This channel is for both coaches and players looking for easy yet effective plays to implement into real game strategies. Our community is unique in that subscribers of my channel are almost guaranteed going to watch, learn, practice, and put into a real game situation the plays learned on this channel. My name is coach Russ. I started playing basketball since I was 6 years old and continued through most of my adult life so far (currently 41 years old in 2020). I've also spent 7+ years as a high school referee and 8+ years as a youth club and high school basketball coach. I initial created this channel and the videos in it for my youth basketball teams. I searched the internet and CZcams for videos or software to create videos. Nothing satisfied my desire for easy to understand instruction that I could confidently send home with my players and know that they could learn the plays while off the court. So, I decided to create them for myself and share them with you.

These are two quick hitters you can run against a 2-3 zone defense. You really need a good passer and decision maker at the 3 position who can maintain control of the ball while reading the defense. Typically, when playing against a team running a zone defense, I like to employ an offensive strategy like Overload or the Triangle. These continuous offensive plays allows for various looks at scoring opportunities based on what the defense is allowing.
With these quick hitters, we are intentionally trying to break down certain vulnerable areas in the zone defense and force the defense to have to communicate; usually something most teams aren't great at doing.
____________________
The 2-3 zone defense is an alternative to man-to-man or match-up defensive strategy used in basketball. It is referred to as the 2-3 because of its formation on the court, which consists of two players at the front of the defense and three players closer to the basket.
The 2-3 zone is usually one of the first zone defenses coaches and players learn and deploy. That’s probably because of it’s intuitive nature and ease of learning. The two players on the top of the zone are typically the two guards; the shooting and point guards. They guard the area of the zone on the perimeter and three-point arc.
The forwards (3 and 4 players) guard the sides of the zone and the center (5 player) guards the lane and center of the zone. When your opponent moves the basketball around the court, the entire zone shifts to cover their designated areas in the zone. As the ball moves throughout the court, the defense shifts simultaneously in the direction of the ball.
Communication is probably the most important thing to remember when playing a 2-3 zone (or any zone defense). Every player needs to talk to each other on the court . Typically, the center acts as a defensive director in the 2-3 zone because they care able to see more of the court. They are always shouting who should be where, what the offense is doing, and acts as the eyes behind the heads of their fellow teammates.
Even though the 2-3 zone is a “zone” defense, every player on the court should always be aware of the where the offensive players are on the court. It’s critical that the defense move to guard an open player than stay within the normal constraints of the 2-3 zone with offensive players that are closer to the basket taking a high priority.
The strength of the 2-3 zone originates at the basket and radiates outward. It’s typically deployed against an opponent who is stronger/bigger inside and are poor perimeter shooters. A general goal of the 2-3 zone is to force the offense to take perimeter shots and prevent entry into the paint by pass or drives.
The 2-3 zone is a very effective defense when teams communicate and rotate properly. It’s generally true that the further away from the basket, the lower the chances of scoring. The 2-3 zone protects the key and is great at preventing penetration into the lane. Because of that, it’s forces perimeter shooting as an offense's most accessible option, thus lowering your opponents overall field goal shooting percentage.
There are some times when using the 2-3 zone would leave your team vulnerable. With the perimeter, especially the 33-point arc, wide open, teams that are great at 3-point shots and mid-range shots can easily dismantle the 2-3 zone. Teams don’t remain in a 2-3 zone for very long when their opponents start knocking down long range shots with ease and consistency. If you’re committed to staying in a zone, your might want to switch to a 3-2 zone against a good perimeter shooting team.
The 2-3 zone requires good communication, teamwork and trust. Every player must know exactly where to be at all times, where their teammates should be, and where their opponents are at all times. Zone defense is more complex than just chasing one player around the court and staying between them and the basket. If you practice all aspects of this zone and defend as one single unit on the court, your team will be formidable with this zone defense.

Cross-screen set for a reliable 3-point shooter along the baseline, behind the 2-3 Zone. Your best jumpshooting post player located at the left wing. 👌 Might be a good suggestion, player movement.
Thanks a lot man, for real! The best video i could've found about it!
Rock the baby, coach! I love your videos! Excellent structure.
used this video to learn how to teach zone to my middle school team, its my first year as a coach and the schools 2nd year with a program and we are 4-2 and just won our leagues mid season tournament
That’s awesome! Congratulations coach!
Thank you coach Russ.
You’re very welcome coach!
A 4-1 is absolutely effective against a 2-3 zone- or any zone for that matter! Good luck coaches!
Great pass and described well
Thank you kindly!
What if they run 3-1-1?
This will work against ANY zone press
Great Video Russ
Thank you! I hope it was helpful.
This really helped me understand more about what my coach tried to tell me, thank you for this video!🙏
Thanks for the positive feedback. I really appreciate it.
I have a player who plays the front line. She asks "why should I run to the middle if I might have to go back to guard the ball' Seriously.
That would be a tough player for me to want to keep on my team or have as a teammate.
Problem with youth bball is the most kids will see that the post player got the ball and they will all cut...there needs to be straightforward rules...like passer cuts or gets the hand off...nit just anybody
Indeed. Patience is definitely something that grows with age and experience. In life and in basketball.
Thanks that helped a whole lot
Thanks for the positive feedback. I really appreciate it.
Nice video. Im from Brazil 🇧🇷

