Stress & Nutrition | PBNOW
Dr. Andrew Freeman MD, FACC, FACP speaks about Stress and Nutrition.
Both are pillars in the rapidly growing discipline of Lifestyle Medicine.
First Dr. Freeman will present a speech he recently gave at ACC 24, the American College of Cardiology's Annual International Conference.
What is the link and how can we improve them both?
In this talk, we will look at the squishier side of human life and see how stress and lifestyle can improve cardiovascular outcomes.
Our second half is an abbreviated version of Dr Freeman's annual review of recent Plant Based Nutritional research. In this, we will review some of the latest evidence of the effects of plant based nutrition on health and well being.
Dr. Freeman practices cardiology in Denver, Colorado, where he combines both traditional Western medicine with a holistic approach for overall wellness and disease prevention.
His Western medicine approach includes advanced cardiology diagnostics and his holistic approach adds lifestyle medicine; integrating diet, exercise, mindfulness and support.
He has been nicknamed “The Vegan Cardiologist”.

    57 years old here..Carnivore is the only way to go. Wait till your older and you start getting diabetes. Use to be plant based, now I'm not!! Got rid of my diabetes, glaucoma, arthritis in my hands. 208, now 165... Never ever again. Take in those oxalates, pesticides, and ruin the top soil and all the animals killed in the process. I wonder if all of you Doctors are vaccinated??? I'm here to break it to you. Not to many people trust Doctors anymore. Maybe to fix a broken leg.

    The only thing that bothers me about affordable plant based diet is the direction of commercial agriculture to adopt pesticides and GM CROPS to gain higher levels of profit with less regard of public health. God help us all if the food supply is in the control of profit hungry corporations.

    I'm figuring out my diet regimen so I must be doing something right bcuz tube sent me here. So far I'm on HALO FoDMAP Healthy American Local Organic And low Fodmap, an acronym for foods that ferment in the colon too quickly and can cause cancer. I just gave up avocado so a bit depressed.

    My gut cannot handle a plant based deit. Cannot handle any kind of fruit, whole grains, seeds or plant based milks. Cannot handle most vegetables or legumes. But it's okay with meats and eggs so I've stuck with these for my protein along with organic root foods and decided to go completely organic as I feel I have no other option.

    I like the video explaining how to restore the blood flow - and the new knowledge of the importance of chewing green leafy vegetables to restore the bone marrow to make the endothelial cells to make nitric oxide - the list with the top six was: kale, Swiss chard, spinach, arugula, beet greens,, beets - but a little bit later he mentioned the full list so fast that I could not understand what he said … but I heard book Choi, Swiss chard , kale, collard, mustard green,cilantro, parsley, asparagus ( green asparagus?) ….. or something like that 🙃🍀💚

    I'm on a weight loss journey. I'm 60 and currently weigh 214 pounds. My highest was 268. My goal is 150. I've been eating 2 plant based protein bars and 1 meal replacement shake a day, about 600 calories. Lots of water. But I'm so bloated and have terrible gas and constipation. Can you give me suggestions.??? The bars and shake are pea and rice protein. No Cow bars, and Garden Of Life Organic plant meal replacement powder.

      Lots of water, good stomach enzymes like Source Naturals, maybe add some fresh vegetables and such. Protein bars are still processed. Just some ideas…..🙏calories sound very low. Be careful long term. I’m not giving medical advice…

      Eat some salads, with sprouts, greens, peppers, tomatoes, celery, carrots, broccoli, cabbage...all really low calories but so good for rebuilding your body and getting rid of the constipation due to poor microbiome. There are loads of good dressing recipes that are super low calorie on Jane and Anne Esselstyns you tube channel.

      Real food is better than bars. Why you are relying them for your main food? Also, 600 calories is far too low. Your body will go into starvation mode.

    I was 53 and swam 20 lengths of an Olympic sized pool five days per week. I was fit. Then I developed Angina. I've managed the angina for 31 years by diet. I have no trust in pharmacy meds. So for two years, I hardly moved. Just crossing a street a little fast and my chest pain returned. I first found Hawthorn Herb, and that worked. Then I found Olive Leaf extract capsules and I spent $800 on them until I discovered how to dry the olive-leaves from a tree. 17 Years later I then went into intensive care with a Stroke. My Stroke was from eating 4-avocado daily. NO OIL is now part of my new healthy vegan diet. I'm fit, healthy, and in a few weeks it is my 80th Birthday.

