  • Today, Chris gives us wonderful insight into the Mackays of Galloway and the different branches of the septs. We have the McGhies of Balmaghie and the McKies of Larg. Check out the video to see how our clan aided King Robert the Bruce during the Scottish Wars of Independence.

    My most recent connections to Clan MacKay are not only the Williamsons and Allens/Allans, but the McKies of Balmaghie of Galloway. In particular, I'm related to a Grissel McKie. One of the reasons why the McKies sort of fell apart, was because they did not have enough sons to carry on with the family. But that is really cool to know that story of the McKies and their skill with the bow and arrow and their assistance with Robert The Bruce. I knew they had assisted him, but just did not know exactly how. Now I know, thanks to this video! Another great video! Keep em' coming!

      Certainly is! Btw, I just came back from spending two weeks in Scotland. My friend Calum MacKay and his father George, were kind enough to drive me around Caithness and Sutherland. Very remote up there, but stunningly beautiful. We drove from Bettyhill, down to Strathnaver. We got out and walked around the River Naver and walked across the cable bridge that goes across there. It was quite surreal to be up in those parts. Hopefully, you can visit up there one day.

    Excellent video. The Mackie heraldry is indeed interesting and by all accounts, you nailed it. I also feel that the lion emblazoned as it is signifies the royal connection. I have been doing my own research into my family name Mack and the surname's connection to either MacKay or Mackie. There are various ancient spellings of Mack such as Makke, Make, Macky, Macke, and Mackie. These spellings can be found mostly in the borders region including north to Fife.

    Another interesting note: the family Hubble (Hubbell) also has three leopard heads as their blazon.

    I read that the McKays of southern Scotland are connected to clan Davidson rather than the McKays of the north.

    My great grandmother was born Oct. 29, 1894 in Ayr, Scotland to Edward and Marion McKie. One brother Ingie McKie, sister Nan McKIe. 4 brothers and 2 sisters preceded her in death. Her and twin, Grace came to Canada about 1919 The remaining family was going to come, but WWI broke out and they never got to America I've been doing some digging into my lineage and that's all I got so far is this the same family? Any information is helpful

      Very well could be! This channel is dedicated to the Clan Mackay overall, and we do not get into individual families in detail. There are hundreds of thousands of families that have branched from those who claimed connection with the Mackays so it is very likely this is what you are looking for!

    I love the raven story. But the 3 lions/leopards... - thought its 3 bears in the McKay coat of arms? Misterious.

    Could the name McCoy derive from Mackay in Galloway?

    • @clanmackaysocietyofscotlan1311
      @clanmackaysocietyofscotlan1311  Před rokem +2

      I am not sure if McCoy comes from Galloway or more north in Sutherland, but I am fairly confident that the name McCoy is closely connected with Mackay.

      @@clanmackaysocietyofscotlan1311 Thank you. I'm looking at some genetic connections between some probable Galloway families and several close McCoy lineages and was curious how much significance I should put on that.

      I think McCoy is the way it was written down in Ireland because back then the bishops just wrote it down the way it sounded to them.
