Unexpectedly GOOD Strategies in Fighting Games

We all talk about the strategies that are obviously strong, but here we are talking about the ones that are either so bad sounding that you couldn't possibly imagine they're actually good, or they sound very niche but are actually core parts of the game.

I thnk games that involve "ranking" ingame, is a bad idea for competition play. Cause casual players will copy pros that and fail in ranked game, like league of legends "why we have shit feeders in ranked". But games like old school cs 1.6 with no ingame ranking, just pure shoot em up fun. was better for competitive play, cause if you failed, it wont effect your "rank" but just your gameplay.

The "death" of Splitgate does and will always continue to sadden me. While the game didn't officially die, its popularity dropped off so fast and then the devs immediately went into maintenance mode to make Splitgate 2. While that game was just announced, and I am excited for it, the "Halo With Portals" gameplay seems like the perfect innovation for multiplayer shooters. It seems like the perfect sort of game to get that deep, dedicated grassroots competitive scene, but in the years since Splitgate's release, the only Splitgate tournament I have ever heard of was one the developers did a few months before the announcement of the sequel.

I have been saying for years not every game lends itself to esports at all. Not every game even lends itself to an online *competitive* scene. As a gamer in my all time top 100 games a game like League of legends does make the top 10 but that is because I love competition ever since I was little and that is exactly why people pick up league of legends. And so do a few other competitive video games. Football games are somewhat fun online even in ranked. But honestly I don't play football games for online competition either. Then I will just go play real fucking football you know? Yeah, harsh but true. The same goes for racing games. People love online racing but the main reason they do so is because real life racing is really expensive. And then there are games like Warhammer 1-3, which no doubt has a staff that would love to see it blow up and become the biggest thing ever! But it's just not that type of game lmfao. Imagine your tiny brain reaches the following conclusion: Balancing Zombies for competitive. I can only laugh my ass off at such utter stupidity. By definition there are many games that are only fun because of the way the powerlevel scalings are completely ridiculous. It's like people playing bullet hell games. Not because they want a fair challenge. But because it's feels so good to play a game that is seemingly insanely difficult. In return bullet hell games often also offer the player with insanely powerful bonuses and level ups. I might sound salty but honestly, I have seen so many games come out with ''patches'' balancing single player experience. I can only pull my hair out at how incredibly dumb some balancing teams are. And to be real, even a game like Warcraft 3 falls prey to it. Balancing units that are nearly 25 years old and this patch is what you play on when offline as well. Balancing should never work like that in games that are also enjoyed offline or single player. And yeah, even multiplayer games don't really work when they try to perfectly balance everything. I would actually argue the exact same for games such as Pokemon. Pokemon fanbase endlessly argues balancing but maybe it's for the better that Nintendo and Gamefreak never went to hardcore on weekly patching. Trust me, it's going to result in a World of Warcraft type of experience. Every single Pokemon can do the exact same things at the exact same levels just with a colour that matches their typing. This is dystopia level of capitalism. My red colour hits your green colour super effectively for 20 damage. OMG NERF.

you just can't force esports its a moneysink where a much smaller budget for marketing might have the same impact. What works is tapping into an existing playerbase as seen in LOL or dota2 which both just improved on the dota concept and most people moved over. Similar for cs:go which was targeted at 1.6 players.

I hate the focus on e-sports that games have, which results in overcompetitiveness in games. Like OW having people flame you in casual gamemodes for not picking what they want, or League having maximum toxicity in casual gamemodes. Back when OW launched I played quite a bit and I played casually and it was a lot of fun. Now I can't touch the game.

Idk if "unintuitive mechanics" is such a serious issue. I mean mobas have TONS of unintuitive mechanics and people still play those to death. I think there's also a really big issue you didn't mention which is that fighting games are 1on1 which makes them much harder to have fun in as a new player since you will always lose. In a team game you win like 40% of the time usually even if you're completely new

I think explaining a simple gameplan for each character in the tutorial would be a great job for on-boarding newbies. I've taught a few dozen new players fighting games and using the "think, don't mash" video series method of teaching is the absolute best. I like to get new players to the "why" of fighting games as quickly as possible. All the moves on the move list are just the "what" and it distracts new players from getting to the cool decision making that is what actually keeps you hooked. Learn a very simple gameplan and a small list of tools and get right to making real decisions in a match instead of trying to mash out specials randomly. Then as a player gets more comfortable with those tools, provide them with tutorials for the rest of their movelist so they can learn the uses and purposes of other moves. The other genres are easier to get into because they have simple mechanics like "point at dude and shoot dude" so we've developed an innate understanding of those genres. So when new editions to the genre come out, we can expect them to be 90% the same in terms of mechanical execution. Meanwhile no 2 fighting games(even within the same series) really play the same. We have a lot of work to do but content creation can def help us get there

I wouldn't ve surprised if cancelling into Light AirSlasher would be intentional, but i have no proof. What i do have is the knowledge that SNK in particupar, in the Fatal Fury series, does this intentionally. In games like Mark of the Wolves, you can cancel normals into Feints for certain blockstrings and combos. And, in City of the Wolves, they preserved abd showcased it. So if a company that Capcom's been familiar competition with does that intentionally, and Dee Jay's meant to have better pressure than Guile for that charge archetype, him having cancels into light slash makes sense to me. It's just not something I'm used to from Dee Jay/most SF characters (closest I can think of is Dan in 5)

Kids today that are growing up with a homogenized, hyper-commercialized gaming industry are missing out on so much of what made them important and memorable before, and they have no way of knowing it. Same with everything, I guess. Movies are mostly samey and soulless attempts to cash in on every world market at once. Food is commercial, mass produced, and trend-marketed. The I ternet is ruled by a handful of megacorps that decide what you see. The internet peaked somewhere around 2005 or 06, and there's just no going back on most of it.

“Given the opportunity, players will optimize the fun out of a game” Ultra competitive games feed this badly and in the end players with this mentality will do everything in their power to break a game for an advantage no matter how balanced it is a meta and an advantage will be found that upsets the game balance. Never balance a game around the top players it ruins the game for the average player and quickly makes a stale environment. Create a balance where the AVERAGE player can play any character. In pro play let those players and the community figure out the broken characters and discover strats against them or straight up just ban them. Melee and smash bros in general is a great example, Fox and Falco are overly oppressive but despite that every once in a while out of left field we get stuff like a Yoshi player or Jigglypuff dominate despite being "bad" competitively. On the flip side Steve has been so oppressive in Ultimate that the community as a whole decided to ban him in a lot of tournaments. In a way the community and players themselves are creating balance by taking it into their own hands to decide what is acceptable in a competitive setting all without harming the playing experience for the average player. Just implement a ban system for in game ranked to the average player so devs can balance the game for those players by looking at ban rates
