Hello, friends! I'm Dr. Stephen Ray, and I've been documenting my journey through dental school and into dentistry for years. On this channel, I've created a collection of videos that chronicle my four years of dental school, starting as a lonely D1 during COVID and ending as a complete Doctor of Dental Surgery. I cover various topics related to dental school and am excited to begin creating videos aimed at my fellow dentists and prospective patients. This channel is all about passion, creativity, self-care, service of others, and brightening up the world one smile at a time. Join me on this journey and subscribe today!
Reacting to My BAD First Dental School Video
🦷🧠 A lot has changed over the past four years. One of the many changes has been my ability to create a video. Today, we're reacting to my first dental school "day in the life video" which I filmed as a D1. I havent seen this video since I created it, and I will be giving you my full reaction and thoughts to everything I see in this video. This video was really where things started for my channel, and it is surreal for me to finally be able to revisit it all these years later. Graduation is coming up! It'll be here very soon!

Hi, I couldn’t find your updated review on your Lumadent loupe. If anyone has seen his updated review, could you please share the link?
Well worth it.😁
Thank you SO VERY MUCH, my friend!!
Lol bro you had me cracking up 😂 reacting to yourself lol
I mean it’s crazy how much things change in four years
Are these still the methods that you used all the way through? Asking now as you have recently graduated!
Yeah pretty much!! Later in dental school, we didn’t have nearly as much didactic work to do and therefore less organization of courses etc. But I did still have to organize everything in my life, and I made other videos showing how I did that!
How many years of school to become a dentist??
Thanks for the question! 4 years of undergraduate studies to earn a bachelors degree (not strictly required but highly encouraged) and 4 years of dental school to become a DDS or DMD. Additional specialty training can take place after dental school for anywhere from 1-6 extra years depending on the specialty.
Hello Dr. Stephen i have a question, would you recommend making anki cards in the summer to save time during the school year?
Not really! I would just enjoy the summer! Plus you won’t have all the material you will be tested on throughout the year so I honestly just see this as overworking yourself!
Hi Stephen I wanted to tell you that I passed 2nd year and I’m officially a 3rd year dental student!! I wanted to ask you how can I increase my gpa in dental school, id appreciate anytips 😊
Thanks for watching and commenting!! Congrats on making it to year 3! If your dental school experience is like mine was, year 3 marks the beginning of your time in clinic and you will have less didactic coursework. You will still have coursework though so year 3 becomes much more about balancing everything. I would just give you the general advice of stay organized in every aspect of dental school. Organize your clinic supplies, clinic schedule, PowerPoints, coursework schedule, etc. This usually takes a few hours at the beginning of the semester but it’s highly worth it to have something to reference that can keep you on track!
Thank you 👍
You are welcome! Thank you!!
Did you open your own clinic or did you team up with your dad? I may have missed the details in a previous video. I’m interested in the part they don’t teach y’all in school; buying into a clinic, as an associate how is pay structured. Do they give you the overflow patients or do you have to bring in your own new ones. Ways to structure buying out an older retiring dr clinic. They teach y’all how to do dentistry as a practice but not how to run a dental business. Some of the older dentist say it isn’t financially viable any more. 6 months after graduating your school loans come due! So it is impossible to go out and buy into a practice and that is why big corporate dentistry is taking over, because the new kids coming out are so financially strapped that they have to go straight to work for the DSO’s. How valuable would you put it to be able to walk into (or buy into) a family members clinic that is ready to retire. I am assuming there would be some great benefits to that in hopes of some owner financing. Now that u have gone through this what suggestions and insight do you have.
This is a great question Brad and I hope to really dive into this topic in future videos! I am buying my dad out of his portion of his dental practice. He is essentially becoming a contractor of our business and will continue to do dentistry but will take on an easier role while I will become a partner. Obviously, this is a great gift to me and something I never want to take for granted as much new graduates don’t have the opportunity to buy a practice right out of school. That being said there are plenty of viable options for working after school and dentists are still sought after professionals. I think what I’ll do is commission that advice of some of my friends a few months after everyone has started working and put together a list of options and the pros and cons of those options in a video.
I can’t wait to hear about the business side of it. My son, a D1 has an aunt that has a single dentist practice and owns her own custom built building and she is looking to retire. I am pretty certain she would sell to him and give him some favorable financing, on both the practice and the building. I just think it is too early for him to make any kind of decisions, he is still wanting to explore the various specialties and I’m not sure he wants to move to where her clinic is. But I would love to hear your take on being able to walk into and up and running profitable practice with owner financing on the practice and building. I’m not even sure banks would finance a new dentist with lots of school loans and then $1m for a building and $1m for the practice. Any videos on your insight of buying into a family members clinic, the various buy out structures and may any hurdles that you were able to overcome come. I totally understand stand that while yall are in school and being pushed to your max, four years feels like a life time, but for us parents those 4 years are like a drop in the bucket. Any cool videos on your transition into the real world would be amazing. I was told that as a new dentist production is much slower so commissions are lower. Could you possible interview some of your friends that may have gone corporate and compare and contrast their new experience with yours. So many video ideas. As a father I want to be as well versed as possible so I am able to help my son in any way I can.
Glad you graduated and are home! Thank you again for my smile and the confidence to be happy again!
I’m jealous you get to practice in your hometown! Idk if that’s possible for me.
Congrats!
So proud of and inspired by you, Brother. From a future doc to an actual doc, CONGRATULATIONS 🍾 🦷 Thanks for the channel.
How much years you study in dental school?

