    Last of the Time Lords does have a reset ending, but Martha, Jack and the Doctor really have to work and suffer to bring it about. And the telepathic satellite system is all seeded earlier in the story, so it makes sense. Whereas just suddenly dragging Sutekh through the vortex makes no sense. You might as well have the Doctor just shoot out some regeneration energy into the vortex.

    This is one of the worst episodes of Doctor Who I’ve ever seen. Absolute nonsensical tripe! And we’re supposed to think Sutekh has been clinging to the Tardis all this time including when it was dispersed in Frontios! RTD’s writing is garbage. If he’s not content spoiling the Doctor’s characteristics he’s spoiling a classic villain like Sutekh by having him look like a crappy digital graphic and defeated by being dragged about on a dog leash! Intelligent rope we’re told! 😂 Nothing special about Ruby but she can conjure up snow! 😂 RTD also doesn’t have a problem having a 13 year old using weapons on his disability scooter! 😂 Modern Who is style over substance because the substance is badly plotted and incoherent. Great reactions.

  • @yorkshirespider-man

    The episode started well but the Sutekh defeat and reveal of Ruby’s mother fell flat for me - she’s been built up as this mythic figure that didn’t pay off and the ending should’ve been more emotional but it didn’t help that we’ve had only 8 episodes and the Doctor wasn’t in two of them properly

    I loved all the stuff with Sutekh I think Russell showed how big a threat he is and I like the way they defeated him personally they were all my high points of the episode. Also I would say that Russell said that some things will go on Ito season 2 and you will look back at the end of that and be able to get a better idea of certain threads. I’m assuming he doesn’t just mean Mrs flood

    Well, glad that load of tosh is over! My biggest concern that season 2 has already been filmed and RTD will still be delusional that he's the saviour of Who after Chibbers! For me the biggest joy of this episode was once the reset button had been activated and all those planets came back to life, the first one the Doctor mentioned was Vortis! The ZARBI are alive - hooray! Right enough of this twaddle - when is the Season 7 live review being schedule for?

    Completely agree with you guys about the ending being acted and done really well but because the groundwork wasn’t done due to lack of episodes and the two main leads being separated for so much of the series the emotional weight didn’t hit in the way it used to in series 1-4 for for me

  • @johng5859
    @johng5859 Před 4 dny

    Great reaction, and I largely agree with your assessment. The visuals were great, and the apocalyptic scenes in the early part of the episode conveyed Sutekh’s power effectively. Ncuti gave his best performance so far, and the farewell scene with Ruby at the end was quite touching, even if it didn’t feel fully earned given the relative lack of time they have spent together. Mrs Flood also continues to intrigue - it hasn’t occurred to me when watching, but others have astutely pointed out that she is wearing clothes previously sported by companions, the white cloak being a notable example. On the negative side, it was clear from early on that RTD had raised the stakes so high that he had boxed himself in and would have to hit the big Moffaty reset button - consequently, the deaths of the UNIT gang left me cold, as I was already 99.9% certain that they would be brought to life again. Sutekh was defeated too easily, given how effectively his power and threat had previously been conveyed, and RTD’s attempts at whimsy with the whistle, the leash and the spoon felt overly contrived and annoying. The big Ruby’s mum reveal was also underwhelming, if not entirely surprising given we were told in Space Babies that Ruby was completely human. However, I don’t buy that Sutekh would have been so interested in Louise just because he couldn’t see her face, and why was a teenager in 2004 wearing a cloak? Was she a fan of the Scottish Widows ads? I also find it hard to believe that Sutekh could have clung to the TARDIS for so many years without being noticed, or that some of the situations the TARDIS has found itself in wouldn’t have tested his ability to hold on, but we’ll just have to let that go, I guess. Anyway, after a very uneven season it will be nice to get back to your classic reactions now…

    • @Farsight-nc1ib
      @Farsight-nc1ib Před 3 dny

      Pppppl that whole thing was impossible and an appalling retcon. Sutekh was never in the Vortex, he was in the time corridor, which was a completely different thing. Sutekh was dead before the TARDIS took off from the cellar, so the whole thing was nonsense. They were so desperate to convince people, they even changed the special effects for the corridor to those for the Vortex.

