waaaaaw❤😊
i used this for 1084 blades. it didnt darken it too much but as i left it longer than 10 mins it started to eat a bit into the metal. the 1084 was a bit uneven and motley after ht that wouldnt sand out too well. as a result after the acid wash the blade almost looked like a damascus with a patchy uneven appearance that wasnt too bad. after stonewash there wasnt a lot of wash feature but enough to get the idea of what had been done. blade could have been darker and wash feature could have been more pronounced. i think it was an inherent problem with the 1084 bar stock more than anything else.
This is an updated version of this video - czcams.com/video/m6oKy2UDeLI/video.html All the blades I've stone washed have been 1084; I've found that the heat treatment needs to be very even for good results as well. Cheers! Good luck with your projects!
@@RedBeardOps yes i think the ht company has lost its touch and i will be changing them. i normally use only 440c and bring up to mirror so just started in 1084. did another ht 1084 yesterday and you could see when it was in the acid that a portion of the blade wasnt turning to the black and then wouldnt accept the stone wash finish. before i tried the stone washing and was sanding back thru the grits as with a 440c process i normally use the 1084 would show a mottled uneven patchy finish. thats why im trying a stone wash process to eliminate that patchy finish. like it had been burnt in patches. anything past about 600 grit was hiliting the uneven finish so id have to leave it at a satin which is harder to do than a mirror! could be the 1084 itself but im thinking more the heat treater. cheers
This was a phenomenal video. I've purchased few pre-ground blades and made the handles and sheaths, but you've given me the confidence to finally try a blade.
Glad I could help! Good luck with your builds!
chainmail lol they're not dangerous at all if you use them properly and treat them with respect
Higher probability of accident than most other tools I'd say. Based on the data! Cheers!

lol
Well explained 👍
Glad it was helpful!
Was just wondering how I was going to solve any warps from first time quenching, and came across this vid linked on homemadetools. Just after having looked at a woodworking vice and wondering how to go about straightening a blade with it! Could not be better timing.
Some great ideas, and made me realise I need something that can be removed from the vice, so I can straighten the metal/blank before beveling, and a 3 pillar system I've seen others use to bend a beveled blade after quenching. Awesome vid as usual!
If you're going to be using a 3 point bending jig, just make sure you do your bending after the first tempering cycle. Otherwise you'll snap your blade.
@@RedBeardOps Thanks so much for the tip!
Very nicely done. Thanks for sharing
Thank you! Cheers!
awesome video mate. heat treated my first 1084 knife (made using your other videos) and about to temper! Cheers mate
Nice! Good luck with the rest of your build!
Great video thanks, you don't need expensive gear to make a great knife as you've shown. I still make a few myself with very little but yeah, love your work.
Glad you liked it! Cheers!
You should offer in person courses with like 3 people at a time I’d love to learn more about knife making and start making them for family and friends also, your work is very quality 👍🏼
Thanks for the comment! maybe one day!
I built a 2x72 for $35 for my second knife. Treadmill and skate board wheels. I later did spend 40 bucks on a proper set or wheels. It is different from every one else online.. It has Jack shart and the motor is geared down 2-1. 7200 motor cut in half about a 4 in drive for the sander belt it runs about 3,600fps like most real belt grinders. It has profiled a lot of blades in those 7 to 8 years ago. Even have a 10 in profile wheel made from a rubber wheel tire 2 in wide. I made a walnut pipe today I turned on the lathe but I used that grinder on it. I use it to sharpen my hss turning tools too. Very seldom a day goes by it is not on. It has ran as much as 4 hrs straight more times than I can count. People can take little and make something nice. You just need a little know how. When you see a 2 x 72 up close there is nothing to them. Any one here with very limited welding skills and a $100 stick welder or a $120 wire feed flux core welder can make one. Nice build and good way to show you can do it on the cheap. I use to heat treat and forged in my smoker. Get a hot fire and I welded a pipe with some slits in it under the fire box and use a old leaf blower to get the stell up to forge weld temp no problem. Then I still use the gas grill to temper to this day. I just watched to much damn forged in fire season 1 and I had to try. I seen that dude use a cast iron skillet as a forge more or less. I was like damn man anyone can do this. I need to get back to it
Very cool!
You have to love the vise in a vise. Lol I get you was trying to make a point of you sing the cheap tools but that was funny
LOL, I know right?!
Those PAPR's are comfortable. My company is soon launching MicroClimate Air3, should be more accessible to the hobbyist. The design uses a monocoque manifold design, it should end up 1/2 the price of 3M. Can we share one with you to compare when we get certification?
Feel free to send me a picture once you have them

What is the style of the knife in the video?
Small EDC Droppoint?
i'd like to point out that if you have a granite slab or pane of glass to use as a reference flat, you can glue or tape your sand paper down at the edge to sharpen your knife, works great for chisels and plane irons too
Good point!
Thanks for detailed video! Quick question to you. How do you clean filters, by the way?
Every once and a while I'll take em out and use the shop vac. This extends the life. At some point you'll have to buy a new one.

