I work on 2stroke outboard motors that I save from ultimate death from no service, it is hard to find someone to work on these especially if corroded, I look for good used condition outboards with low to no corrosion and revive them giving full service and find out what is wrong with some that I have trouble with. I will be including some other things I will be working on, I have several more outboards to work on so more videos to come.
Mercury/Mariner 175HP 2Stroke V6 1979 Timing and Boat Test
I have a 1979 Mariner that I changed the throttle and shifter cables out due to excessive play. I retimed the Mariner 175hp outboard did my best to try and get it on video. Boat test video apologizes for the sound and video quality I’m working on upgrading equipment. I tried having my daughter record while driving the boat.

I have a 1985 Evinrude 20HP modified to 25hp low hours. Compression 141 cylinder 1 and 142 Cylinder 2. Boat test I had to remove the Thermostat cover and block head due to plastic pieces clogging the thermostat and i wanted to make sure no more plastic parts in tge water passages. Everything perfectly cleared out and running excellent.

I have a Great Running Evinrude 35HP SS on a Walker Bay Rib Inflatable 10Foot I have 2 batteries in the front as well as the gas tank because the boat is too light at 125lbs rated for a 15hp but solid aluminum transom best i have seen for small Ribs. This one feels fast I wish I had an accurate gps.

I had a Mercury 25hp pullstart rope break on me so i had to install a new rope and reset tge spring with the groove it likes to jump out of groove easily. But got her fixed and cleaned up.

I have a 2000 Yamaha 30hp 2stroke 3cylinder that had water in the gas. It has been flushed and fully serviced with all new carburator seals and needle x3 untrasonically cleaned, new fuel pump rebuild and new air mixture screws, fresh gear oil and i did a oil injection loop because the tank was leaking cracked. Where did you get the block off kit
I ordered it off ebay just a block off where the plastic or metal oil pump gear is with a seal but you have to disconnect the tanks and electronics for oil level sensors.

The old Gale Powerhead, first used by Evinrude and Johnson in 1971. 1960 - 70 E/J engines used a different Block, with a Recirculating Temp Controlled Cooling system

Also the white with a black tracer From the Idle module has to be disconnected from the outer switch box in order to time correctly, 40 yr Merc Certified Tech
I have a 96 mercury 200hp efi I have to check and possibly adjust timing. Do I need to disconnect this white/black wire from the outter switch box aswell??

@@matt98eclipse When ever the motor is turning over either running or with the starter ,water in a barrel or from the hose MUST be used To prevent Impeller damage or worse ,powerhead overheating
I got one of these and a 9.8 from the same year. The 98 is gonna be my kicker for restricted lakes. 1989 17 ft tracker i gutted and am rebuilding. I know the motor runs i just havent been able to really test it out yet
Those late 1980’s through the early 2000’s were called the no primer motors they got so cheap towards the end and stopped making them good I have a 1994 evinrude 25 freshwater only but it needed water pump primer pull start rope and new motor mounts it runs great I coat my motors with fluid film
What are you using for two cycle oil I use Pennzoil from Walmart semi synthetic $18.00 a gallon on my 25 Check your motor mounts common problem they break
I have used that many times with no issues no issues yet with motor mounts I have sold this outboard with a happy customer sent me an update a year later and still running great

Necro post. What was the compression when they were still in 20hp configuration. I have a 1976 20hp Evinrude, or so the model number says, but the decals say 25hp. There is another user n the net with the same. Both or European versions by the way. For me to check if the mod was done what would the diameter of the manifold be?
When I pulled off my Carburetor there was a small hole In the intake and I bored it it to the carburetor size as it was acting as a restrictor plate the compression was around the same when I tested them when I bought them

What year models can i buy for a parts motor to go with my 2000 25hp el motor?
I can’t give you a accurate answer on that as I have only had one that was a 2000 model I can tell you the body changed slightly but looks like parts like coils and power packs are the same not sure under the flywheel as I haven’t had to do that on a Mercury yet

I know I’m a little late but you are supposed to come off plane slowly so you don’t get transom slap, this goes for all small boats pretty much.
Got it I had to throttle it so I didn’t get water over the back of the transom when coming off plane

it was a solas 15 pitch prop and a 13 pitch when I have more people or loaded down

Is there anyway to adjust the carb idle mixture screws you have the same motor as me but the screws on the carb doesn’t seem to be a control screw anywhere on any of them?
There is not an adjustment on the carbs just the timing settings
I’m stomped on my motor I went through the carbs and they are spotless I’m getting great spark all cylinders my reeds look great and the carbs are sucking air on all that’s why I say the reeds seem to be fine. Out the water starts idle and revs great all the way to 6k rpm in the water starts gets up to about 1600 rpms and won’t go on plane I’ve checked the timing and the full throttle timing looks to be off but I can’t really adjust it more there’s really no issue with the prop spins freely no issues with that so I’m really not sure if the timing would cause it to bogg in the water? Any advice helps you did a great job with your motor! Also I’ve been through the fuel system going to the carbs doesn’t seem to be any issues if any thing I think it just might be getting to much fuel fouling
Also the full throttle timing says to be adjusted to 26btdc and it looks to be at 20
@@truerudeboy1 ya it can definitely bog down if the timing is off that’s why I did it you will have to get a timing light and ground the coils to prevent them from burning up

The Tower of power engines are cool too I just haven’t come across getting ahold of one yet or worked on yet
@@haneysgarage2631 if I'm not mistaken, I think the inline 6 150 was the highest inline HP made by Mercury before the Black Max V6 motor you have here came out. The HP just went up from here in the V6 design. This one you have here screams on the water. It looked too fast to me going over wake. Boat was coming out of the water it appeared.

I would try to look on eBay for a shop manual I don’t know how to download the shop manuals I tried to get the new adobe which cost money but still didn’t work to get it downloaded I’m not sure what I did wrong but I found ones on eBay might have to do some searching

Thanks for all the great info!! I seem to be having a challenge getting the shift linkage to go through the new o-ring I installed. Any suggestions? I did lube it prior to trying to install it.
I use marine grease and slowly slide it in using pressure check to make sure the ring didn't dislodge did you us an oem Johnson/Evinrude rebuild kit.
@@haneysgarage2631 I did use oem but the o-ring looked thicker than the original. The new bolts didn’t want to thread right also so I used the old bolts. I’m wondering if I got a mixture of a couple different repair kits and the o-ring is incorrect.

Hi im a new subscriber I also work on outboards that engine is not a parts motor if you turn it over at the proper speed it probably will have 120lbs on each cylinder
