19 Year Old First Pitts S-1S Solo

Come along as my youngest son, Doc (19), decides to take the Pitts up for a little ride for the first time. It's always exciting when someone flies a Pitts Special alone for the first time. We don't have the option for a lot of expensive fancy Pitts Special training camps, so I told him he could do it the way I did it way back when, use your sharp tailwheel skills and just get in and go. Join us for our friend's first S1C solo flight. He had a rough first time but did the right thing by going around, second time was better, I grabbed a radio to offer some soothing encouragement, he looked pretty good but had trouble with feet positioning on brakes and lowering tail while a bit fast which lightened up the mains. He pulled it off, congrats.

so awesome -- Well done1
Maybe a citabria might be a little easier to land if your going to solo in a artabatic plane for first flight. ????
Did you find out where your mate went?
I got sweaty palms just watching that first landing attempt! My dad bought a 180 HP Pitts S-1C in 1986 and died 10 years later. Sadly, he never flew his Pitts. I think he was afraid of it, despite vast experience in taildraggers, from Stearman to Swift, with Aeroncas, Pipers, and Taylorcrafts in between. I never questioned his judgment. I’m sure he would have transitioned into it very successfully, but I guess it just wasn’t meant to be. 😕
crazy how fast that thing bleeds altitude when you chop the power!
At the 7:02 mark, that was a 4-point roll? (i know next to nothin about aerobatics, just curious)
Congratulations!
Simply amazing!!!😻

GOOD JUDGEMENT!SWEET! Give thanks for each flight … goes by so quickly!

Actually, this is great example of proper Pitts video! Finally! Many hide the instruments, footwork, and ruin videos with music, comments, etc.. Well done Doc and your Dad and thanks for showing us real flying!
Great Job!!!
It's just so peaceful and pretty up there. A Pitts just ads to that beauty. Be safe and awesome job.

way late but great stuff
wdym way late? Its not his first solo, but rather his first solo in a pitts. Learning to fly a pitts is no easy task and at 19 years old that's impressive
@@alexg700fHe means that the video has been up for a while before he sent the comment
Well done Doc, Have a lot of fun in this beautiful plane. how many flight hours did you have before you took this step?
Hi Leo, I'm Doc's Dad. It's tough to judge how many actual hours Doc had in total as he, like my other two boys have been 'flying' since they were young with me in GA airplanes. I would guess he had 70 real licensed hours or so. He got his ticket at 17 and has been busy with college and the like.
@@damiandiesel1 This is good info, I really want a Pitts. What plane you think will be best prior to Pitts. I have Super Decathlon time but only about 15 hrs.
I think if you have decent tailwheel skills, an S1C is a great entry into Pitts world. They land slower, are usually lighter and more docile . @@klmelj
@@damiandiesel1 thanks for the info.
well that's awesome , way to go dude, nice kiss, going again 😀😀 I was erm....... 30 ish first solo in a 2b
Great job! Looks more like you’ve been flying it forever. Sweet machine!
Excellent video, i really like the camera angle and seeing all the rudder work. If you want to perfect your pitts landings, i reccommend going to arizona and flying with Budd Davisson
Max soloed his first Pitts at 17, an S2A, not very extraordinary in the scope of things except for the fact that he grew up around planes but not around money. Going to the best for training at $400 or more per hour was never in the cards for us. He had to rely on good tailwheel skills, advice from experienced men , and a fair supply of testosterone, just like Curtis Pitts. We operate from a 1700ft narrow strip w/obstructions at each end (38M Cranland in Hanson Ma) . I've seen him wheel and 3 point with perfection and seen a few bouncers but I rate him extremely competent (as his Dad, subtract the pride and add some bias perhaps). The point I'm making to anyone interested is that it is a great luxury to be able to get specialized training from the best available , a luxury not available to all. But, a regular guy with sharp skills and desire can get by as well, and once you get alone with the plane, your learning curve accelerates upward at a rapid rate. Max and his younger brother Doc are living proof.
That's just so awesome! Takes some skill to do precision aerobatics with those, nice job!
👍
Great video! Always enjoy watching you fly at cranland
So much fun to watch 👍👍
Hey Max, I would say that was a great Pitts landing. I cant score your maneuvers from this angle and as your Dad I may be biased anyway , but I would rate all of it as 10's on the fun scale. A good Sunday for us, first a great Cranland 28M breakfast with great friends, some Pitts acro for you, some RV 6 time for Doc, some 172 for me, motorcycles to Myrics for another airport cookout/fly in, J3 Cub time flour bombs for you, more friends and bikes, Star Drive in , then home. Work hard, play hard, America is great.
A classic example of how easy it is to fly a Pitts if you do it the right way. Well done!!! They say there is one really good thing about a Pitts, and one not so good thing, and both of those are that a Pitts does exactly what you tell it to do. A pleasure to watch a Pitts being flown properly.
Great flying my friend
Directional controls and looking way at the end of the runway
Go for it dude and have the best sole flight in the S-1
There's nothing like flying a Pitts Special. Especially a light weight S1S.
You know it! 796lbs 180hp, Bendix fuel injection and two wings!
Nice job! I was 58 when I first solo’d an S-1!
Never too late to get some fun in!