      Absolutely spot on!!!! Thing that gets me is RTD does know how to write and edit great Who. The man wrote some of my all-time favourite stories - Midnight, Waters of Mars. Even as a fan from the late 70s onwards, I can appreciate the 9th/10th Doc eras as the equal of (and in some ways better than) the classic series. Wtf has gone wrong since then? (And 11, 12 did have some great moments to be fair, but Moffett’s era was patchy)

  • @MichaelPhillipsatGreyOwlStudio

    You poor, poor, guys! You have no idea what you're getting into. And I was listening to the intro and I was like "Paul's not going to get any of what he's hoping for!"

  • @ronniehazelhurst9078

    The best thing I did as an old school Doctor Who fan was walk away in 2017. Didn't bother coming back for the Tennant specials, and certainly wouldn't watch this stuff. I still enjoy real Doctor Who 63-89 and Smith & Capaldi's era, but once they decided that the show was just a vehicle to promote social justice, they lost me forever.

  • @Starfilter1
    @Starfilter1 Před 5 dny

    All I could think of watching this episode was how insufferably smug all the goodies are. The Doctor, Ruby, Rose, Morris, Kate, Harriet, all the UNIT hangers on, Uncle Ted Willis and all... They're supposed to be the heroes but there isn't an iota of genuine likeability about any of them. They are so infuriatingly pleased with themselves! And at least one of them can't act for toffee. Mel and Susan Triad are the only people I actually cared about by the end because they're the only genuine characters with good actors.

  • @ronniehazlehurst1429

    I hated this series. However my biggest bugbear with it, isn't the forced agenda, it isn't the weak plots and poor writing, it's the main man himself Ncuti Gatwa. When he was first cast we kept being told by all and sundry what a magnificent actor he was. I've now watched him in 9 episodes, and I can honestly say, he's the worst actor to have played the Doctor in 61 years. Every time he opens his mouth I cringe. he isn't acting, he's just playing himself. His delivery of the line about being the last of the time lords (yawn RTD) was pathetic. Like something out of a school play. Hopefully Disney won't renew for a series 3, and we only have to suffer through 9 more episodes of this banal badly written badly acted rubbish.

  • @altinaykor364
    @altinaykor364 Před 6 dny

    I love how you became emotional in the second part of the video 💗 as someone who didn't watch this show at the time of airing and only watched it recently, which means no nostalgia effecting, I also say this era is also the golden age! And I didn't just started watching it for Tennant, I fell in love with the show in the exact series 1 and became attached to Christopher Eccleston the way I thought I was going to resent Tennant for replacing him, but no, only one Christmas special was enough for me to fall in love with him and that alone says a lot. some people try in a petty way to bring this era down because of what a disappointment Davies turned out to be in the new era but honestly, my answer to them is, then we should hate every masterpieces in the world only because of their creator. like how Eric Kripke who was the show runner for the most popular era of SPN. if somehow Eric Kripke does something everyone dislikes, we should just disregard the masterpiece which created for the first five seasons of SPN entirely? I don't think so. so Davies and those people can say and do whatever they want. doesn't make this era and what its cast and brilliance it had, any less of a golden age.

  • @johng5859
    @johng5859 Před 6 dny

    Welcome Joe! Having now watched Empire of Death, I can say definitively that this was the best episode of the season, and no coincidence that it also felt like the most traditional (though it was noticeable that the UNIT team did not contain a single able bodied white male). This was the first time all season I really believed in the Doctor-Ruby relationship, the time window stuff was very well handled and Mel feels a much more rounded character than she was in the 80s. I also enjoyed the Doctor’s chat with Kate about Susan - I am convinced we are going to see her at some point, as she has been mentioned so many times recently that it would be a crushing disappointment if she didn’t appear. However, looks like we will be waiting another year at least… Susan Triad turning out to be the monkey, rather than the organ grinder, was a clever twist, and the cliffhanger was really good, perhaps the best RTD has come up with since the reveal of the Master in Utopia. CGI Sutekh looked quite impressive, and it’s lovely that Gabriel Woolf was able to come back to provide that marvellous voice again. Just a shame Empire of Death didn’t quite live up to this, but more on that next time…

