    Thank you,been looking for this. I am getting interested in the peculiarities of Greco Roman as fundamental type of wrestling. I wonder how it would look like if it kept rules the same but allowed submission. Would you consider making a video about Sumo? Maybe comparing to Greco? I feel they have many similarities and i wonder how much they overlap.

    • @Grapplezilla
      @Grapplezilla Před 2 dny

      Hi Buddy, I’m really happy you enjoyed our video first and foremost, thank you for the compliment!

It’s a really good question in regards to your question of Greco with Submissions, definitely would be interesting to see and I heavily suspect if this ruleset was allowed that we would see a lot of guillotines, neck cranks, Kimura’s and even the possibility of the rare occasional Aikido type Seoi Nage’s coming out of that amazing Greco Roman Wrestling clinch. :-)

Regarding making a video comparison of Greco and Sumo…..sure I’ll definitely make one in the future as there is definitely some overlap between the 2 Grappling styles.

Have a great day buddy and once again, thanks for your support of our CZcams channel.

    arnold allen vs mosvar evloev is a perfect example of what wrestlers will have to deal with once knees to the ground are legal the wrestler kept putting his hands down trying to become a grounded opponent because of knees to the head because wrestling doesnt really work when you can knee someone in the head

  • @jensonthebastard
    @jensonthebastard Před 5 dny

    'wrestling has shown dominance in mma' because you cant knee a grounded opponent as soon as that rule is gone wrestling becomes the most stupid thing you can do in mma lol once you can knee on a grouded opponent as soon as they shoot for a take down you're getting endlessly kneed in the head

      Hi buddy, thank you for watching the video and thanks for sharing your viewpoint. I feel that you definitely brought a very common view by many in the MMA community but I believe I can answer your comment to better answer yours. I'm an older guy and have been watching MMA since UFC 1. I feel that your comment is not based upon deep historical knowledge of the sport but it does have some truth.

If we go back to the early days of MMA (not just the UFC but the Vale Tudo events and events that were held under the term NHB as the term MMA was not even invented yet) you actually saw the absolute opposite to what you stated.

In the past there were soccer kicks allowed on a downed opponent, there were knees allowed on a downed opponent and there were headbutts allowed too. During this period, of all fighting styles, it was Wrestling that produced the absolute scariest fighters such as Tom Erickson, Mark Kerr, Mark Coleman and many others, all of whited used the exact tools your mentioned to smash the opponent’s. Tome Erickson of course on the Brazilian Vale Tudo events, Japanese NHB events and Pride FC, Mark Kerr in the UFC, Brazilian Vale Tudo Events and Pride and Mark Coleman in the UFC and even more so in Pride. Now I must fairly note that not all these events allowed headbutts.

There was also another very specific rule in most of the events at the time which was that many had no time limits which made for a scenario that once the wrestler took down the opponent that they would keep them down and punish them with the weapons you mentioned. Now, as NHB evolved into a much more organized sport - MMA, we started to see wrestlers have a period of problems, especially with time limits and the referee standing fighters up due to lack of action. This led to many fighters (especially strikers) that used “Lay and Pray” tactics to punish wrestlers for takedowns and they did so quite successfully too (Cropcop for example). So we can see that the argument that allowing knees on the ground neutralizing Wrestling in MMA is simply not accurate. Now what is accurate is that MMA is heavily influence by the rules. Certain rules and environments (such as the cage)heavily favor certain styles over others, this is absolutely true. There is no going around the fact that Wrestling has produced the most amount of UFC champions as well as most MMA fighters have added Wrestling into their training. There is no doubt that MMA will evolve as it always has, probably to a cycle where we see those who do not come from a wrestling background winning more and more (we are noticing that now with heavier weight classes and strikers) but….there is no doubt that knees on the ground absolutely benefit wrestlers over any other fighting style as Wrestlers will a majority of of the time attain top position and when they do will knee the opponent. Thank you once again for sharing your viewpoint, watching our video and supporting our channel. Have a good day Buddy :-)

    • @Grapplezilla
      @Grapplezilla Před 26 dny

      Very good question, definitely there are wrestlers who have excellent stamina and use it to their advantage but make no mistake, they are very strong too. A great example of a wrestler who does this is Sidakov. He has perfect technique and is very strong but where he really excels is in keeping the pace of the match up and many times beating his opponents through fatigue thus casino g them to make a mistake that Sidakov capitalizes on. In order to wrestle this way you need to be in top shape, make sure you are at the correct weight class for your build, train with a lot of circuit training and running hills, wrestle many many rounds each practice, increase your flexibility as it will help you counter wrestle - especially in par terre and you must be very technically sound so that when the opponent is tried you can attack properly. So that said, I would first and for most work on your muscular stamina and cardiovascular fitness through circuits and hill sprints then second get to a proper weight where you can perform at peak ability.

