The Beatles: Got To Get You Into My Life (Drum and Tambourine Cover)
“Got To Get You Into My Life” is the penultimate track on The Beatles’ 1966 album Revolver as well as being the first Beatles song to feature a horn section. A homage to the Motown sound from the 60s, the song was written primarily by Paul who explained that the song is actually an ode to pot and not another person.
Recording of the song commenced on April 7, 1966 during the second day of recording for the album. The first takes featured a harmonium played by Paul and an acoustic guitar from George as well as backing vocals from John and George. Take five from this date would be eventually released in 1996 on Anthology 2, while the complete take without a fade out would be released in the Revolver Super Deluxe box set in 2022. The following day, the song had a new arrangement and takes six, seven, and eight were recorder with eight being the take selected for overdubs. The song sat untouched for over a month until work was resumed on May 18 with the addition of the brass instruments. Included in the deluxe box set as an unnumbered mix from the April 8 session, as well as take eight which highlights the brass section.
Ringo’s drum part on the song is pretty straightforward. It’s a quarter note groove on the hi hat during the verses and switches to the ride cymbal during the choruses. I always liked how Ringo keeps time on the hi hat during the intro and interludes throughout the song. It’s just simple quarter notes on the hi hat, but I think it’s just so interesting. His fills are strictly limited to the snare and rack tom acting as transitions between the song’s various sections. As the song starts to fade out, Ringo can be heard switching the fills up and even goes over to the floor tom (2:23). The fills from 2:19 onward go pretty much unnoticed in the song as they are buried by the brass instruments and heard right as the song ends. However, deconstructed videos of the isolated tracks in the song allow listeners to hear what Ringo is playing. It’s too bad they are pretty much nonexistent in the final release because they are some great fills. But it’s great to hear them nonetheless.
Thank you for watching and I hope you enjoy!

*Backing track had to be lowered in volume and slightly in pitch to avoid copyright* Almost two years ago, we were gifted with a lovely super deluxe edition of the album Revolver that came with many goodies. A little over two years ago, I had uploaded a cover of "What Goes On" which I'll admit had a few inaccuracies. To start, I was doing Ringo's hihat swish pattern which he does not do when playing fast shuffles like this.
