Why Aren't Swing Wing Aircraft Made Any More?
Go to ground.news/droid to access data-driven information from around the world. Subscribe through my link to get 40% off the Vantage plan for unlimited access. From the mid-60s up to 1981, swing-wing aircraft led the way for new multirole aircraft that combined the low-speed stability and efficiency of a straight wing with the high-speed performance of a swept wing and led to some of the most famous fighters and bombers of the 70s, 80s, and 90s. But from 1981 onwards not a single new aircraft was built with a swing-wing design. In this video, we look at why this happened.

Proximity fuses did not and cannot make a shell more accurate, it just means that it detonates when close, it turns what would have been a miss to something effective by blast proximity.
The Tomcat was well suited to its role as a fleet air defender, capable of operating on a carrier, loitering at long distance from the carrier and keeping Russian Bear bombers anc their cruise missiles at bay. But it never overcame its three major shortcomings; a badly paired engine and airframe (even after the TF30 was replaced in the D version), its analog nature, and its massive radar cross section. It was the right thing to do to retire it after 30 years of service, to devote those funds to more modern F18 Super Hornets. It is a pity though that only a handful survived the boneyard cutters, albeit for obvious reasons.
Same reason why X-29 are only technology demonstrator ....... the material scenice don't catching up yet.......plus F-14's maintenance cycle and cost way too expensive
5:50 A war in the Pacific did not of course "rule out" the B-17, which was widely used in the Pacific. As to B-29s having problems getting off the ground with a full load the obvious solution would be to decide they were fully loaded at a lower weight. It's not like the maximum weight wasn't recalculated for every mission.
GRAMMAR! - You are comparing only two items! Therefore, there is only ":better" and NOT "best" so go apologize to your English teacher and thanks for sharing a very interesting and well researched video. Best of luck! LOL
Because advances in aerodynamics, and control systems made them obsolete.

This video is a bit of fun, action starts at about 30 seconds. czcams.com/video/J_Mh3dsln9M/video.html this is also contained in the longer video, which shows some other party tricks, dump and burn, a wheels up belly landing, and other sus stuff. I have first hand witnessed some of the best crazy Australian F111 action but cannot find any video of these anywhere. czcams.com/video/QRdKv4cLiL0/video.html I almost forgot, still in some of the top 10 fastest jet aircraft lists and those lists include the the SR-71 and its class mates as well as the X15.
hi - film student here with a fair amount of armchair knowledge about analogue and digital image capture and some actual experience. RED digital cinema tend to over-advertise the dynamic range of their cameras - 17 stops are advertised but in reality a good few of those stops are very deep in the shadows or the highlights and are basically just noise - they're not "clean". once the footage is graded even a little bit any information in those stops will likely be crushed to black. in essence, it does not have 17 *usable* stops of dynamic range. arri alexa cameras, on the other hand, will only advertise usable stops - and the newest one, the Alexa 35, does indeed have 17 usable stops. it would be the best non-engineering digital camera for filming launches like this i think. that said film is probably still better where it's possible to use it. that being said, engineering cameras which used 70mm film were actually still used on the artemis i launch, for all of the reasons you described - of course, they weren't used in the livestream because you can't livestream from celluloid, so there were most likely digital cameras as well for that purpose. or another potential reason the digital footage of the artemis launch flared so particularly badly - it's possible the livestream was taken from the "video tap" of the 70mm cameras. with most modern analogue movie cameras (many feature films are still shot on celluloid) there is the ability to take a reference video feed from the camera while also shooting to celluloid. this feed is usually fairly low quality which would explain the low dynamic range of the livestream footage.
Heavy, complex, difficult to maintain, and we now more about aerodynamics now to make better fixed wings
Th is a load of crap. Temperatures inside the van Allen belts reach 25K°F. The heat Shields on the rockets were only good for about 3K°F. You do the math. Ps 3 1/2 and 2 1/2 hours are NOT "short Burt's" of radiation exposure. A short burst would seconds. Total misinformation & junk science. From the looks of this guy he's been exposed to far too much radiation.
It’s hard to find the space for the landing gear to retract with a swing wing aircraft. They have to have the landing gear which is already big and bulky for navy aircraft do complicated rolls and folds to fit into the aircrafts fuselage.
When Captain James Stewart first saw the B-58 Hustler, he said it was the most beautiful machine he had ever seen.
One word = stealth.

