What Was Ocelot Up To In Metal Gear Solid 4?
What was Ocelot up to in MGS4?
Is he really possessed by Liquid? Ocelot always has a secret and MGS4 is no different. Usually, Ocelot’s secret plan is somehow related to Big Boss, but BB is gone by MGS4.

Capcom’s confirmed they’re working on a new Resident Evil game! Can you believe it?? If RE9 focuses on Jill, we could see her grapple with her time being mind controlled by Wesker (as she touches on in Resident Evil Death Island). Jill feels like she has a lot to make up for from her time under Wesker, which she could work through in RE9! Or RE9 could focus on Chris and how he may be headed dow...

    Ocelot's true goal was to destroy the Patriots AI, and the only way to do that was to fool the system. The characters in the game don't work together because they all had to play their part in tricking the system, and this was Ocelot's plan from the start. Everything that happens in MGS4 is all part of Ocelot trying to free everyone from the Patriots and by staging a huge trick on it, even the rail gun wasn't meant to actually work

    The AI mdoels would have been trained on data controlled by Zero. Zero was a bit of a nut who believed in various supernatural things. He would have ensured that the AIs would take his beliefs into account, ostensibly including the possibility of possession via the attachment of body parts. AIs are powerful, but do not have common sense What boggles my mind is where anyone got the notion of spiritual powers being heritable or genetic. That's a dumb idea and I think people need to just accept that they were dumb to think that and are still dumb for clinging to that notion. I was postulating that it was hypnosis, acting, or some mind/voice altering technology before mgs4 even came out, so there have always been other choices

    Was he good? Was he evil? Who can really say? But i know what he was in the end: he was right. Although if he succeeded in killing Raiden, the Patriots would've never been taken down, so there's that, I guess. Also, something no one ever talks about is his legacy. His final monologue had him confess that all he wants is to be remembered, preferably for liberating America. In Revengeance (no, I'm not gonna get into whether it should be canon or not, so don't bother), we see that he IS remembered. The catch? He's not remembered as a revolutionary or a freedom fighter. He was remembered only for his use of child soldiers. Kevin says the words "George Sears, a.k.a. Solidus Snake" with vitriol and disgust. Desperado's project to kidnap children and mold them into miniature Raidens was named "The Sears Program" after him.

    I think in mgs1, Naomi is mostly bad, but then basically has a change of heart (at least due to seeing she was wrong about Snake)-but it doesn’t come off well. She’s acting like she has a right to withhold vital information from Snake about the virus she injected him with. That’s the one major writing flaw in mgs1 that I actually mind. In mgs4, I think Naomi is kinda supposed to be a femme fatale who turns out to have a basically good goal with dubious methods. Here I think she is severely let down by bad writing, which inadvertently paints her to be worse than she really is. In my experience, what people notice most about her is that she manipulates our beloved Otacon, betrays us for seemingly no reason, pretends to flirt with Vamp even though she doesn’t seem to have any good reason to, and then kills herself for no discernible reason before the mission is even complete (jfc whyyy) Now, this might be unfair to the more noble motives Naomi really had, and ignores her rationale for the deceptions. But that’s how it comes across, and the record never gets cleared up well. When Naomi dies, it’s immediately after she was pretending to be evil, and still way BEFORE we learn the truth about her, so it doesn’t hit the right note at all. She finally has a postmortem message that reveals she was a major player in a behind-the-scenes plot to defeat the Patriots, but it’s too little too late. And in my own view, it’s so confusing what her plan was, it’s hard to figure out how much of it may or may not have been justifiable. Also, everything Big Boss later tells Snake about her is strange. Apparently, Naomi discovered at the last minute that Foxdie II means Snake doesn’t have to unalive, and somehow she sent a message about this to Big Boss. Okay… so then why didn’t Naomi tell Snake this, before she unalived? Make it make sense. :/

