Custom Front Crossmember for the Mighty Max Ep. 18

  • After the 2 inch front frame Z, the motor needs be dropped back down, but not before removing and replacing the engine crossmember.
    This episode showcases an interesting method of retaining the factory Mighty Max suspension geometry by building a jig that holds the lower control arm bushings in place, even after the factory crossmember is removed.

    I'm a metal fabricator and the best advice I can give you is that tacks are a lot easier to cut than full welds. Tack it, try it, adjust it, repeat until it's good enough, then weld it. Also, remember to tack it somewhere you can cut it. Otherwise, your fab skills are on point! Great video!

    • @GarageFab
      @GarageFab  Před rokem

      Thank you, Eric! That’s really good advice. But I like to live on the edge. There’s nothing I like more than struggling to get a part off that’s been completely welded from top to bottom. Especially when I’m on my back and the sparks can land in my ear holes.

    I'm gonna take a moment to have a rant.
    So far I have watched ALL of your content and I look forward to much more.
    We have many of the same subscriptions, Make It Kustom, Fitzee's Fabrication, Finnegan's Garage among others.
    You guys do some amazing work and I am continually inspired to keep up with my own build.
    I spent a few years taking care of the boss' off-road toys in Phoenix, AZ and finally decided to build my own, which had been bouncing around in my brain for a few years.
    Here in Saudi Arabia, my build is a 1983 Nissan Patrol and it is the only one like it in the world.
    It was never sold in the US; EPA and DOT restrictions, I suspect.
    1995 LT1 from an Impala SS, TH400/NP205 and 1 ton axles. A D60 front and 14 bolt rear on link suspension with coil-overs.
    The only thing still Nissan is the body and frame but both are heavily modified.
    The goal here is to use it to explore the local desert terrain. The local's minds will be blown, though.
    It has been over 6 years in the making as I do it in my spare time but I do rent a small shop in the local area. For dirt cheap.
    My full time job is taking care of F-15 Eagles over here.
    I'm sure you see them on occasion flying overhead from Nellis.
    I've had an on/off, love/hate relationship with Eagles since 1986 and it is the ultimate hot rod.
    But, enough about me.
    I really enjoy your content and look forward to much more.
    There is enough grey in your beard to show that this isn't your first rodeo, you know what you are doing and I see that.
    I earned each and every one of my grey hairs as have you.
    Keep at it and Keep Moving Forward!
    All the best to you my friend!

    I did something similar with my crossmember but I made it in a 3 piece design so I can remove it. I'm building a 302 powered rwd ford focus and I'm fabricating the kit with preventative maintenance in mind and having it be removable will make it easier to pull the engine or just the oil pan if I needed. Hope you don't have to cut it up! Those mig welds are something I envy for sure!

    • @GarageFab
      @GarageFab  Před rokem

      You’re my type of fabricator, Jason! Most people don’t think about working on stuff in the future. (That includes production vehicle engineers!)
      I was just about to write that all work on this truck will be top side stuff, so I wasn’t worried about making a removable Crossmember. But then… I realized I had a lot of problems with engine bearings on the new motor, so removing the oil pan in the future is a very likely possibility. Hopefully I’m not hating life soon! I’ll report back to you. 😂

      @@GarageFab - My welds are no where close to how nice yours are but I’ve thought about getting some welding shots with my B camera (usually a go-pro). My thought was to set it up behind an extra auto-darkening helmet. The helmet would protect the camera from sparks and also give me something I could mount on an arm/tripod as a unit. Did you notice any ✈️ in the background? This episode was a bit of a social experiment. I live on a flight path, and I usually wait for for the planes to pass before recording. @@GarageFab Honestly I didn't notice. Two things in regards to sound. When you've got a mic on , they do a really good job of keeping your voice as the main sound. The other thing you can do is also adjust the db (that's not a typo) yes, the db to cut out external sound. Usually there is a range of -30 to 0 db. The closer you adjust to -30 you really nock out external noise but you also run the risk of recording your own voice at a very low volume. When set to zero you hear your voice really strong, but you also run the risk of a lot of external sound. Sometimes depending on your environment you may set it to -18 or -15, usually a safe setting is -9, or -6. And of course the maybe others who say differently. Either way it's easy to test and set it and come up with what you think is best based on your situation.
      The other thing is also production, and what your audience expects. First of all we love your content, we are a captive audience. Even if we did hear the airplane we don't' care. Your production quality is great and your message is always clear. So kudos to you and the great job you are doing. 👍

