Jonathan Stout - "When You Wish Upon a Star" - AEA R84A Active Ribbon Mic - 1932 Gibson L-5
I’m at the @fretboardsummit this weekend in Chicago, but in the meantime, here’s a bit of “When You Wish Upon a Star”. I was playing the tune on a gig with a band last week, and happened to find myself almost catching the melody while I was soloing; so, I thought I should actually learn the darn thing as a chord melody arrangement.
I’m playing my 1932 Gibson L-5, with Martin SP 80/20 Strings, and a @bluechippicks TD40, all captured by my @ribbonmics R84A active ribbon mic.
There's no additional EQ, save for a HPF at 100hz, and only some vintage-style compression and touch of extra room sound added.
This style of Chord-melody playing and soloing is my own version of the playing of Allan Reuss, who played with Benny Goodman from 1935-1938 before going onto play with many of the best big bands and combos of the 30's and 40's, before settling into studio work in the late 40's. While there's scant resources for this style of playing, the THIRD volume of my DC-Music School Course is one of best places to start. It contains transcriptions of my improvisations in the Reuss-style over standard tunes, using all of the classic Reuss vocabulary and techniques.
Get it, and the other 2 volumes (mostly CC-style single note playing) at DC-Musicschool.com

I'm continuing to work on using our new AEA R84A Active Ribbon Mic, and I haven’t done as much recording of my 1939 Gibson L-5 with it. So I threw down a quick rhythm track using my 1932 L-5, and then jammed a bit over “Coquette”, playing an intro, chorded melody and an improvised chord solo chorus, followed by some single note soloing. The 1939 is way brighter, so it really cuts through a band...

I'm continuing to work on using our new AEA R84A Active Ribbon Mic, and I jammed a quick 3 chorus version of "My Blue Heaven" while my family was out of the house. I used the intro from the classic 1940 Artie Shaw and his Gramercy Five recording (an arrangement my Campus Five plays regularly), and quickly dashed out a rhythm guitar track to blow over. Both the rhythm and lead tracks were captur...

I was prepping for our annual Charlie Christian Birthday Concert (live stream available here: czcams.com/video/kV35k453CLE/video.html ) so I recorded myself jamming over two choruses of the "Sheik of Araby" in the style of Charlie Christian, who recorded the tune with the Benny Goodman Sextet in 1939, and was recorded playing it live with the band on the radio a couple times. I'm playing my 193...

I only got a few minutes on Charlie Christian's birthday to knock a "Happy Birthday" video in his honor, so I jammed on two choruses of "Honeysuckle Rose" in Db, which is where he played it with both the BG Sextet and recorded it with the full Benny Goodman Orchestra in 1939. I'm playing my 1937 Gibson ES-150 and 1939 EH-185 amplifier, while the rhythm track was recorded using my 1939 Gibson L-...

REPOSTED from Instagram: @campusfive “I’m Crazy ‘Bout My Baby” written by Fats Waller and Alex Hill. For tunes where I don’t have much a variation to offer on each “A section”, I figure the last 8 of the melody serves as a solid enough introduction to a chorus-length chord solo, in the style of the undersung Allan Reuss. Awesome! Can you tell more about this three-note voicing(F, Gb, Eb) over Eb tonic chord in the main theme? Sounds spicy!

    • @campusfive
      @campusfive Před 2 dny

      I first found it used in a George Van Eps solo on "Cherry" from a Jess Stacy recording from 1950, and I've taken to calling it the "skronch" chord. Allan Reuss also played it in an unissued blues from the Peck's Bad Boys session as well. It's basically just a really "crunchy" way to play the tonic note over the tonic chord. So it's just a funky "Eb" voicing. "Spicy" is another good way to put it.

As a person who has had only moderate success with playing standards chord melody style Using the Fingerstyle approach, it is fascinating to see it executed with a pick. And it really makes sense to use a pick , because you can get so much more precision and swing into the sound. I am a special interested in your third volume video lesson from DC music.