      An interesting (and sad) development was that mens freestyle virtually disappeared as a sport and all the focus for men was put on Greco while womens wrestling started to grow. Our womens team is doing pretty well, producing European champions and a world medal every now and then. There seems to have been a slight resurgence of mens freestyle lately, in part due to migration from more freestyle heavy countries I believe. Khamzat Chimaev is an example of this. Former UFC fighter Mats Nilsson told me a story of approaching his local wrestling club and asking to train freestyle with them. “What? You want to train girls wrestling?” was their reply 😄

    Luta livre and catch is far more position before submission, unnecessary risks especially in Catch wrestling aren't taken. It's frowned upon to give away top position to attack a submission. Imagine pulling guard to go for a submission very common in BJJ frowned upon in Catch and Luta Livre, think hooking in to take the back, in catch theyll stand and submit whenever possible.

    How does this compare to catch? Does it have subs too or is it takedown/top/pin?

    • @Grapplezilla
      @Grapplezilla Před 2 měsíci

      Hi, great question! So Luta Livre was heavily influenced by Catch Wrestling due to the fact that it’s founder Euclydes Hatem was a Catch Wrestler himself. Hatem created Luta Livre by taking Catch Wrestling and adding Kosen Judo and Ground Striking, which led to Luta Livre diverging itself as a different art/system than Catch. Luta Livre definitely has submissions and is very focused on submissions but there is no emphasis on only submitting from the top position as they allow positions from the guard position as well as bottom position. The interesting thing is one of the major differences between Luta Livre and it’s Brazilian Rival (BJJ) was the fact that in Luta Livre there is no heavy emphasis on playing guard and bottom game, there is more an emphasis on attacking for a submission or choke regardless of if the person is top or bottom. This must be noted as this facet of Luta Livre is definitely derived from Catch - the facet of Submission before position and hitting subs from anywhere and everywhere. So if we look at how it compares to catch, it is definitely in the same “family” of arts and they would be considered like “Cousins” (if that makes any sense). Both are truly great arts and have produced true grappling and MMA specimens that have competed and dominated at the highest levels of MMA. Have a great day. 🙂

      @@tamamalosi This is one of the issues when trying to learn Catch as unlike BJJ, there is not the same amount of Catch instructors (well not now at least) in comparison. I would try to go to some seminars, especially off they are being done by top level Catch instructors like Erik Paulson (he is Excellent as he is also a high level Jiujiteiro), Josh Barnett, Neil Melanson, Tony Cecchine, Jake Shannon and others. If you can’t find a seminar or school near you then another tip would be to look for a SHOOTO (shootwrestling) gym or an AMC Pankration type gym, these will mix it up more with MMA so if you are looking for pure grappling to add to your BJJ, it may not be what you are looking for. If you can’t find the above, then perhaps take some folkstyle or freestyle wrestling as this will at least give you a lot of the same attributes that Catch advocates such as top game dominance, scrambling and pinning. Add it onto your BJJ and it starts to look quite similar to Catch, not the same but very similar. Last is to try learning via videos as in the last years there has been a lot of great material put out on Catch. I am always an advocate of first and foremost learning from an instructor in a live setting but not all of us have that privilege so this is where videos come along (just don’t become a technique collector). Hope this helps, and thanks for watching my video! 🙂

    Im just trying to figure out what the difference between grappling and wrestling is but can't find anything on it that makes any sense to me.