    • @GarageFab
      @GarageFab  Před rokem +1

      As always, Darrin, very much appreciated. I use the Rode Mic Go wireless lav system. There’s 3 settings of unknown db. We’ll call them low med and high. Medium is ideal. Assuming that’s zero. High is unusable. Accidentally used high in the video before last. Constant clipping produced terrible quality. I haven’t tried low and bump up volume in post. I’ll see what happens!
      I have been and will continue experimenting with lower quality production. Most videos are shot with the A7iii, LED studio lights, and the Lav. This video was 100% iPhone with the exception of the welding shots.
      Easier production would be much more sustainable. I might start doing some GoPro stuff too. 🤔

    It looks great. I would really love to see you finish out a triangulated 4 link video. I have watched your suspension series and am in the mock-up phase on my 49 GMC. If I understood correctly the links will need to be parallel and the same mounting distance apart. Since I chose not to cut the bed sides and went with the widest tire that would fit I am not able to have any side to side movement.

    • @GarageFab
      @GarageFab  Před rokem +1

      Must it be triangulated? Every time I deal with such tight tire clearances I chicken out and go with a parallel with a watts or panhard so I have the left to right adjustability of the axle. But yes it sounds like you understand perfectly. Keep in mind, I only recommend the top and bottom bars are parallel on bagged or juiced vehicles to ensure a constant pinion angle. Not needed for metal spring stuff!

      I got to be honest, I’m a pretty lazy dude. I really want to get this done so I can start on my own personal truck, so I think I’m just gonna go with the factory mounts on this one.

    Looks really stout, kinda surprised you didn't fab it out of 1/4 plate boxing where needed so you could drop your sides lower to the bushings to allow for more oil pan clearance. Essentially duplicating the factory original just beefier and boxed.

      Damnit, Brian! Not sure why I didn’t 🤦🏻‍♂️ It wouldn’t have been too much more work and yes, less problems!
      I must’ve just had 2 x 4 in my head, and couldn’t see past it even after discovering the clearance issues.
      Let me make up a good excuse real quick…
      I didn’t do that because the bushings for the lower control arms are angled, and trying to bend the plate to match those angles would have been too much of a challenge.
      Believable?

      @brianluck84 Před rokem +1

      @@GarageFab I actually didn't even notice the bushings were angled. Either way you can't go wrong with boxed tubing. It's probably going to be the strongest part of the frame at this point.

      Haha! No doubt. Part of the reason I went with the 1/4 inch is this crossmember is probably the most abused when dragging. I don’t drag much (and the Wife never does) but sometimes it’s unavoidable. 😂

    Why did you not put the bushes inside the X member? Like the original X member. You would have gained lots of room.

    • @GarageFab
      @GarageFab  Před rokem

      True. The factory bushings are angled though, so it would’ve been really challenging to form the crossmember so that the bushings would remain at the same angle.
      Not impossible, but far more work that I want at the moment.

    just a thought about underside gusset ... ?

    • @GarageFab
      @GarageFab  Před rokem +1

      Unsure what you mean. I don’t think this crossmember needs any gusseting, however, in the video after this, we created alignment cam bushing tabs that serve as very large gussets on both sides.

    Is the engine centered in the frame normally? I know the Silverado and my S10 weren't.

      I think you just answered your own question! If it’s been working good for you, no one can tell you it’s a bad setup!
      I’m unfamiliar with this suspension, so I can’t really tell you what its pros and cons are.

    If you were going to completely rebuild the front crossmember, then cutting the frame was totally unnecessary.

      Explain! There’s nothing I love more than doing less work. If I missed that opportunity I’ll be quite bummed.
