Dr Al Gabriel: The Northern Roe Stalker

We sit down with Dr Al Gabriel, a man of many talents. A molecular biologist with a background in ecology and genetics, a BASC Council member (Northumberland), a keen Roe stalker and a freelance writer for shooting magazines, whilst also on a mission to promote diversity in shooting and public understanding of country sports.
We discuss a whole range of topics from:
- Stalking Roe deer in Northumberland and it's challenges
- How Al got into deer stalking
- Deer Tick Awareness: The truths vs myths, how best to avoid Lyme's Disease, the secrets of tick deterrents

See enough muntjac and you'll see plenty of ticks; groin most commonly but also armpits. Always underneath. One thing which is true is that tick burden is not uniform across animals from the same piece of land.

Some people in the comments be like: poor animal suffered ,bad shot, if u don’t know how to shoot, then don’t hunt, Bruhhh, what could possibly be a better shot?? This big of a animal didn’t go 20 meters, whatss more ethicallll
first you tried to shoot really good buck before the rot and then you shot a young, perspective buck in velvet. Comon, this is nonsense
Did you not actually listen to what was said in the video?? I clearly explained my reasoning for taking this buck and who are you to judge us on our own deer management plan for this particular ground?! 😂 We produce very strong bucks year on year…

Not a very good backstop an the buck you shot there buddy. Village to the right and a road behind the hedge😢
There absolutely was a perfectly good backstop where the buck had eventually stopped. Unfortunately, the camera doesn’t show the angle of shot well, but if you look again you can see we are a lot higher than the buck so shooting down at him with ground behind him and thankfully no village to the right.

Mein Gott how can you shoot a buck like that?!!....No I´m just kiddin, Waidmannsheil, it´s always a pleasure to see you stalking in that beautiful rolling hills. And it is really amazing to see what kind of bucks grow in your neighborhood - as a connoisseur for german hunting, you know you have to stalk al lot to find bucks like that in my neighborhood. Deer stalking - sitting in a box with a thermal spotter 🥴 Necessary for deer management, but it isn’t stalking.
Did you actually watch the video? Was actually sat there with a pair of rangefinder binos, listening to the last of the dusk chorus all around us. 🐦⬛ With all the stalking we do, it’s nice to actually take some time to sit and watch - there is much to learn from that too. 👍🏼🦌