You're welcome. Thank you so very much. I really appreciate your support for my work.
I’m jot better good and just play in the 5th grade traveling team I think this will really help me at my games this weekend
A positive attitude and desire to improve will take your as far as you want to go!
Thanks for the motivation
Totally disagree with what order you must pick players. The Warrior is the key position of the Defense. It is the hardest position to play properly and some teams have NO ONE that can play this position. The Chaser just needs good length and to not be worn out when on the court. You can just have DEPTH at the Chaser position if they don't have the Stamina. The Center position is probably something anyone you could use as the Center or Backline of the 2-3 Zone. But the Wings... you can put just about anybody at the Wings. I will also disagree that the Chaser needs influence the ball to either side. They need to 1st not allow penetration up the middle and when the ball is then passed to 1 side they need to not let the ball be reversed to the other side. And other than being disciplined to know where they should be and being there the Wings don't have to be particularly good defenders. They always have the Warrior or the Chaser to help them trap the ball and the Center or Chaser/Warrior to help them stop dribble penetration. It would be great if ALL of your players were great defenders, of course. But you can hide poor defenders or mediocre defenders in every spot except the Warrior. They can be effective defenders in all 4 other positions if they will be in position, give a good effort and not be out of shape (or playing too many minutes for their level of fitness). But if the Warrior cannot play his role this defense will not work.
Thank you coach more video please..
More to come! I prioritize myself and my family over most things.
Move video coach thank you..
Coming soon! Thanks for your support!
What did you call that play
Is WildKard still active? Every time I try to use it, I get an error message "Sorry .. we found a glitch"
I messaged them last month and they told me they had sold the company.
Can you show how to beat a 2-3 zone using the 5 out????
I wouldn't use the 5 out against a 2-3 zone. That's just my preference.
This is AWESOME! Thanks Coach!
My pleasure! Thank you for the kind words and positive feedback.
More baseline play coach for the wingman please.. Thank you
Against a zone or man-to-man defense?
Lovely play if well executed. Good job!
Thank you very much!
We have a game in less than 4 hours. Wish us luck.
i have one in 2 days , did u win?
how was your match?
More inbound play coach thank you
Can you be more specific? Baseline? Sideline? vs what defense? End of quarter, end of game situations?
More inbound play coach please.. Thank you.
my coach sent me this video for my upcoming game against kbc because we learned how to break press with 4 across but to do a press we did a zone trap once but no one really got it and we got cooked by a top team this really helps ty!
That's awesome! It's nice to read comments like this. Thanks for sharing.
Thank you
You've very welcome. Thanks for the support!
I have been running this defense for a few years, at a middle school level, slightly different. In the high trap, we deny the corner and high pass. In the low trap, we deny the high pass and pass to the block. In both cases, we take away the easiest passes. This leads to many, many turn overs. Thanks for all of your videos!
You're very welcome. Thank you for supporting my work.
Awesome Video. Im curious if the 2 isnt open do they dribble up and reset the look?
Is WildKard still operational. I tried to use it and it kept generating an error message.
I messaged them last month and they told me they had sold the company.
Thank you so Coach 🙏 from India
You're welcome coach. Thanks for supporting my work.
Great job explaining. One of the best I've watched.
Wow, that's high praise. Thank you so much for the positive feedback.
This was great. I've run this before, and will try it again this year, with the additional options you added
Awesome! Please let me know how it goes!
Great video. I would like to see some more scoring options, like handoffs and fake handoffs
Warrior!
Almost everyone we play pulls the ball side guard to the short corner and moves their other guard to the middle of the lane or ball side elbow depending where the offense is set up. Any plays for beating this?
It’s brief and to the point.
yor so good. im just starting to learn basketball
Thanks coach, I will try to use for my JV
You’re welcome!

This offense is easy to follow and remember. Good job Coach.
Thanks for the positive feedback.
Great stuff, I run a 2-3 and Im so focused on the D aspect that when we’re hit with it I get stuck
Thank you 😊