Hi there I was wondering if I could use this video in a youtube video that im creating about the S2A? If so that would be a big help, thanks.

It's on my bucket list to own one of these. Beautiful airplane excellent landing.
That interior needs a refresh!
The new owner has it all fixed up like new.
incredible! I'm looking at buying a Pitts and my home airport is 2089x29ft. Makes me feel much better about if it's possible to get her in and out
Plenty of room especially for a single place.
200 HP? Angle valve IO 360?
Yes, fuel injected. We get 147kts at 65% power. 21.0 inches 2360 rpm 8.5-9.5 gph.
@@damiandiesel1 I’ll bet it climbs good
@@Max50ww Prop rpm needs set higher, only turning 2550 at full rpm, but still climbs great.

Awesome landing!!
👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
This plane has been sold. Congrats to the happy new owner in Texas on the Mexican Border, Mass to the border in less than 14 hours all headwinds.
Is the plane still for sale?
Watch that open canopy in the wind. They break very easily and are VERY expensive to replace! Don’t think any other aeroplane will ever reward you like a Pitts does. ps. wish you’d omitted the music!!! 😖😖
Sorry about the first song, hard to find good un copyrighted material sometimes. They bounced the first one. I have seen 2 pitts canopies come off on TO that were unlatched, insurance co's no longer covers them.
Damian Frattasio Yes, same problem here in the UK. Hope you are still enjoying the ride. I can’t think of any other aeroplane I’d rather own or fly. Mine operates under a UK Permit to Fly and as such I’m able to carry out most of my own maintenance, guess similar to your Experimental class. Mine has the long undercarriage leg and symmetrical ailerons.
@@Marty43ful Sadly we just sold the S2A and bought an RV6 which is much more practical for us. We have owned and flew many Pitts models over the years. After flying single seat models the S2A was not as "stunning" but fun just the same and quite rewarding to master ( or shall I say aspire to master) I'd be willing to bet that you don't have many 17 year old Pitts pilots in the UK. Max is now 21 and finishing his last year in college as an engineering student, he has surpassed all of my expectations as a son and young man. He has amassed some good time in many different makes and models along the way as has his younger brother Doc who is wrapping up his private pilots training. These damn kids fly better than me ! If you ever visit the USA and are in the Boston area look us up and we will give you the arial tour!
Damian Frattasio You must be very proud of them both. My son never showed much interest in flying , although he had been up in the Pitts with me and done some Aeros himself. I also fly commercially and many years go gave him a jump seat ride, but afterwards told his mother that the most memorable part of the flight was the crew meal he ate! Ah well, he’s happy pursuing other avenues in life. Many thanks for the kind invitation. Made Sun and Fun last year and managed an hour with Jack Brown in a Cub. Will definitely be back again one day. Best regards.
Seems like an honest RV4. What is the asking price?

I apologize for the unscripted walk around, I realize I was jumping around a bit. If any questions come to mind I will answer. For clarification, the worst part of the airframe is the spot next to the right wing landing light. The lifter hydraulic units are new. The fairing screw issues are on the left wing only. It seems from what we can gather the l wing may have been off to address a fuel leak issue in the past and the fairing was not re riveted as was when new, they screwed them back on. Vert fin fairing same attachment as L wing. Again, not a problem, just ugly in my opinion. The internal wing structure is fully primed. Someone asked about the battery and wanted to know if it was an odesey type, it is not. I believe it is better to keep the larger conventional battery in place for W & B purposes on this RV4.
Is this still available, Damian?
Nice and gentle, Bob Hoover would be proud!
Hows the kid doing no new vids in a while
He is doing great, thanks for asking. We have been busy. Max is now 21 and finished his 3rd year at Mass Maritime (marine engineering with minor in facility engineering). He is now doing an internship for the summer on an oil tanker in the gulf of Mexico. He has been flying the RV4 and other planes with his limited time from college. His younger brother Doc, 16 soloed officially last Dec 27th on his birthday but his official training has been set back now due the fact that we lost the engine on the Warrior and need a crankshaft. For a laugh check out a youtube video titled: solo flight 090917.