      It’s an excellent question! It first must be noted I’m a bit older and have been grappling and wrestling since a kid so during the years (already over 40 years) there has been a lot of change in the grappling world due to the UFC, BJJ and availability of information from the internet itself. That said, when talking grappling, it can be defined as a fighting technique based on throws, trips, takedowns, sweeps, pins, holds clinch fighting, ground fighting and submission holds. The moment someone grips, then it is grappling. Now, Wrestling is a type of Grappling, simple as that. But…In the late 90’s (1998 to be exact) there was a new sport emerging called submission fighting which is also known as submission wrestling, submission grappling as well as nogi grappling which had its first proper competition held called the ADCC Submission Fighting World Championships (ADCC was the short for Abu Dhabi Combat Club) which was held in Abu Dhabi, UAE. The ADCC would be become the premier submission fighting competition in the world. Years later, submission fighting would become recognized by the official global body for wrestling (the same global organization that oversaw Olympic Freestyle Wrestling and Greco Roman Wrestling). The organization at the time was called FILA (which stood for in French as: Federation Internationale des Luttes Associees) but changed its name in 2014 to UWW (United World Wrestling). In 2007, FILA would start holding competitions called “Grappling” competitions. The competitions were basically Submission Fighting (like the ADCC) but with slightly different rules and more of an emphasis on takedowns. FILA would hold Grappling competitions till 2013. Grappling would come back but under UWW (as the organization would change its name from FILA to UWW as mentioned above) and start holding competitions once again under the name “Grappling” as well as holding a yearly “UWW World Grappling Championships”. Since the creation of the ADCC, there have been many amazing Nogi Grappling competitions that have been held as well as many organizations created a “Nogi” division (for grappling styles that use a Gi, Jacket but have competitions without the Gi, hence the name Nogi). The largest (in terms of participants) of all the federations being the IBJJF (International Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Federation) that now has a No Gi competition. So that is a small overview that will help us get to your question. So if we look at the wording, then Wrestling is Grappling, so would be BJJ, Judo, Sambo, Bokh, Catchwrestling, Shuai Jiao, Chidaoba, Ssireum, Pankration and more…. All of these are styles of Grappling.i Yet…When someone says that they practice Grappling or when they say they are entering a Grappling competition, generally it refers to Submission Fighting / Submission Wrestling / Submission Grappling competition where there is no use of a Gi, the objective is to win by submission and there is no penalty for being on one’s back nor ability to win by pin. I know it’s very confusing, but I hope this answers your question and I wanted to give you a bit of history on the term “Grappling” as it can reference to several meanings all of which are somewhat interchangeable. Have a good day and thank you for watching my video and leaving this great question.

    Great video, very good content and well explained, blue belt in Luta Livre here, with all due respect, Luta Livre is not a step back from Jiu Jitsu but a step forward, don't get me wrong, Jiu Jitsu is an efficient martial art yes, but it is not the most developed of the grappler arts, Luta Livre, ancient Judo, Catch as Can and Sambo, are much more developed arts than Jiu Jitsu, the creators of Jiu Jitsu, Carlos and Hélio Gracie, Luiz França, Oswaldo Fadda, and other great masters, always vehemently stated that Jiu Jitsu can only be fought with kimono, Jiu Jitsu fighters said that Luta Livre was for the poor people in the favelas who didn't have money to buy kimono and called them Sapateiros (Shoemakers), because they applied heel hooks to finish the fights... Time passed, but the hurt or who knows the huge Ego of Jiu Jitsu with "the shoemakers without money from the favela" continues to be great, so much so that they started teaching their students to be shoemakers, they teach them to take off their kimono too, but they still continue to call themselves Jiujiteiros... One thing that is truly admirable is the propaganda of the Gracies and the competence of Jiu Jitsu federations around the world, they certainly give our Luta Livre Federation a real beating.

    I have a question; does weight class change the availability of takedowns? I'm a BJJ White belt heavyweight (6'2 270-ish pounds), I've found on larger opponents or more skilled opponents I'm relegated to countering takedown attempts and working from the bottom. I'm tough to single leg, I'm struggling against trips and other exotic throws.