Got a feeling that the new F-15EX could get the all time altitude record if they really wanted to pursue it. Maybe one of these days soon!
Maintenance , weight, mass, stress fatigue. And the development of fly-by-wire technology allowed for very different fighter designs with critical instability. Greatly improving handling, capability, safety and fly-ability. And using leading edge flaps and wing route extensions for greater lift when need. With many minor computer controlled adjustments each second. Allowing thinner wings with greater lift and much easier and stable landings. Built in instability can improve maneuverability but make flying difficult. Computers can overcome that problem and make aircraft safer to fly. The center of balance can be changed. Route extensions also added lift with less mass and volume. Stealth could also be problematic. Next generation fighters may also lack vertical stabilizers to improve stealth while retaining control and stability. Using fly by wire. And may not have bubble cockpits for good observations. Relying on sensors instead. High G dogfighting being a less important factor. And may not have variable exhaust ducts like the F-22. Even pilots may be optional. Computers doing most of the work anyway. It is not easy to keep pilots away from fighters.
LeMay never indicated the vehicle was "bad". His and other USAF (pronounce Yousaf) planners did not see a viable vehicle with range or payload. Political turf had a lot to do with a machine that would be a one way mission if push came to shove
6:38 Left is red and right is blue. Deal with it. "red scare". "we'll keep the red flag flying here."
I got to touch an F1 11 at an air show in Adelaide about 30 years ago when I was about 10 years old. My step dad at the time worked at Edinburgh in SA lol I got to sit in a Blackhawk too
It was USSR that won WWII.
I will go with "because it was an expensive and complex system with a bunch of new points of failure that and modern technology has greatly reduced the benefits of to a point where it is no longer practical."
Thanks for another engrossing film, curious. At work the morning after watching a memory emerged that could be relevant. I can sketchily recall a Mikoyan space plane that was orbit capable, but had the neat facility - like Buran - of being able to be ferried around by attached jet engines. Anyone else heard of this?
Russian solders have won the War
Astronaut phone call to Pres Nixon had no delay !!!
NIce video. But this new AI video de-noising algorithm that you use is just so distracting. Why not let old grainy footage just be old grainy footage?
That's because each engine was custom made by WW2 Germans with 40 years of rocket experience. The design was relatively simple for rocket engines compared to today, yet the highest degree in combining science and art in the history of mankind up to that point in time.
Good content but not a fan of you embedding sponsorship like it's part of the story you're telling
Ok what about the b1 lancer surely that is a variable swing wing right?
Does anybody remember what the hammer was for on the AIM-9 maintenance toolboard?
why are there 15 to 20 locations ????? all over the planet ????????????
Since as a kid a love how the F14 tomcat looked and had a toy with a swing wing that was so cool up until now. But as I grew old knowing the more moving parts are there the more headaches to deal with.
Hey I didn't know Frank Gambale had an aircraft channel
The video starts at 15:12
TU-160s are still being developed
Copied not Developed!
So once again the Americans had to rely on German, and British technology.
Essentially, the weight, complexity and non-stealthiness of the swing wing system was its downfall.
Laser mounted on ship cannot intercept hypersonic missile because the range will never be enough. The laser has to be mounted on a plane like YAL 1
I don't want to be a niggler and a nanny, but the Russians have two very fine swing wing bombers in their inventory right now. TU22M Blinder and the TU160 White Swarm. Two freakin' beauties.
Excellent, accurate and in-depth coverage! Thank yu.
