- On my way out the door this morning, I felt a little inspired, so I grabbed my guitar and played for about ten minutes. I really have occasion play more than one chorus in a chord melody style but I really felt like stretching out. After warming up for a couple minutes, I recorded this quick and dirty in one take, playing some rhythm guitar backing tracks I made years ago.
Also, I was honored to be a guest on the The Fretboard Journal podcast with Jason Verlinde so check out episode 420.
I've been playing guitar for decades and decades, but this leaves me breathless. The man is on the level of Allan Reuss and George van Eps - the best of the best of American swing guitars.
Cheers, and thanks so much
God of the gods of the guitar
Great chops and that guitar is heaven! Thank you for sharing both!
Man, you've become one of my favorite guitarists. I hope our paths cross one of these days.
Simply outstanding!
Fantastic. I probably liked this months ago, but I'm rediscovering it. I must learn this. I want to write a swing song. The whole chord-melody concept is so appealing. Great look, too.
Amazing. Jon, I have amassed a pretty extensive knowledge of recorded chord melody in this style, from the wonderful Dick McDonough, to the ineffable Van Eps, to our mutual hero Alan Reuss, and sideways to the Harlem School of Al Casey, John Trueheart and Bunky Addison, without forgetting Bucky. As I said already - but this video is conclusive evidence - you have grown to be one of the all-time greatest in the style. Swing on!
Wow, thanks so much! Cheers
Wow! You always knock me out especially when you play in Allan Reuss' style. In fact I owe you a debt of gratitude for introducing me to Mr. Reuss' playing. I have a copy of your "I Got Rhythm" chord melody as well as a few of your other transcriptions which are superb. I also purchased your course from the DC music school (highly recommended) so I know that you are interested in education as well. in the third part of the course you touch on this style of chord melody playing a bit but I wanted to ask if you could possibly develop a course or a book on the Allan Reuss style? From my research on the internet it seems that he published a guitar folio but I have not been able to obtain a copy and it seems that you are the only person who could take on a project of this type. I am sure that you are very busy with lots of things but a resource of this type would be invaluable and would help to preserve the legacy of this unique and wonderful style of playing.
Bloody breathtaking man. Hats off.
Thanks!
absolutely splendid!
Absolute master of the fretboard!! I love that Gibson, mellow tone.
Bravo !!...Bravo !!...What a Joy to hear you playing one of my favorite old time songs..."Indiana" Man you can really play and how I love that Old Songbook ,,,Sweet Lorraine...Stella...Laura...etc...

This Hoosier thanks you 👌
Incredible! Love it :) It'd be great to get a walk-through of your techniques
You can check out some transcriptions of mine in the soundslice.com store, and there's several transcriptions of Reuss-style chord-melody playing on volume 3 of my course at dc-musicschool.com
Ah super!

This is so amazing!
Thanks so much!
It really doesn't get better than this, thank you for keeping swing guitar alive, it's such an underrated style!
Cheers!
Doesn't get any better than this
I hope someday to be as cool as Joe Pass or Mr.Stout!!
What Joe Pass does is so much more complicated. One of the things about the Reuss-style is that it's actually less complicated than one would think, harmonically.
Holy crap.
🔥🔥🔥
Yeah! The real deal 😀
WOW 😂 we sure know where you have been during the lockdown
Mind blowing! I love this style, and I was wondering where you can find some material to learn it. Very inspirirng to say the least! 🙂
There's almost nothing out there, but I do have a couple transcriptions in the soundslice.com store, and there's several transcriptions of chord-melody playing on volume 3 of my course at dc-musicschool.com

Gulp!
Superb.
Thanks a lot!
Swingin’!
Did you end up getting that L-5 from Norms? If so please make another video with that guitar
I did not, but I wish. Thankfully, I do already have an extraordinary blonde 17" L-5 from 1939 I love. I did however, get this 1932 L-5 from Norm's.
So was it Alan Reuss on those Jess Stacy recordings playing the guitar?
I think the sessions you're thinking of were with George Van Eps, who was Allan's teacher.
@@campusfive Oh interesting! That would make sense then that the style of playing is similar.
hey what methods do you use to record and could you possibly break it down in a video
:)
I just recording a rhythm backing track using a Blue Yeti mic into Garageband, with no particular processing. From there I just played along with my computer speakers and captured that with a Shure MV88 iphone mic and my iphone. Just clipped the end and beginning off with the native ios video app.
I’ll have want he’s having.🥰
you play almost as good as i want to be.lol😅