    I read dr esselstyn's book 10 years ago. I had hbp but a heart cath showed clean arteries. Actually i had eaten the esselstyn diet pretty much for years but i consumed yogurt and milk kefir and nuts. After reading his book... I dropped dairy...ate more oats...but continued a handful of nuts and seeds for my " healthy" fats. After all dr esselstyn said that the reason he didn't let his patients eat nuts was because they would eat them all day. I knew i would not do that...and i didn't. I ate my handful once a day only. For 40 years i had not eaten animal products except for very occassionally fish. I had never eaten oil or salt. I had always eaten huge salads with vinegar with homemade wholegrain bread.... and i continued. I had not eaten any sweets since my 30s i never ate sugar. My tc was 148 never higher. My ldl was 70. After 10 years on that handful of nuts and occasional avocado i have developed cad...i have also developed systemic atherosclerosis... and calcified aorta...which drove up systolic bp even more.. i have had to double my bp meds. I developed afib and have to take an anticoagulant ( fuhrman says nuts protect against afib...but boy was that dude wrong). For the last 2 years...with strict esselstyn diet...no nuts or seeds or avocados or soy...i have regressed a tiny bit of valve disfunction...my tc is 115...but my ldl is 80 or 70. Now i will add a statin to the esselstyn diet. My advice...don't eat nuts and seeds...be wary of avocado...dont eat soy bec of its fat...get ldl to 50 no matter what you have to do.

      The average centenarian has a LDL cholesterol level of about 110 mg/dL which means in middle life it was a little bit higher.

There are so many confounding factors in considering what that factoid actually means in the scheme of all that encompasses a person's genetic ability to survive that long. If you encouraged...and succeeded...in convincing people to have ldls above 100...most would not see 60.

      @@betzib8021 It is relevant. In a 2010 study on Korean centenarians the average LDL was about 110 mg/dL, the lowest was 90 and the highest about 140 mg/dL. The confounding factors were that none were obese or heavy smokers, or ate junk food and none had low LDL under 90 and none had high levels over 140 and the men took in an average of 269 mg of cholesterol each day from whole intact foods and all of them had almost no access to a lifetime of synthetic vitamins or supplements. Stop getting your information from reading debunked books by people with zero credentials in Cardiology or nutritional biochemistry.

      @@Jeffs60 jeff...all that shows is that they had strong protective genetic mechanisms working for them. For instance they could have powerful hdl molecules with just the right protein structures on their apo stems so that ldl that tried to enter the sub endothelium was effluxed back into the bloodstream by their strong hdl...therefore creating high blood ldl that...instead of being able to enter smooth muscle cells under endothelial cells and attract macrophages which become foam cells.....their ldl was instead carried in the blood to protect brains and muscles...becoming an asset rather than the liability it is for most people. You see most people have loose junctions between their endothelial cells and faulty hdl so high ldl causes problems bec it goes where it isn't supposed to. Also...some people's endothelial cells make super high NO levels that coat their vessels in biological Teflon and nothing hurts THEIR arteries.vNow if you want to try for longevity by ramping up your ldl...go for it. You'll be n of one in your own cohort. I don't know how old you are...but if you are young it will take many years...until you have some kind of problem or imaging that shows you lost the bet....or...if your genetic systems are highest quality...you might find you got away with it. Then kudos. If you got the money for the meat...you can conduct your experiment as long as you need to...I can only assure you that...if you aren't hit by a truck or something...you will eventually find out how it all went. Meanwhile...while you are experimenting...I suggest a wee touch more education on pubmed.org or scihub...or nih...but ...hey...nothing like the personal experience. Nice talking with ya.

    I have been wfpb no oil no sugar no salt for 9 years. I did eat nuts and seeds and some avocado and soy. My hbp has progressed during that time to the point that i have doubled bp meds to control it.. arterial plaque and systemic plaque has grown and aortic arch has calcified. My tc was 148 or lower during that time and ldl has been a steady 70...yet plaque increased to the point that i now have systemic atherosclerosis. Stripping all fat...no seeds soy or avocado gave me better blood flow and now i will take a statin to lower ldl. I have realized that there are no healthy fats. They all slowly add plaque to the endothelium. Nathan Pritikin had it figured out. I should have listened. All my overt fats now come from oats. You cant tell whether or not this is happening to you by how you feel.