Another excellent video! I sourced my granite “surface plate” from a local memorial shop that makes gravestone markers. They had many nice size “falloff” pieces that they were happy to sell me. Mine is 12” x 18” x 1” and I was charged $20 😊

I just found this beautiful rebuild of a lathe I've had since 1996. It was my father-in-laws, and his father and bought prior to WW II. I have almost all the original equipment that came with it including the extra set of gears and the woodworking plate. I need a larger chuck as mine is only 6 inches across the face. I agree with one of the prior comments that this is newer than 1937 as mine was purchased in 1938 and that is the date on the original users manual. The motor mount is of models in the late 40's or early 50's, if not later. Also the original color was a battleship gray. Whoever did the prior rehap, painted it the blue and the Craftsman plate was red with black raised letters. I also agree with a prior comment to use the direction option built on the lathe so the direction won't unscrew the chuck off the main shaft or the jawed chuck off. Mine is still original from the 30's due to the care of my FIL and his dad. Being family owned and used has kept it in great shape and I'm learning more on it every time I use it. I just wish my FIL was still here to guide me along in learning more than what I have now as he was a master machinist. I retired from the Air Force in 1997 and we returned to Pittsburgh, PA in October. We lost my FIL in 2000.and I never had time to set it up correctly until recently for a project. I've watched a lot of CZcams videos to try and fill the gap and enjoyed your rebuild greatly. Thanks! MSgt David R. Smyth, USAF, Ret.
Very cool sir, thanks for the comment! There was some amazing old school engineering that went into these machines; It's a pleasure to use!
That's a beautiful blade you made and the handle is nuttin to sneeze at either brother, just found out about your channel and subscribed 🇺🇲😎🙏🗡️⚔️🔪🗡️
Thank you very much! Glad you enjoyed the build!
Great video!
Glad you enjoyed it! Cheers!
Good job brother. I use several harbor freight tools. Mostly grinding wheels, clamps etc.
Right on; cheers sir!
PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE! LOWER the Vertical Blade Guide closer to the work piece! RTFM for your band saw. 1/4" to 3/8" above the work piece. This prevents the blade from warping or breaking.
Good tips
I hope you didn't use Pittsburgh Tools. some of the best out there .They have never failed me. And they are less expensive than the name brands. Oh. You're just using the TOOLS, not forging files or wrenches.
Yep, geared towards beginners here.

James- you're too critical...but I do the same thing. You did a great job and anybody would be proud to have it on their belt! 11:39
Thank you sir! Much appreicated
A follow up question would be, could you pay for these harbor freight tools with the knives you make with them? This knife might not be up to some standards but is it still sellable? If so, how much?
Oh for sure you could! If you're just starting out not much, but as your kills and fit/finish improve you can fore sure recap the cost of tools.
It's irresponsible to be reviewing batteries simply on power output. Internal examination is necessary.
Sorry to disappoint!
Why not just put the spacers in the lathe to make sure they’re concentric to the hole and to also get a good finish? You probably could have made the cap and top spacer out of one part in the lathe too.
likely!
I am struggling to get the oven up to 1925. Any tips for better insulation? I recaulked all my interior joints with the same furnace cement used in the video, and that helped. FYI for anyone that had issues with the mortar, I found this stuff in the caulk tube worked much better, as far as holding the bricks together. I added a soft firebrick inside the oven in order to reduce the amount of space I needed to heat since my knives are all small. I also considered adding a layer of ko wool with satanite to the inside top of the furnace. I'm also considering adding satanite to the exterior ko wool. Any other suggestions to improve the insulation?
Man sorry to hear you're having issues. Mine gets up to 1925, but it does take a bit. May be worth verify your resistance on the coils and calculated watts
@@RedBeardOps that is definitely something I should do, thanks for the advice. I've been trying to get it up to temperature all day. I finally gave up turned everything off and cracked the door open. I just looked and apparently my thermometer is melting... The steel inside the ceramic coating is bending downward. Ever had anything like that happen before?
@@yzpaul42 dang... maybe it was up and over 1900 but the temp wasn't reading right?
@@RedBeardOpsthat's definitely what I'm thinking. I have a replacement thermometer on the way and I'm crossing my fingers.
Great guide J