My Anki is completely different. I have no access to Browse and take any decks from others. I cannot find any Decks from others. I don't understand how it is working...My Anki does not work like and don't look like that...
Great instruction. Can I save a flashcard as a pdf to print?
Great video! Thank you for your work! I used to be a moderator of the medical school anki subreddit (Wildcard Workflow)! I'm making an anki deck for the Family Medicine community (Famki) now and I'll share your vids with a family member of mine interested in applying for dental school!
Such a relatable intro.
Your videos are too long lol
Hi, I attempted Example 4 on my own before you explained it, but how did you only get 2 without painted sides for the number of sides that had 0 painted? Shouldn't the answer be 3? Correct me if I'm wrong, maybe I'm a bit confused still.

Hi Stephen, thanks for sharing this! Love the Q&A. Just wanna share with you that Jesus loves you! We don't have to go through a Catholic priest to connect to God, we can do so directly by praying to Him!
Praise the Lord! The Catholic Church doesn’t teach that we have to go through a priest to get to Jesus! That is a misconception of Catholic teaching. The Church teaches that Jesus gave a special priestly role to his twelve apostles and that they then passed down that special role to other men as is evidenced in the replacement of Judas by Matthias by the guidance of the Holy Spirit in Acts Chapter 1. God created the priestly order with Adam in Genesis and it didn’t end with Jesus. Jesus is our High Priest and He established a new order of priests in His new covenant to offer the most important sacrifice in history: The Eucharist which is the new and eternal covenant. Check out Pints with Aquinas on CZcams to learn more! Thanks for the comment and God bless!
Hello! I’m a Highschool student that just finished his freshmen year and I’ve wanted to be a dentist for a while and the questions I always ask myself is dentistry worth it? How much debt will I get into and is it a stable job?
This is still relevant in 2024! Downloaded it today and I'm already using it thanks to you. Thanks for the help, brother
Is there any way you could share the link to your anki decks??
Love from Pakistan 🇵🇰
Here when he graduated!!!
Hey Dr. Stephen, I am guessing I can call you that. Would you go into dentistry for the money aspect of it? Is it a good step towards financial freedom and time freedom?
How do i see words that I already finished review I want to review it though everyday together with new words, how do i do that?
