Try a small braid underneath that goes towards the back roll and use it as an anchor for the top to pin to, I have thin hair and my hair won't pin without an anchor either a small ponytail or braid.
You must have had back shoulder and arm aches for trying to do the curls on the back side of the head. It would be easier if there is a second pair of hands and eyes to do the backside curls. I can't imagine how all the women in the west in the 1930s,1940s, 1950s, and towards the end of the 1960s to have to set up the curls every evening to look pretty the following day to look like Rita Hayworth or Bette Grable or Esther Williams. Today hairstyles for women definitely lack volume, height, fullness: It's all about flatness, straightness, limpness, and simplicity.
Did you learn to do this 1940s hairdo on your own? You did an excellent job. It looks so authentic as if you came from the 1940s. If only more young women would style their hair this way instead of the flat limp and straight haircut.
I learned by doing lots of research and reading old hair magazines! I strive for authenticity so I really appreciate your kind words! I hope I can inspire others to revisit timeless classic hair!
