Dave Makes Knives

Registrace 11. 11. 2020
Hey guys. Welcome to my shop! I'm Dave, and I make knives!
I am always trying new things in the shop and learning from my mistakes along the way. I make knives and CZcams videos as a hobby but I hope that one day I can commit to this full time.
Do you have any ideas for a custom knife build? I accept commission builds if it is something that gets me excited and would make a good video. Hit me up!

Merry Christmas everyone. Thank you all my subscribers for the support. See you all in the new year! Disclaimer: the blade was forged from the outer race of a ball bearing which is a single piece. There is no damascus or forge welding in this video. kthx bye

I tried a new acid mix to etch the blade. I used a mixture that was recommended in a video I saw by Evader Knives. At least it's how I remember the video. When I tried to reference the video before my acid etch I couldn't find it. The acid mixture is not really an exact measured amount but it is approximately 45% ferric chloride, 45% water and 10% apple cider vinegar. The etch is darker than et...
Making a bread knife from a saw blade

In this video I will make a bread knife out of a saw blade. The handle is made from box elder burl (stabilized) and epoxy resin with brass handle pins and logo pin. The logo pin was made possible by my friend Scott who printed the tiny DK logo inserts on his UV resin printer. Please leave a comment and like the video if you enjoyed it. It really helps! Please also consider subscribing. kthx bye...
Stabilizing wood and making knife handles
zhlédnutí 29KPřed 2 lety
In this video I will be stabilizing some maple burl and making some hybrid resin knife handles. I was going to make one of these in the last video but couldn't wait any longer for the wood to arrive in the mail so I had to move on. To make up for it I have made 8 knife handle blanks in this video. This is truly exciting to have made my own knife handles to use on future knives. I hope you guys ...

Thank 😊 you sir,just learning
That helped me a ton finding the entire process all in one video! Thanks!
3 & 6 are my favorites
Thanks man! I've used up most of these handle blocks now but I am still holding onto #3 and #6. They were some of my favorites too and I am saving them for something special. I've been thinking about doing another video like this and making a new batch of handles as well.
Hey brother could you please share you paper drawing of this knife so i can also print it and make that knife please.
Ok, I've made a tracing of the knife and scanned it. Email me at dkblades1982@gmail.com and I'll send it to you
Book matching the biger blocks by cutting them In half to show the same wood grain and resin on both sides would look really good too
Yes, that is true! I've done it a few times! Thanks for watching 👊
nice blade, congratulations.
Thank you 🙏
Awesome job. Now this made me want to go make more of it.
Well done!...a great video showing ,explaining and filming the process of making this Damascus. You guys knocked it out of the park!!
Thanks Danny! I appreciate it 🙏
looks like you guys put a lot of work into this, good job!
Thanks man!
Love the turn table outro!
Thanks 😎
Good work. Couple of tips. I find the pretwist very important. I have the cable at welding Temps and twist the shit out of it. I have a stepped vice that holds the cable on one end of the cable and a pipe wrench with a rod welded on for leverage for the other end. Make extra weld on the side I am putting the wrench on to get a good grip.
Lately I have been feeling the itch to make more cable damascus. I will definitely try your advice!
holy batman. subscribed
Hey thanks buddy
Looks great keep it up big man!
Thanks Big Dogg
I realize this is an old video, I'd sure like to see you put tape on that blade you spent the time sanding it to get the scratches out why run the risk of scratching it while prepping the handle plus it would help to save those nasty little cuts. IMHO
What can I say? I like to live life on the edge... literally. Thanks for watching!
I want one
Thank you. This was my very first CZcams video from a few years ago. I still use that knife for all my leather projects!
Thank you Dave great job
Thanks Kelly
Amazing job Dave! Can’t wait for the next vid
Thanks bruh
Tedious work but an amazing job!! Saw it personally and wow!!! Looking forward to your next video DK.
Thank you ❤
Nice to see this all come together. Looking good!
Hey Dave. Is there a minimum/maximum thickness for the leather that you have found?
I think its the economy veg tan that I usually order, from Tandy Leather. I would either order the 3-4 oz or the 4-5 oz weight. I honestly don't know exactly which one I have here but it's probably one of those two thicknesses.
Much better than those plastic pieces of -it! Well done and glad to see someone carrying on the crafts we love so much.
Glad you enjoyed it
I switched to this dye it’s amazing. I use burgundy and then lightly go over it with brown and it darkens the burgundy where ever it textured it and adds blackish highlights. Thanks again and good luck to Dan on emailing.
Awesome. I definitely want to try more colors and finishes.
It looks fantastic Dave, good work!
Thank you bro 👊
Good work Dave, good knives to go camping with!
Thanks B
What about using a dabber
Do you mean for applying dye to the leather? I'll show that in part 2.
Thank you
Let me know how we can get this done!
@@DaveMakesKnives I messaged you on instagram
Great vid Dave, cant wait for parts 2 and 3
Thank you bro!
congrats! Great job on the sheath so far Dave. Looking forward to seeing part 2 :)
Thanks 😊❤
Appreciate the vid..the locking mechanism feature is a great idea..Thanks..
I appreciate the feedback! The lock works amazing. I can pull on the knife as hard as I can when it's strapped in and it ain't going anywhere!
It’s difficult to choose a favorite. My husband likes the one with the copper color. I like the light green, transparent blue, transparent red….
Thank you, I appreciate it! The transparent red one got used for making the bread knife which I made a video for. The copper colored one I am afraid to say got ruined during a project. I think it was the pocket knife video that I made. I am very much considering making another resin casting video soon!
Looks beautiful, great job.
Thank you Robert
The video is 1 year old. And it’s brilliant!
Thanks bro
Way to go Dan congratulations, hey Dave Kelly here when will my knife and sheath be ready
Working on it bro. Had to buy some supplies and letter stamps. I am going to start on it tomorrow and will probably have it ready for next weekend.
Great giveaway, cya on your channel - happy newyears 🎉
Super !
Thank you! Cheers!
Congrats Dan! Happy New year DK and son Eric. Keep up the great work, and we look forward to seeing your works of art in the future :)
While I love watching someone with natural craftsman skills, I have to say you talking shit to the wasp and crushing him was video gold.... I had to re watch the whole video because it took a half hour to stop laughing my ass off. Thank you!!!! I needed that laugh
😂
It's okay that I didn't win. We will still be friends 😂😂
😂😂 Happy new year my friend
Lots on the win list
Congratulations to winners
No problem
John!!! Brother! I never heard from you after the first video!! I'm so sorry you weren't in the draw. I entered names for everyone who commented on at least 2 of 3 of the videos. I will do more giveaways in the future on this channel so you can still win stuff in the future. Happy new year sir
Starting
I see you now
W Dan mace
Congrats Dan!
Yeah ! Hope to see more cool knives from your workshop in 2024 💪💪
I am no expert and I did not watch every second< but if temp differences is the issue, I would try to mix the white first. the lesser volume probably made the temp rise more slowly.
When u do the scales off the knife do u ever sand to much and have to GRind on the knife to fix I have always been scared to do it That way cause i feel i i would always sand to much on one and it would end play cat and mouse with it
Thanks for watching! I'm not sure I understand your question though
