I was watching with my family. When Saleem Malik got out, at 140/4 with 8 per over required, most had pretty much given up but my elder brother kept believing by pointing out that we were ahead of NZ at that stage, and had been throughout the chase. The fact that Miandad was still there was huge, though of course nobody anticipated what Inzi was about to do. Another distinct memory is that when NZ were forced to bring Deepak Patel back on, my brother went "Iss ko tou Miandad sambhaal le ga" and he promptly square cut the first ball for 4, and ended up scoring 8 runs in the over on his own. I think from NZ's perspective they missed a trick by not bowing Morrison to Inzi as soon as he came in. He'd bowled him out cheaply in the group match, and was the quickest bowler in their attack. Here they stuck with their medium pacers, who tbh had served them well throughout the tournament. But there was a sameness about them, which Inzi took full advantage of. Other random comments: Inzi, Aqib, and Mushtaq had toured Australia in 1989 for the U-19 World Cup. Aqib had played in two straight B&H tri-series in 1988/89 and 1989/90, the latter of which Mushtaq also played in. The core of this squad in general had a ton of experience playing cricket in Australia. The Inzi six off Harris was all the more remarkable as he hit it into the (extremely stiff) wind, and it almost didn't make it. The six Moin hit off Harris was his first six in international cricket. The team didn't have the 'poor chasers' tag attached to it at the time, that came later in the 90s, which ironically was as much a function of how we won the 92 final that batting first became the template for us and we eschewed chasing. But up until then our greatest ODI wins ever had come in run chases - Australasia Cup final in 1986, Nehru Cup semi-final and final in 1989, and then of course this match. Another hill I'll die on: people remember how unfair the rain rule was for South Africa or that Pakistan were lucky with the rained out game against England. But the Pak vs SA group match was extremely unfair on us. Chasing 212 we were 74/2 after 21.3 overs i.e. needed another 138 runs at 4.8 rpo. It rained, target was revised to 194 in 36 overs or 120 runs off 87 balls at 8.3 rpo. So they took away 14 overs while the target was only reduced by 18 runs. To their credit, Inzi and Imran gave it a good go, but ultimately fell short by 20 runs. I am fairly certain we would've won that game without the rain interruption. This result would have meant a) South Africa wouldn't have qualified for the semis b) the Pakistan v England group game would've been irrelevant.

The only reason in favour of Bumrah is that he bowls in an era where the pitches are way more batsmen friendly. Then how can they earn run a ball, against, currently best fielding and bowling attack of India with Bumeah, Hardik, and Arshdeep? That hope is nauve, and Imad Wasim sort of said that in his post match interview that how Pakistan was caged by Indian bowling in death overs. Losing to 2024 Indian team was destiny .
