Fabrication YOU Can Be PROUD Of!
zhlédnutí 95KPřed 4 měsíci
I've been asked where I went to school to learn fabrication. No schooling for me! I do have a lot of pride, a fair amount of patience, and a little bit of OCD though. This video will show you the simple things I do to make my work stand out a little, and appear more "high quality" than some.
Setting Pinion Angle! Mighty Max Ep. 23

I've been waiting for this moment for a long time; To finally figure out what my pinion angle will be! Today we build a crossmember to mount the transmission to the frame. Not just any crossmember though. It has to be removable to allow future maintenance of the transmission, rear main seal, exhaust, etc.

Many fabrication tools like tubing benders an shrinker/stretcher machines must be mounted to a stand. These stands take up a lot of valuable floor space! Why not just call it a track bar like 99.9% of the rest of the world?

    • @GarageFab
      @GarageFab Před 5 hodinami

      Question: Are you assuming “99.9%” simply because it’s the term you use? Prior to this comment and a brief search, I had never heard the term track bar. Also During that search I found that the term track bar is often used interchangeably between both traction bars (ladder bars) or a lateral support bar. A panhard bar can only refer to a lateral support bar, so I will continue to use that term along with 99.9% of the rest of the world.

    The only inaccuracy I saw was when you said that the full size link bar and the model link bar are the same. The full size link bar had revolute joints in it. That means that they only have 1° of freedom which is rotation. That’s it. The model link bar had spherical joints at each end, which means each one of them has 3° of freedom (rotation about X, Y and Z) The full-size link bar can create a planer mechanism whereas the model link bar will inevitably take your mechanism into a spatial realm. This means that your axle will eventually be able to move side to side and not just up and down.

    Ok so.. I’m a high pressure tank and heat exchanger fabricator. I’ll tell you what, only time I’ll really use downhill dual shield, 1/16 wire is what we use fyi. But anyways I’ll use a slight vertical downhill when I’m on the inside of a tank welding the round seems on the heads. Key word”slight” witch means I start slightly uphill and go downhill a tad right into the “flat” and then actually when I’m coming to meet up to that last weld, I start going uphill very ever so slightly at the very end of the weld. Everything gets air arced on the outside. Then a single stringer is run. Before that I was a structural welder building water parks, and never would I use it there “downhill vertical”

    @anthonydito2974 Před 7 dny

    Newbie question…. I know stacking start and stop spot/tack welds is not acceptable for a variety of reasons (no penetration into base metal, potential for porosity, etc). Is it ever acceptable if you are starting and stopping like in the very first part of the video if you are also stacking patterns (whip and pause, triangles , c’s,etc ) but ensuring you are holding each pulse long enough to get penetration in the root and in each base material when welding thinner 3/16, 1/8, 14 gauge, 18 gauge steel? Thank you!

    • @GarageFab
      @GarageFab Před 7 dny

      Understand the following is a whole lot of opinion. I recommend asking folks that are far more knowledgeable than me. The problem with starting and stopping is it takes a moment for the materials to reach a temperature required for proper fusion, and each stop allows the weld to cool some. Though the superficial weld looks similar, the locations of proper fusion looks like a string of pearls. Here’s the thing! That’s only a concern (says me) in structural welding. Control arms, support beams, vehicle framework, etc. There’s a lot of situations where I think the start stop is perfectly fine. Art, furniture, gates, exhaust etc. If it’s not going to see extreme stress, it’s not just going to fall apart. Just know that the welder needs to be set higher than normal to penetrate as much as possible in short bursts. Metal thickness plays a large part in how acceptable the method it is. 3/16? Not the best choice, especially in structural as mentioned above. Sheet metal, however, not only welds great with the start stop method, it’s somewhat required. Sheet metal warps easily and you’ve got to try and keep it cool. Start stop is the best way to do that, and penetration is not usually a concern with sheet. Lemme know what you’re thinking.

    • @anthonydito2974
      @anthonydito2974 Před 5 dny

      First off. THANK YOU! I really appreciate you taking some time and thought to respond. This helps us newbies more than you know. I like your string of pearls analogy, that makes sense and will definitely be remembered! I had used the start stop method on areas of a 18 gauge floor pan replacement because I was worried about warping. It seems to definitely be acceptable with the thinner stuff, penetration is visible. When I used it for some thicker areas (thick to thin 1/8th to 3/16th ) I turned the heat up a little more and lowered the wire speed and held as long as possible without burning through. These are not load bearing/high stress areas and I fully understand that they probably didn’t achieve maximum fusion but I definitely tried to get as much penetration as possible. On some practice scrap the penetration was visible on the backside of the workpieces, not just discoloration but visible metal differences. Due to the location of the welds it was a “better” option for me as running a good bead was not possible/high potential for a big mess. Thank you again!

    • @GarageFab
      @GarageFab Před 11 dny

      Might sound dumb but it took me a long time to realize how important it was to be able to see clearly. More importantly how important a CLEAN helmet is! Just a few spatter marks, mild scratches, and or finger prints on the lens destroys visibility when the bright light hits it. Even if you think you can see clearly just before you start welding! I used to keep my protective lenses on for months. Now I buy them in bulk and replace them often. It doesn’t cost much. Make sure your vision isn’t too dark or your arc is too bright. Adjust the helmet if it is. If it’s not adjustable, YES, it’s time for a new helmet.

    I really appreciate the informative and educational content. Demonstrating the principles with models makes it easy for me to grasp the concept you are explaining. I have a newer 4Runner that I would like to lift 2.5" in front and 2.0" in the rear. Is it correct that because there are two u-joints on the rear drive shaft the lift will not cause a vibration at highway speed? And what about the front axle CV joints?
