    Liz is one of my favourite companions. Sad to see her go.And let’s not forget her husband Geoffrey Beevers. He was a UNIT soldier in Ambassadors of Death. He will return in the 80s.

    Since Liz didn't get a proper farewell episode, at least The Doctor did actually say 'goodbye' to her in this one.

    So many high points: “free will is not an illusion after all”, “That’s the sound of a planet crying out its rage”…. The Stahlmann/Doctor interactions, the drill constantly going, the whole alternate world scenario and its terrible denouement. Brilliantly directed (in spite of the issues), superbly written and acted. It’s great Absolutely 10/10

      I think Liz is a really good companion too, btw. Never really understood the need for a basic level companion. Even as a kid I can’t recall thinking the companion needs to be relatable. Don’t get that

    There is a nice reference to the destruction of the parallel world coming up in a couple of stories.
    I love how this episode ties the opening of episode 1 together. It begins with singing and whistling and everyone happy and it ends with Liz laughing. I think Liz is very underrated personally, and Caroline John's performance is very nice, especially when she's playing her alternate universe version.
    Also, imagine how this story would have been if they hadn't had the parallel world, which was the original script. It would have just been the Doctor stopping the drilling by the end of 4 episodes and you'd never see the consequences of failure. It wouldn't have been half as good.

    The singer Lulu was given the nickname by her manager, who thought her "a real lulu", to use a now rare slang term. The Oxford English Dictionary defines it as "a remarkable/wonderful person or thing", originally from late 19th century America.

    You had actually watched a quarter of the classic episodes by the end of the first episode of The Abominable Snowmen way back at the start of season 5. The halfway episode (No.348 will fall in a story in the 10th season).

    Superb story. I think that it does have impact because even though the counterparts die in their universe the ones we know in our universe could also end up the same way should the Doctor fail in his mission. I like Liz Shaw. Caroline John was a great actress and it’s sad she only got one series. My question to you two is which story from season 7 is your favourite?

    Season 7 of Classic is a unique Season feel-wise:more adult,less humourous than Troughton Era sometimes had become and an assistant/companion who was less of a screamer and nearer the doctor in intelligence 🎩

      @@TheShallowProclamation It got more of an The Avengers vibe with Pertwee stylishly dressed like Steed, and Liz filling the role of Emma Peel to some extent. Zoe was a bit Cathy Gale too when she took on The Karkus.

  • @billthewhovian
    @billthewhovian Před měsícem +1

    I like Liz I think it's a shame that she left. I understand why she was written out as the audience needs that person to ask things like "What's that Doctor?" or "Why does that happen Doctor?" etc and Liz tended to know the answers to such questions and the Doctor and Liz would discuss things. I won't mention her replacement yet.
    Also, yes, the number 2 output pipe blowing isn't great nor is an out of control leak!
    Right, now my season 7 question is for both of you but mainly Thomas as he is new to Classic Who, but Paul feel free to answer this as well. Ok, here goes, how do you like this new stuck on earth format? Now that the Doctor can't leave 20th century earth due to our Timelord friends?

    I presume CJ being pregnant and the wish to get rid of Liz anyway was why she gets no proper farewell.Shame CJ is dead as she could've bern bought back to elaborate on her characters departure,like Janet Fielding and Sophie Aldred did🎩

  • @johng5859
    @johng5859 Před měsícem +1

    This episode always feels a bit anti-climactic to me, as the previous instalment was so dramatic and harrowing this one always pales a bit by comparison. It doesn't help that I find the Greg and Petra from "our" universe less likeable than their alternative counterparts, and this episode is also a reminder that at heart, despite the excitement of the parallel universe subplot, Inferno is essentially a story about trying to stop a drill, which is not inherently thrilling. Even so, it deserves classic status and the final scene is lovely, showing how much the third Doctor has bonded with both Liz and even the Brig over the season.
    I think it is a shame Liz was dropped at this point, as I feel she had a lot more to give. Caroline John probably couldn't have returned anyway because of her pregnancy, but she was upset about being dropped and worried it was a reflection on her acting ability. Barry Letts (and Pertwee too, by all accounts) simply thought Liz was too intelligent and capable to be an effective companion, a stance that is understandable but in my view wrong. In any case, I think Caroline should have been given the courtesy of a proper farewell scene, as it seems a bit insulting for Liz just to disappear in the way she does. Letts would later justify it by saying Liz hadn't been in the show long enough for viewers to care about her leaving, but that justification in and of itself feels insulting to the actress.

    The whole parallel universe stuff just leaves me cold, mainly because I'm not invested in Not-Brigadier, Not-Liz etc - because they are such different people to those we know, and have come to love over the season.
    If the people in the parallel universe were the same as our planet, then leaving them to their fate would be much more horrific.
    I don't think you needed different people, just a different world to tell this story.

    After everyone forgives the previous ep its exceptional horror level because the cliffhanger seems so good, it turns out to have no resolution at all, the worst possible copout. We see that the Doctor has made it back, so just oh he made it, with no resolution of any doubt to it, nothing to establish why he made it. We don't see anything more of the parallel world, we know that means the worst happened, and that means the cliffhanger was wrong to give us any hope for them. The only thing resolved from the rolling lava scene was that the Doctor got away from it, and that just arbitrary with no resolving of why. Turns out to be a terrible misleading cliffhanger and copout and completely not one to attach greatness to after all.

    • @AndyRossism
      @AndyRossism Před měsícem +1

      Obviously you'll know this isn't a widely held general take on the story, but I think it's cool that Doctor Who is old enough , and the fans varied enough, to sometimes completely disagree, respectfully , which I do with you on this, ...But I do know how it feels to argue in the minority for a bit of Who....
      I like Love and Monsters! For real, sincerely ! The hate it gets makes me sad 😅