    The ending seems to indicate that (1) Ocelot, Eva, and Naomi wanted to revive BB, and that (2) they could *only* revive BB by disabling the nanomachines keeping him in a coma, and that (3) they could *only* disable his nanomachines by first destroying the Patriot AIs. That seems a bit excessive! Are we supposed to believe they can't disable his nanomachines some other way? It's hard to understand the technology, since so little info is provided. But one way to interpret this may be that the nanomachines are reliant on some kind of remote operation by the AIs, via wireless signal. If that's the case, then can't they block the signal some other way? Maybe they could surround BB in a lead bunker to cut off the signals. Or, why can't they just remove his nanomachines? Medical tech is very advanced in the mgs world by this point in the timeline, and they've already had a lot of BB's limbs and skin (?) replaced by parts of Solidus and apparently Liquid. So why can't they, like, drain BB's blood and give him a transfusion of someone else's compatible blood? Wouldn't that remove most of the nanomachines? Or are the nanomachines stored in his body in some way that makes it harder to remove than merely via the blood-- like in his spinal fluid or marrow or something? Apparently it's easier to destroy the Patriot AIs than to do more medical or mechanical procedures to remove or disable the nanomachines in ANY other way. That's hard to fathom!

    @Megaritz Před 3 dny

    I think my take is similar to yours, on a lot of this. The scene between BB and Snake is hard to make sense of, as a scene between two characters in the world they inhabit. It feels purely symbolic, pandering to the player who has played all the games. There are pros and cons to this. But it seems the characters themselves are sacrificed to an abstract drama about the very concept of the successes and failures of attempts to pass stuff on to the next generation, and some kind of meta-commentary on how Kojima feels these games have grown out of hand. Or something along these lines-- there's a lot of online essays & videos trying to unpack what exactly is the message, so I don't mean to insist this is precisely it, or to deny that it does have some depth and layers thematically. But it doesn't mesh well with the characters on a non-symbolic level. We, the players, have spent time seeing a more positive BB in mgs3, and hearing in mgs4 how BB was against the Patriots (who we're also against). So it's easy to come to think BB isn't so bad. Well, maybe so, that could be debatable. But from the standpoint of the characters, within the game universe, it's bizarre. The last time Snake saw BB, it was in Zanzibar Land, and BB was ranting and raving about endless war, and they tried to kill each other. So it's hard to make sense of either Snake's or BB's behavior in this scene, when trying to actually see things from their perspectives within the world they live in. Of course, Snake has experience with reconciling with someone he's tried to kill-- like gray Fox. So a scene of reconciling with BB *could* potentially work. But the story would need to work for it, to show us how it can make sense from the perspectives of Snake and BB, given what they've been through. The story doesn't do this work, and just coasts on symbolism instead. I think this is a serious weakness to the story.

Why was he in the market for arms??? Or was it just a trophy...?

  • @Megaritz
    @Megaritz Před 3 dny

    Here's a possible way to make sense of why there's a grave for BB, despite his opposition to the Patriots. I note that the government seems to have not respected The Boss despite all her sacrifices for them, yet they still made an anonymous grave for her. So maybe there's a similar dynamic here. And while Zero isn't calling the shots anymore, the AIs seem to have inherited his respect for BB. So maybe it makes sense for the AIs to keep BB in a coma (like Zero would have done-- and already did, in MgsV), *and* to make an anonymous grave for BB (which seems like what Zero would have done, as well). Still full of plot holes? Yeah. Dozens of them, I think, and big ones. But the grave doesn't seem hard to explain.