    I want to see a randomized control trial of an organic Whole Foods plant-based diet versus an organic Whole Foods animal based diet(carnivore/ketovore/Saladino). The recent 'twin study' and documentary was designed to produce a pro vegan result and they conveniently forgot to do the dexa scans looking at muscle mass, etc and then said 'oh it was too expensive to do that' when they had the funding of millions of dollars from Impossible Foods( study funding is another red flag)

    Why do all vegans need to take supplements and look sickly with pale looking skin? You are what you eat, right? You may be able to survive on a plant based diet, but it doesn't seem like people really thrive eating just plants. I know when I limit my diet to just plants, I start having various health issues again. Especially autoimmune, gut, and respiratory issues. When I tried the carnivore diet, all those issues disappeared. Maybe I'm just not meant to be a plant eater. 😕

      Oxalate only hurts if one already has a weakness in the kidney. Dr. Brooke Goldner REVERSED her end stage kidney failure eating only cruciferous veg, a little fruit and other veg, vegan-sourced omega-3. She was dying at age 16 of lupus caused kidney disease and other stuff.

    Eating a bunch of vegetables is surely a lot better than eating ice cream cakes and Reese's pieces. Keeping the glucose and insulin down is definitely a big part of the puzzle. What wild mammals experienced clogged arteries from eating other mammals and other mammals eggs? Do Serengeti Lions and Alaskan grizzlies have heart attacks from clogged arteries? How about bald eagles?

    Oxalates, phytates, lechtins...no vit B12... why would I want to eat anything else?

      My understanding is bacteria in the gut makes Vit B12 in animals and humans, lack of this bacteria could cause deficiency. As for oxylates, etc I am still figuring out, maybe by cooking, these molecules break apart.

      Yes, on a completely plant based diet, you will need to supplement B12. Beyond that: Research shows that people eating whole foods plant based are healthier. Apparently that list is not as important as you think. What you should worry about is all the saturated fats and cholesterol you're consuming with every bite of animal based food. You're also missing out on phytonutrients and fiber, if you're eating like every body else.

    Dr Esselstyn is the father of reversing coronary disease. He is a role model for physicians and was hugely influential in my decision to leave mainstream medicine and follow my heart to start Plant Docs to help others discover how plant-based nutrition can help prevent and reverse heart disease.       @@Just_forfun9140 Esselstyn never reversed anything in any human else he would have awards, honors or a Nobel Prize. He also was never a Cardiologist. He has a book accredited by nothing and in that book the artery image is from his colleague Dr. Joe Crowe a general surgeon who at age 44 had a heart attack even though he was slim, a non smoker, not a diabetic, no high blood pressure and had low total cholesterol of 156 mg/dL. So Esselstyn debunked himself because Crowe had all the metrics for preventing heart disease but could not explain why it happened. He changed the Crowe diet to less animal foods but if animal foods caused the problem why did they not raise his cholesterol level high like Esselstyn says they will. Ask Esselstyn why the TV show my 600 pound life has people in their 40's and 50's over 600 pounds that can barely move but no heart attack yet. Why didn't they get a heart attack and have their organs shut down when they were only 475 pounds?

    It was awesome when I became vegan 7 years ago. Not eating anything coming from animal sources made a difference in my health. Last month, I upped the ante and started plant-based eating. I feel better than ever before. Someone asked me today whether I don't have the temptation to eat meat sometimes. I replied, NEVER, on the contrary, I only have the temptation to not eat meat.

    "High-Fat, Low-Carb Diet May Lower Repeat Heart Attack Risk in Indian Patients, Research Suggests" In a breakthrough for heart disease prevention in India, recent studies suggest that a diet high in healthy fats and low in carbohydrates could help prevent repeat heart attacks and strokes in patients with established cardiovascular disease. A 2023 study published in the Indian Journal of Medical Research followed 200 Indian patients who had previously suffered a heart attack or undergone coronary artery bypass surgery.[1] Participants were randomly assigned to either a low-carb, high-fat diet rich in nuts, seeds, vegetable oils, and lean meats, or a standard low-fat diet. After two years, the low-carb group had a significantly lower rate of recurrent cardiovascular events compared to the low-fat group (3% vs. 12%). They also showed greater improvements in body weight, blood sugar control, and HDL cholesterol levels. These findings build on earlier research, such as a 2019 study of 150 heart attack survivors in northern India.[2] Those following a low-carb, high-fat diet emphasizing healthy plant and animal foods had a 70% lower risk of repeat heart attacks over 3 years compared to those on a conventional low-fat diet. "For Indian patients with a history of heart disease, these studies suggest that increasing intake of healthy fats while reducing refined carbohydrates could be a powerful tool for preventing future cardiovascular events," says Dr. Amita Gupta, cardiologist at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences in New Delhi.[3] However, experts caution that dietary recommendations should be tailored to individual needs and risk factors. "While these results are promising, it's important for patients to work closely with their doctors to develop personalized eating plans that align with their unique health profiles and cultural preferences," notes Dr. Gupta. As rates of heart disease continue to rise in India, these findings offer hope for new nutritional strategies to improve outcomes and quality of life for those already affected by cardiovascular conditions.
