The Warblers are Back! Fall Migration Activity Begins!
Yay! The fall warblers have stYay! The fall warblers have started to arrive! Some of the warblers we saw this week have been somewhere nearby all summer, like the Northern Parulas that I kept hearing but seldom saw. But others, like the Blackburnian Warblers, haven't been around since spring. But even the ones that have been nearby are much more active now. They always seem to come out of the woods this time of year and form up a little mixed flock that travels around together. In addition to the warblers I got on film this week, I also saw a Worm-eating Warbler and an Ovenbird.
The Tufted Titmice are not happy about the arrival of the warblers. Poor little Titmice. Always having to adjust to newcomers. They'll be okay, though. Come November, they'll have the place pretty much to themselves again. They might as well give up on trying to scare off the warblers. From what I've seen in past years, those tiny birds are pretty persistent.
I think two of our male Scarlet Tanagers are completely yellow now. There's at least one more that's just now starting to change. And the male Indigo Bunting is starting to molt into his fall plumage too. I used to think that the male buntings just left earlier than the females. Didn't realize they were another bird where the male's fall plumage makes him look the same as the females.
I had a lot of good clips this week and debated on whether to do some extra videos but I managed to get the best of them worked into this longer video. I'll go back and look at what was left and maybe post some extras this week.
Thanks for watching! Stay safe out there and I'll see you next week!
Birds in this week's video include Scarlet Tanager, Hooded Warbler, Summer Tanager, Northern Parula, Indigo Bunting, Northern Cardinal, Cerulean Warbler, American Goldfinch, Tufted Titmouse, American Redstart ... and probably some birds I've forgotten, lol.

Color Changing Tanagers! Scarlet Tanagers are Turning Yellow

Fall must be just around the corner because the Scarlet Tanagers are exchanging their bright red feathers for winter yellow. I used to think that the males migrated south before the females, before I realized that they're still here, they just look different. I'm starting to see some more warblers too. I got a female Cerulean on film this week but I also saw an Oven Bird, a Black & White Warble...

This week was a complete rain out. No new bird footage. When there's not much going on around here, I like to go back and look at old videos to see what was happening in previous years. It's a short on this week! We had lots of rain, which we needed, but that means not much opportunity to film the birds. And then, when we did get some sunshine, everyone was busy doing things outside, creating lots of background noise. That's just the way it goes sometimes. It was good to have the rain, and it's good that people are outside getting things done and having a good time. I'm thinki...
Two Cameras for Bird Close-Ups at the Woodland Stream

As the camera-melting heat continued this week, I decided to focus on the Woodland Stream. The tree cover there provides enough shade to keep the GoPros from overheating. The shape of the Woodland Stream water feature makes filming the birds a little more difficult. If I film from far enough back to see everything, the birds in the stream look pretty tiny. So, this week, I set up two cameras, o...

We had a couple fun surprises this week. I rarely see woodpeckers at the bird pond, but a female Red-bellied Woodpecker has decided that she's a water bird :-). She stopped by the pond several times this week and I managed to get one good clip of her enjoying some bath time. The other surprise was a Yellow-billed Cuckoo, a bird that I hear often but rarely see. This is the only the third time I...

We had more hot, dry weather here this week, so there was lots of activity at the bird ponds. It was hot enough that I had some cameras shut down when I tried to do some mid-day filming. I've noticed more birds using the Woodland Stream water feature lately, so I ran cameras there this week. The bluebirds seem to be making the most use of the pool there. I think the water depth is too deep for the smaller birds and I was considering adding more pebbles to make it ore shallow but I think, at least for now, I'm going to leave it deeper for the bluebirds. I may try to adjust the d...

    • @WarblerRidge
      @WarblerRidge Před 8 dny

      This video is actually a larger water feature that uses a bigger pump. I built this one about 12 years ago, long before I started doing CZcams, so I didn’t have any “how-to” video about making it. But people often ask about making something similar for themselves, so I made the mini pond and did the DIY video for that. Although this pond is larger, all of the birds that come to this one, including the Tanagers, also visited my mini pond. The birds seem to really be attracted to small pools like that. Good luck with your project! I hope it brings you and your birds lots of enjoyment.

The birds seem a bit of afraid of it yet but have had a couple of bathers and I was most excited to see an oriole as I don’t sure them until migration starts. Again thank you for taking the time to make the DIY video.

    • @WarblerRidge
      @WarblerRidge Před 8 dny

      I’m jealous about the Oriole! One of my favorite birds but I don’t see them very often. Your birds should get used to the new pond pretty quickly. If they still seem wary of using it, make sure there are some perches nearby for them to sit on to check things out before getting in. A few branches places around the edges works well for that.