  • @Megaritz
    @Megaritz Před 3 dny

    I'm rewatching this after about a year, along with several of your other videos. I'm not sure you're correct about the orientation of BB and Zero at the start of the scene. There may be a bit of minor camera trickery where the characters teleport around a bit between shots, which is common to all the games (as shown by emulators + freecam). But it sounds like you're saying BB entered from a different angle from where Zero is placed, and I don't think that's correct? Look closely at the scene when BB first shows up. Zero is partially visible right next to him from the start, even though Snake doesn't notice him until a while later. To be clear, I think mgs4's ending is full of bizarre plot holes. And BB tells Snake a lot of things that are really hard to make sense of, such as Naomi's role, etc. But I don't think there's anything weird about the placement of the characters within the scene. Also I want to reiterate that Snake definitely visits Big Boss's grave (not The Boss or gray Fox), as shown by how the grave says "193X - 1999". The 1999 year narrows it down to BB or Fox, the only two very important characters who died or "died" in 1999. And Fox was born in the 1950s at the earliest, whereas BB was born in the 1930s (according to PW). So it's BB. That's not 100% confirmed, but it's the only option that fits the evidence. That (partly) answers one of your main opening criticisms, although I think the bulk of your criticisms are still basically correct. EDIT: Oh okay, I see you did acknowledge it was BB's grave (or likely to be BB's grave) in the followup video. I'm re/watching that one now. But basically I'd say the closest we have to concrete evidence on whose grave it is, is what's written in the concrete (the dates).

  • @Megaritz

    I feel like a core claim here is that Kaz was working with Skullface during ground zeroes. That could use a separate further analysis. I'll look into confirming whether the Japanese VA for Kaz is in that tape-- the video would be stronger if it stopped a moment to prove this, although I assume you're probably right. (I'll also look into whether Futurasound talks about this in his analysis of the Chico Tapes, which I've endlessly delayed watching.) Next, is the idea that Kaz is *present* at Camp Omega at the time, or could he be on a speaker or something? When is the tape happening, relative to the mission? Did Kaz have enough time to travel between Camp Omega and Mother Base? Also, Kaz is on the helicopter where Paz has the two bombs in her, and he appears to be nearly killed as a result. This indicates at least that he probably didn't know when the bombs would go off, which raises the question of what he was thinking *if* he was complicit in putting the bombs in her. Also potentially important is that in PW, Kaz basically says he knew Paz was a Cipher spy-- but then in ground zeroes, Kaz appears to imply he didn't know she was a Cipher spy. Not sure what to make of that, but seems likely to tie into this.

    Snavid is a brilliant nickname for Solid Snake 😛 Ocelot is the true main character of the series so his motives were always in question whenever I saw him show up. Ocelot was clearly madly in love with Big Boss though so under everything he did I knew that BB must be involved in some way, shape or form. He probably knew that BB would die from Snavid's FOXDIE anyway but perhaps BB's wish of returning to zero was good enough for him to sacrifice everything to make it happen...Then again, this is Ocelot we're talking about, perhaps we'll never *truly* know 😛 You're pretty good! 👈😜👈

    I believe that in MGS 2, Ocelot was *actually* possessed by Liquid. In that game, whenever he gets possessed, he speaks with Liquid's voice, as opposed to MGS 4 where he just has 1 voice. In MGS 2, Ocelot also has a normal, human arm, while in MGS 4, he has a bionic arm. Therefore I believe that sometime after MGS 2, Ocelot cut off Liquid's arm and regained control. And then decided to use the new opportunity to set up a plan to free Big Boss, using the consciousness of Liquid. And I suppose it makes sense that it would be easier to trick yourself into being a different person via hypnosis when you were previously possessed by them

      @TheFamousChang Actually, MGS4 rectonned every lore that was stated on the original three parts. Liquid Snake really did possess Ocelot if you played MGS3 Snake Eater on the scene after Big Boss escaped from his torture. It confirmed how Liquid was able to possess Ocelot. Sigint gave Naked Snake information about the Sorrow, who was well known to be one of the Cobra units who have a relationship with the Boss, and she was forced to kill him to complete her mission and had a son from him. The Sorrow has a supernatural ability to communicate with the dead and has them possess his body. Even in the opening of MGS2 Sons of Liberty, there was a hint that Ocelot inherent his father ability, when he shot down one of Sergi Gurlukovich men, and seal the door, he said to his corpse "the Colonel will be with you soon comrade." Meaning that he is talking to his ghost. Even liquid is important to Ocelot's goals. This is why Ocelot has a part of Liquid in him to carry his flesh and spirit to carry out his plan to destroy the Patriots.