  • @paulhunter6178

    As a regular contributor to your channel - I've been waiting for you to post this reaction, so that I can share my thoughts. I found this a real chore to watch, but couldn't work out why. So after a few hours thought, it hit me as to what I've found off about this season so far. It's taken until this episode to realise that I feel like I'm watching a first draft of an episode - it's as though RTD has such confidence in his ability as a writer that it fails to get a redraft. The pacing is terrible. Would you really just park the whole Susan Triad thing (someone giving technology to the world for free, that you think is based on TARDIS tech - nothing suspicious there!) and wallow in Christmas memories of someone you only met a few months ago? Let me think? Free worldwide technology or who's the mummy? Which would be the biggest concern to you? Had the episode started with Ruby at home looking for the VHS to show the Doctor, we could have then dispensed with all the pointless characters (Cherry and Mrs Flood deserved better). Why did the radio on Cherry's bedside table show the time as 15.08, and in the next scene UNIT still gabbing about Susan Triad's broadcast at 3pm? Time Window? UNIT barely has the brain capacity to switch on a light bulb, so which scientific genius is supposed to have built this creation? Osgood Senior (The Daemons), Malcolm, Petronella Osgood, Shirley? Oh, and what is the stance on employing kids in 2024? Sutekh's return wasn't that shocking considering RTD ripped off that classic scene from Pyramids of Mars in The Devil's Chord. By why change the way his looked? Surely such an iconic classic enemy defies CGI? When Harriet is listing the various gods, I half expected to hear her utter the words: "There is RTD the God of Storytelling, where none can resists his words" For me, this episode was a HUGE disappointment. I've no faith that RTD can pull a satisfactory resolution out of this pile of Space Babies Filled Nappies.

    Loved this very entertaining episode. It’s scary, funny and moving. Loved the historical setting. Loved the aliens and their motives. Love Ncuti as The Doctor. Such great charisma and energy. The cool bit is maybe a different side of the Doctor. If we kept the William Hartnell type Doctor all along, doubt the show would have made the 1970s. Love William Hartnell btw. I feel all the actors personalities do reflect somewhat in their Doctor. Looking forward to series 8 reactions and the series 7 review.

    Not a cowboy hat, Liz is wearing a very Brian Jones style fedora (yes, the guide said that back in the 90s) and a very short skirt….

    I think it’s a good story, but way too long. A common problem in the season, indeed the era. But it’s better than the Silurians (it’s certainly better musically!!)

    My concern about the Doctor's attraction to Rogue was nullified when I rewatched The Girl in the Fireplace... seeing David Tennant talk to, what, an 8-year-old girl, and a minute later that little girl is in her early twenties and he's kissing her. The Doctor cries at the end of the story at Madame de Pompadour's death, missing out getting to travel and snog her. For Rogue, I had to recheck my biases and realize I was full of it. Having seen a couple hater CZcamsrs trying to tear down every Gatwa episode (and CZcams's algorithm showing me more and more hate videos) I had to turn to other reaction youtubers to ground myself and see that new fans have no problem with Gatwa at all.

    Loved your comments about this one. I'm gay and I was not a big fan of 'Rogue'. My two fears about this series, (and other Disney series), are 1) the audience will come away with the idea that all LGBT+ relationships are shallow, and 2) having LGBT+ characters in every episode, in every series, will have the opposite of the desired effect, and that instead of audiences sympathizing, that they will grow to hate us, or at the very least, be annoyed by us. Representation is great, but I think we are verging on overrepresentation.

      We've had a few comments similar to this and I have to say I read this earlier and felt genuinely upset that it had made you feel this way. I obviously wasn't a fan of the episode but it would be terrible if the show's direction was to actually impact people this way.

    I love a bit of gay flirting, but I don’t need it in Doctor Who. Or any other type of flirting for that matter. Doctor Who can do more interesting things than this.