      Hi, Great Question! Weight class definitely has an effect on what types of takedowns are easier to perform over others, this doesn’t mean that heavier weights can’t pull off all takedowns but there are certain takedowns and takedown chains that are much more common to see when heavyweights are wrestling. I will leave a short answer first and the long answer beneath. Short answer is that HW wrestlers should focus on: Go behinds, Slide by, Double leg (especially from the single leg position as easy to finish), Sweep Single, Front Headlock (make them carry your weight  ), Underhook to knee pick, Head and arm throw. The biggest issue I see is that most beginner wrestlers cannot pull off singles because they are not concentrating on where their hip placement is compared to their opponent’s, so they end up going for the takedown without securing the right hip positioning thus making it very easy to defend. Now for the Long Answer: The main concern when going for a takedown on a heavyweight is going to be the ability of the opponent to defend and not get their weight stuck on top of you when attempting the takedown. One of the most common issues that’s not spoken about when it comes to HW wrestlers is the issue of Par Terre right after the takedown as the Par Terre for HW’s is slightly different in order to deal with their weight on top. Now I understand in your case being a BJJ practitioner that this is not so relevant for you but it’s always important to think where you end up after your takedown is done so that you can implement your game and force your opponent to carry as much weight as possible from the moment you are on top. Now in terms of Nogi Takedowns that are more focused for BJJ and Submission Wrestling, you definitely want to first and foremost work on creating pressure on the opponent in order to open up the takedown, this simply means using force, movement, timing and proper hand fighting position to get the takedown. So a good example would be you lock up with your opponent and immediately snap their head down while keeping your weight on the snap and thus getting a front headlock (in the case of BJJ, you can go for the Guillotine and other chokes from this position). Once you have the front headlock position, then based upon where you opponent’s foot and leg placement are, you can then go for the appropriate takedown from that position. I would also focus fully on takedowns that do not leave you in a bad position should you fail the takedown as once again, having a HW opponent land all that weight on you if you failed the takedown is not optimal and makes it easier for you opponent to counter you. In regards to your issue of counter wrestling and being thrown by trips and exotic takedowns, I would say to try to work more aggressively and attack them only when you attain a good hand fighting position. Try to always open them with snaps, try to get underhooks and make them carry your weight the moment they clinch you. The fact your opponent uses exotic takedowns can be frustrating but generally speaking, once you figure out how to properly defend an exotic takedown, usually such takedowns leave the opponent in a bad place when they are countered properly. Focus on the basics and high % takedowns and MOST IMPORTANTLY focus on the hand positions and hip position before the takedown as if you get a good body position, the takedown comes much much easier. Now in terms of Gi takedowns for HW’s, try to focus on takedowns like Harai Goshi and Osoto Gari. The Gi takedown that I personally like which I am not sure the name is when I have a grip on one side of the lapel and pull downwards very hard while on the other side, I lower my hips and grab the opponent’s leg and pull the lapel slightly towards me while lifting the leg (works very similar to a wrestling takedown in movement). I found this worked amazingly on HW’s and leaves you in a great position to pin and attack. Hope this helped and keep on training and don’t worry if you aren’t getting the takedowns as with more and more practice, you’ll start taking down everyone! Thanks for watching the video and have a great day! 🤼

      @@Grapplezilla Thanks so much for the insight! I'm only about 6-7 months and one comp in to BJJ so I shouldn't be too critical to myself. I'm a bit passive as well for the exact reason you mentioned previously; falling into bad spots or just getting rolled over. I'm definitely drilling more wrestling before my next comp!!!

    That’s a low single?

    • @Grapplezilla
      @Grapplezilla Před 3 měsíci

      Very good question. When we shot the video we wanted to state that this technique is done when a single leg is done at a lower level than usual (right near the knee so the opponent can slightly be pressed under the knee). We said it was a low single when we should have said when the opponent is too low on their single. A true low single is much lower and has the attacker having the palm of the hand around the back of the heel and shoulder locking the other side of the foot. John Smith style 🙂

    sorry, I'm a beginner... if someone drops both hands in front, then the opponent gets a point?

    • @Grapplezilla
      @Grapplezilla Před 3 měsíci

      Hi, great question. So in Freestyle wrestling there are points given (in this case would be 2) if you can get the opponent to the ground and you must show control. Control would be established after you would go behind the opponent. If the opponent has both hands down, it still is not 100% control so the points will not be given. This gives the opponent a chance to scramble and reverse and in many scrambles, bot hands will already be on the ground.
