How Does It Feel - Roy Harper (cover + guitar tutorial)

- How Does It Feel is the 2nd big song from Flat Baroque And Berserk and a Roy Harper classic in its own right.
This song falls somewhere in between White Man and Goodbye, not only on the album's tracklist, but also on the anger/passion scale. It is as if Roy's bitterness gradually cools down throughout side one, setting the tone for the gentler side two.
I think Roy's performance of this song on the album is simply astonishing. There are a number of live versions available on CZcams and live albums and IMHO I don't think they match the intensity of the original.
This is another re-make of one of my first Roy Harper guitar tutorials, now removed. This time I decided to tackle the full cover of the song and as usual you get some guitar talk, some clumsy video editing and a hopefully more detailed tutorial. The guitar part is quite simple once you realize that it is in open-D tuning (DADF#AD). - Hudba
You little bugger. I've been playing this in DADGAD for ages.
Your version is spot on....again.
Many thanks....again.
Dear Bad Speech, your work here is amazing! You not only love Roy Harper, but you feel his music, and are kind enough to pass it on to others, like myself, who cannot work things out as accurately as you... To add to that, you are a fine teacher and a fine human being - I'm amazed that you've never met Roy, and urge you to contact him. If he saw these videos he would be as impressed as the rest of us, keep up the fantastic work... An Englishman in Bangkok.
+TheHammerman66 Thanks mate, you are too kind. I've thought of contacting Roy but never got to it. Last year I started writing an e-mail. I wrote it carefully and patiently over the course of a couple of weeks and then threw it away. Maybe when I feel that my work is done I will feel confident to contact him.
+BadSpeech It's amazing that you write to me on this day, as a good friend of mine (that I recently met again after a break of two decades!) has just written to say that he has been diagnosed with terminal cancer. Do not leave writing to Roy for too long; none of us get younger and who knows what is around the corner. Your work keeping Roy's music alive is a wonderful homage; he could not fail to be impressed and touched by your catalogue of work... If you do not write to him soon, I shall to tell him all about you! :) Keep up the fantastic work.
+TheHammerman66 Ouch. That's something to think about. I am sure I will end up writing him someday soon.
THANKYOU THANKYOU - I have been playing this in the WRONG tuning for the last 30 years!!!!!!!
further proof of the primacy of FB&B as Roy's best,,,love Stromcock as i do...but i am an acoustichead AND a Harperhead...thanky again Joao,,,any there many Roy fans in Lisbon?
Thanks BS! Just the right song for the day I've been suffering. Love the way Roy and music in general takes you above the diurnal trivialities!
Just come across thanks to the inexplicable algorithms of CZcams. I closed my eyes and it was Roy himself singing.
Thank you. Those are very kind words :)
This channel is simply amazing; thanks so much!
Thank you. :)
You do these so well.
You’ve made my day my friend thank you
Thank you so much
The Roy Harper original is one of the most beautifully expressed songs I've ever heard and you do more than do it justice. Thank you and well done!
+marcus trueman Totally agree on the expression thing. And thank you for the thumbs up.
Another one you've taught me. Fantastic. Thanks!
You are welcome :)
And this was the one I'd been waiting for, so let me be the first to say thanks, cheers, live forever and really well done. Could you hear me singing along? I'm sure my neighbours could. And it's such a great song to sing, I always enjoy it, even if I can't hit the all the high notes any more. The chorus (middle eight, if you prefer) is one of my favourite Roy chord progressions ever. Obrigado to the nth degree, João. I can't tell you how much your efforts are cheering me up. Mahalo, man!
Well done, this is such a great song, you’ve done a fab job. And open tuning is the best.
Thank you. One of Roy's many great songs, recently featured on Handmaid's Tale
I have seen this late. Excellent work.
Thank you.
my favorite song of roy harper well done
Thanks
MAN, Thanks alot. You're awesome.
Thanks. You're welcome
keep 'em coming BadSpeech,I've spent years and years working on Roys' music, it nice to hear you and see how you work out those tricky bits. -peace and music friend
Thanks mate. I will try to keep this channel alive.
Thank you so much. I never met Roy not been to any of his concerts. Maybe one day I will contact him and ask him to explain a few mysteries.
I have just come across your YT channel, and I would like to say a " Big Well done " and a " BIG Thank You " very much. You have made a lot of people very happy with your teaching and working out of the chords to Roy's songs. :)
Thank You. (Stevie J..U.K.)
+stevie joanes Thank you so much. It's been a work of heart :)
Great tutorial, keep it up!
Thanks!
Nice job man...now subscribed!
Thank you
Great tone on that guitar. And I think you nailed it on the chords.
Thanks mate. And you can trust me on those chords :)
Thanks Levin. The FB&B songbook is now complete. In time, maybe I will re-work a couple more.
one of roys best ex job mate you deserve a gig with roy id pay to c that
LOL I would be happy to have the chance to sit with him for 5 minutes.
And thank you so much for the round of encouraging comments
Time Is Temporary is definitely mellow. I think it suits his 72 years old. I hope the album is as good.
Very cool...
Thank you
You are welcome. There is footage of Roy playing this one so this is quite reliable.
Voce e incrive, my good friend. You are such a treasure, really. Obviously you, like many of us, are obsessed with Roy Harper and we are enough to benefit from your expertise . Just playing the music in this open D tuning is so much for some of us who cannot sing so high. Keep it up . By the way, does Roy Harper know about you and have you met the guy?.
great stuff again my friend...
Thanks mate.
no thank u...
ok then ;)
Thank you jack. You are welcome.
Bad Speech... Nice one... I play "White Man & Tom Tiddlers Ground".... I like how you play. Thanks for the video.....
Thank you. I play those too.
That was great. Really great. Heard this song while watching The Handmaid’s Tale. Margret Atwood is a remarkable woman and I have no doubt that she had input into the soundtrack because she was politically astute. Great job. Hope you’re still playing. 💜🎤💜
Thank you. It was great to have this at the end of that Handmaid's Tale episode. Still playing this song quite a bit. It's a good one to play live.
BadSpeech ~ Awe. That’s great, man! I’m so happy that you’re still doing your thing. Best of luck to you!
💜
Great!!!!!!!
Thanks Mike :)
I know you're not as much a fan of his later albums, and it's harder figure out what he's doing because of all the effects he uses, but is there any chance of doing Waiting For Godot? It's a favorite of mine and there's no footage or anything of him playing it...just the album versiom as far as I'm aware...
Thank you MrDazvid
It's not on my plans to do a video on Godot but I can take a look at it and send you the chords. Can't promise when. My instinct points to standard tuning but tuned down one tone or two as usual at this point. Cheers!
If you come to Lisbon in September I will gladly have a beer with another Harperhead.
Always loved this album. Sounds good. What's the tuning?
Open-D
Great video thanks. Can you demonstrate the strumming pattern please.
Just follow your instinct. That's what I do.
Exactly what Brandon Howells said lol. ❤️
Posted in 2013 😀.
...and the angry Roy has well mellowed out these days; but, still questioning the human situation on this planet we are all in...
Mr.. You are shit hot when it comes to covering roy harper songs. 👍
Thanks mate
Roy's fans in Lisbon? Very few, I would guess...
