The Origins of Clan Mackay: A Brief Overview
zhlédnutí 4,3KPřed rokem
Clan Mackay! One thing you must remember from this video is that our history is extremely detailed as it is connected with the history of Scotland as a whole. I have done my best to give a fair rendering in the amount of time I had, but things will be missed. Also, remember that there are differing opinions of our origin story. That being said, we hope that you enjoy and please send this out to...

Hello fellow Mackay here !
Nice to know this
Dude the volume
Hello my clan
Very interesting! Thank you!
The weathered style would've been worn by Jacobite Mackay's if we had any Jacobites 😂😂😂😂
I read that the McKays of southern Scotland are connected to clan Davidson rather than the McKays of the north.
I am a Mackay born in South Africa... My Great.... Great....Great Grandfather was a Scottish man who came and settled in South Africa.
That is a great story! What was his name?
My name is Lance Mackay... This is interesting information. Thank you
Wonder if there is anyway to purchase or claim these old crofthouses.
I know some are for sale throughout Scotland, but I’m not aware of who owns the land In Poulouriscaig.

My 7th GG is Capt. James MacKay from Scoury, Sutherland, Scotland, who came with Oglethorpe and settled the town of Darien, among others. He left the plantation of Strathy Hall in Georgia. I can trace a direct line to Aed, Earl of Moray. My son's ancestry is the MacKays and the Murrays. I love hearing about the history of the Scotland Highlanders.
My 7th great grandfather is Capt. James MacKay of Scotland and Strathy Hall, Georgia.
So cool!!
My father was born in 1938 in Strathnaver and grew up there. When he was a kid his best friend lived in a big house that also shared animals in a place called Rhifail on Strathnaver. I know that part of the country well. I’m in the US now.
Do you know what town he lived in?
@@clanmackaysocietyofscotlan1311 in a barn in Rhifail, Strathnaver, about 8 miles south of Bettyhill. His brother still lives nearby, he might still know the details. PS My mum was close friends with Lord Reay’s sister. Great lady, died a couple of years ago.
awesome
This type of home/barn used to be common on Dutch farms, c. WWII
I love that insight!
This is so ang cool, keep doing what you do this is awesome^^
My Mother is a Galloway and my Dad is a Donaho.
Very helpful information
Just found out Hugh Mackay was my 11th great grandfather
We might have the same line!
Chris, you always do so well with these.
Every day is a school day
I agree Sandra!
The words of an expert
I'm a Mackay made in America with Scottish parts
The white sandy beach? Or seabright? The grey sky 😂😅
I'm a Mackay made in America with Scottish parts
They said that my family comes from this clan( Surname McCoy)
Definitely a strong possibility! Are your McCoys Scottish?
@@clanmackaysocietyofscotlan1311 yes
@@clanmackaysocietyofscotlan1311 we're also Catholic, and very tall, I noticed lowland Scots tend to be shorter I'm 6'2 my father is 6'6 and his father was 6'3
I am a McCoy and was told this is the clan we are from. How is a McCoy connected to the Mackays
McCoy, MacKay, Mackie are all derived from the Gaelic word MacAoidh. It basically translates to son of Aoidh/Aedh. Do you know where your McCoy line traces to? Do you know a specific region or city?
@@clanmackaysocietyofscotlan1311 not exactly but trying to figure it out. I just know from ancestry test that my dna comes mostly from north Scotland and my grandfather told me we where from northern Scotland. Also my grandmother is a Livingston from Scotland that came to America in 1650.
@@stevenmccoy6499 very interesting! I hope you can find some links. Hope to see you in future comments!
@@clanmackaysocietyofscotlan1311 I have found my direct grandfather Iye Du (Aodh, Black Eye) Mackay, 12th Chief Of Clan Mackay also called Aodh McKay of Strathanaver and followed my grandfathers all they way to Angus Dubh MacKay, 7th of Strathnaver. But I cannot find anything further. Do you have any other information on my grandfathers that will help me date farther back. Thanks
@@stevenmccoy6499 wow, you are definitely of the line of the MacKay!
I am Clan Mackay also known as MacCroinan Sons of Aodh MANU FORTI
Th video was good, I forwarded it to my sone who camps in his Kilt. Oh yes, having a pint of Guinness while watching the video was spot on.
My understanding is that Poulouriscaig was a clearance village (a village established due to the Highland clearances) and so would not have been there at that earlier date. My great-grandfather was from Poulouriscaig. Most of his children I believe went overseas (my grandfather did too but returned to Britain).
I was under the impression that Poulouriscaig was early 1800s as well. However, this map from the 1700s shows it there as a settlement. Very interesting indeed.
Fascinating as usual

Good day fellow Mackay clansman! Would you be so kind to share with me the music piece in this video at 2:00. Manu Forti!
I am sorry, I do not know the name of this music. It was some generic "celtic" music that was added for background. I wish I could be of more help.
no worries mate@@clanmackaysocietyofscotlan1311
As an Aussie, I watch these vids and something about the countryside just screams "home" at me. Even after a couple of generations seperated from the land, it's quite strange.
We say ‘cianalas’ is Gaelic. Home sickness, or nostalgia.
No
We found it at the mouth of the Kyle of Tongue, where the Kinloch River ends.
Thank you@@clanmackaysocietyofscotlan1311
I've been wanting to explore into my family origins, thx for making the video.
Very cool to see the weaving. Could you cover the symbol that is on the Mackay Country monuments throughout Mackay country?
That is a great question. Are you referring to the swans embraced, encircled by a knot design? If so, I am not entirely sure. However, I can say that the Farr Stone (about 700 AD), situated in the churchyard of the Strathnaver Museum near Bettyhill has two swans embracing very similar to the stone tablets at the four corners of Mackay Country. It is possible that when they put those stones up they put the swans as a nod to the Farr Stone.
Yes, the encircled swans. Thank you for your hypothesis!
I am related to the Morgan clan in the north of Scotland . I would like to know more of my ancient family. How would I go about this?
Eyup lads
My family are Mackay My great grandpa gave me our family kilt.
