That is an unusual mic . Be careful of the little dowel pin in your quill if you use that big annular cutter . Cheers Dean 👍
Thanks for the video. I'm working on a different drive, but the similarities are close enough. Can you comment on the scale you used for testing the bearing preload? Is that just a normal weight scale?
Yes, the one I was using is just a luggage scale. A fish scale would work just fine too. Although there may be a fisherman's lie factor to adjust for 😂LOL
The older Starrett catalogs have the thread information for the Fractional Taps and dies from 1/16-72 and up. I have many fractional thread taps.
Thanks Jim, interesting info ...
Unbelieveable mic, thank you so much for showing.
Thanks your welcome
I like that mic. Thanks for the video keep on keeping on.
Thanks Harold.. KOKO
I like that mic. Thanks for the video keep on keeping on.
Cool micrometer!
Very nice work sir. I’m jealous. Those tools looks great
Thanks !
Love the micrometer. I saw the discussion on PM recently about those mics. Pretty interesting.
Thanks Tom, Those old timers were pretty clever...
That is a beautiful pice! The micrometer that is. Basically jewelry!
Very cool stuff, that sharpening jig is awesome
@@smalltownmachineshop6860 thanks Adam !
Very nice. I am always glad to see tools go to good new homes and get looked after and enjoyed.
Gday Dean, the micrometer is fascinating in the way it works, I’ve never seen one like that before but I wouldn’t be to keen on pulling it apart that’s for sure, nice additions to the workshop mate, cheers
@@MattysWorkshop Thanks Matty, Yeah, I thought about seeing how it works inside but scared that I could never get it back together…Lol Cheers….
Hi Dean, thank you so much for the shout out and showing my sticker. It's very much appreciated. I love the micrometer. Such a clever and unusual design. The tool grinding jig and the tap and die set was a wonderful find. Thanks again Dean, Cheers Nobby
@@nobbysworkshop You’re welcome, Nobby. Yes it’s a really neat Mic, made without CNC or CAD. Cheers…..
enjoyed….interesting tools
Odd tools Dean. What is standard today wasn't so standard at one time.
That mike is a museum piece. Just wondering how much it would cost to buy it new today :)
@@Rustinox thanks Rusty, yeah, I didn’t even notice that the numbers changed until I started cleaning it. Definitely unique.
Loved this video on some very interesting tools . Maybe those taps and die are unique to gunsmithing model engineers like to use BA treads Kit from down under
Interesting stuff. Always learn something from your videos. Thanks for sharing the info.
@@jimpritz4169 thanks Jim !
I picked up a Union tool chest from a retired gunsmith and it had all sorts of similar dies in it.
@@MyLilMule nice thanks Greg!
I changed mine still attached also. Now I’m really glad I did. That was a lot! Looks like fun though. I might give her a go next time now that I know the process thanks
Sorted . Great result . Being a new chuck , you got away with the jaws preloaded the way . Cheers 👍
Thanks Max !
Dean, what do you think about the difference between jaws in compression vs in extension for grinding? I ask because it is going to be high on my list, once I find someplace to unpack my shop...
Yeah compression is the way to go, but not easy to setup. I did it on one with 2-peice jaws using longer outer bolts to catch the tensioning ring. Robin Renzetti has a real good video on using a bearing race and a hard turned engagement slot. I did think about using a carbide drill to put some pin bores in the jaws to engage a compression ring. The rabbit hole was just getting too deep.. Great comment Thanks!
@@TheAyrCaveShop Thanks!
I admire your tenacity in sticking with this - you learned plenty and that's a huge deal. Personally I have given up on the cheapo chucks at this point because it's too much effort to fix them, detracting from the jobs I want to do with what little time I can get in the shop. That said - just goes to show what you can do if you put your mind to it. Great work!
Thanks Stuart, it was a free chuck that came with the lathe. Yeah I've learned my lesson on the cheep stuff too.
Free is a pretty darn good price though. 😆
The Hung Pow chuck lives to fight another day. Good job!
Bruce Lee would approve 💪💪
Great job Dean!
Thanks Phil !
Gday Dean, definitely a win, it may have been easier and cheaper to buy another chuck but then you wouldn’t of had the opportunity to learn what you have, you did a great job mate, cheers
Thanks Matty, and having fun with shop toys 👍
I forgot to explain what the issue was with these chuck jaws; They were not ground parallel to the centerline axis. So it was posable to indicate a workpiece concentric, but it would orbit that indicate spot like an hourglass.
I would call that a win too. Very nice result. This was an interesting "go for it" project.
Thanks Rusty, it was a long road but got there in the end.
enjoyed….nice discussion and work
Thanks Chuck !
Great job on grinding the jaws. Getting to half a thousand is amazing. Cheers Nobby
Thanks Nobby, Yeah the main issue was the bell-mouthing.
I have to do my three jaw. Lately I've been thinking or just buying a new one. Thanks for the inspiration Dean.
Thanks Randy, yeah the 3-jaws are easier to do, go for it 👍
Buying a new chuck is not going to teach you anything . Doing will improve your skills on your hobby . I use to hate boss who would say I can't give that job to the apprentice he will only fuck it up ! How will he learn ! Kit from down under
Thanks Kit, this was great confidence builder. I might even take on building from scratch a D1-4 backplate for a another chuck in need. Cheers...
Good job on getting the taper out of the jaws. Thanks for sharing Dean.
Thanks Randy !
Good one Dean . My ones could do with a strip & clean . One day ! Cheers 👍
well done.
Excellent work! Great to watch. Yes, please film the rebuild process of the 280!
Thanks Nick !
Very nice chuck
I have a 0-1/2" Albrecht that I recently serviced (didn't do a video). I used a stone on all the sliding surfaces, and that did wonders. To put the bearing balls back in, I 3-D printed a fixture that I inserted from the back of the shell, then dropped all the balls in around it. The fixture had a smaller diameter stup that the hole for the arbor that's in the body would fit over. I then pushed the fixture out the back with the body of the chuck. Made it a lot easier than I imagine it was trying to set those balls in one by one into the grease.
Some very useful information, and well explained Dean. I'm sure it will be useful one day. Cheers Nobby
Nice save Dean. Good reference video for the future. Sometimes the littlest things are the biggest mystery. I miss Enco they had some decent prices on their products. Thank for the video and Happy 4th.
Nice one sir, thanks for showing that. That’s a fiddly little device but great to have the info available for others to see.
Nice save Dean. I have a similar chuck. It's the bigger one. Good to know what's in there. Take care.
Thanks Randy, I had visions of having to buy a new one..
Gday Dean, that was really interesting and well explained, thanks mate
Thanks Matty !
Thanks Dean. Where did you get the chuck?
Picked it up at a engineers / machinist estate sale. I've never seen another one like it. Thanks Terry 👍👍
I did the same on one of my drill chuck two weeks ago. But the cup shape part on the screw is broken, so my drill chuck became an artefact. But you have a nice win here. Back on track again.
That's a bummer. Thanks for the view Michael.. It's nice for small work, happy its working again.
great discussion and instruction/how to…
Thanks Chuck !
Probably made by Llambrich.
Hummm I'll have a look, Thanks !
spot on Dean👍👍👍👍🛠🛠🛠🛠 atb Kev

How was the bash? You score some swap meet goodies?
Couldn't make it this year.. conflicting family plans. I did get to meet Clark E. and Mike W. traveling with Keith R. up here two days after. That was nice.. And I won a wiggler in the raffle 👍👍
Possible to have you rebuild my 290sp
