on a tank!
Ah okay. I do enjoy having it in sport but I feel bad about it when I’m commuting back and forth to work. I’m never going fast enough to think it’s a good idea to have it on. I do think I might as a feedback video maybe do it for one full tank and see how much difference it makes to the cost!
hi, based on your experience, how much slower on 0-60 mph can a carrera 4s be without sport chrono? I would be interested because i've found the perfect, for me, used 991.2 4s (even with PCCB and lightweight battery) but without sport chrono.
Well as far as I am aware the sport chrono incorporates the sport button function that will be there on the 4S. Just not the sports plus which modified the settings further. I don’t think you are going to notice much. We aren’t talking seconds difference if you check the specs of the models. It’s points of seconds
Do you have the extended fuel tank? 411mi is great range!
No I didn’t get the bigger 64L tank. That 400 range from fill up disappears fast when you arent doing long range trips at higher constant speeds. I will be doing longer drives in it soon. So I will be watching how the fuel goes.

As far as I know yes thats correct. You need to have it in the sports plus mode on the sports chrono.

You need sports chrono for launch control. It requires sport plus mode.
Have you tried the coasting mode?
If you mean the cruise control I have tried it but I never use it.
@@Get10Yards it’s actually not cruise control. It’s something that you can use to disengage the gear so it’s like coasting in neutral.

@@nwin784 I have just looked it up in the driving manual and I understand what you are talking about now. I never knew that was there but to be honest with the driving I do on a daily basis I would never get a chance to use it effectively. Looks like it will work with either cruise control on or off as well. I will see if I can get it to work while I am out in the car, if I can I will see if I can add a video about it at some point.
Preserve your 911. Keep it off the track

Hi Pat. I believe you need the sports plus feature. I have checked all the videos online and I also went to the driver manual inside the cars PCM and it states you need to have the sports chrono package for the launch control feature. It then goes through the steps. I have actually tried the steps on hand with just sport mode on in my car and it does not activate launch control. I believe you do need the sports chrono on the car.
