This is one of an ongoing series of electronic artworks that I started 40 years ago. I define a "Numeric Relevator" as a "device designed to create irrelevant numeric information". I make these in an effort to satirize the implicit trust we have when confronted by a device like a calculator or gas pump that displays numbers. It's inconceivable that these machines could be wrong, so my sculptures deliberately generate and display irrelevant and silly numbers and other artifacts.
I started working on this particular piece in 2016 and abandoned it because the code kept crashing after several hours. (Each of the 10 displays has its own firmware). Recently I have been mentoring a guy named Sam in his gap year before he heads off to college and after teaching him many skills including woodworking, metalworking etc. I decided to ask him to help me finish this piece. He had never written code before but jumped right in and after a few hours we not only got it working but he came up with some really fun ideas to improve it. So his signature is on the bottom along with my own.

Beautiful work. I just enjoy the beauty of the displays themselves, especially seeing them in an artful context.
