"Discrimination only lasts until you open your mouth." As someone who frequently gets initially judged poorly, I can strongly attest to this. I absolutely adore when some stranger talks down to me and is dismissive, is even rude, bordering on insulting and then a little later asks what college I went to. I love the look of consternation on their face when I tell them I didn't go to college, I just have always read a lot, then ask what books are they reading and they have to search their memory for the last time they've read a book which may have been years ago.
Knowledge and intelligence can't be faked and it can't be much covered over, either. So if you're an ignorant ass and people don't like you, don't blame it on your color, own it, you're an ignorant ass, do better.

I agree with your sentiments and statements, but whilst reading this bit:
"I absolutely adore when some stranger talks down to me and is dismissive, is even rude, bordering on insulting "
my first thought was "he seems kind of masochistic, and perhaps has a shaming kink going on..."
You redeemed yourself a few more words into things, however.
Personally, I have a similar background in some ways, though I did take a lot of college courses. I won't bore you unless you respond and want to know.
It is an error to confuse education and schooling. Often the latter closes ones mind to the former. ANyone who has deep dived into the work of John Taylor Gatto and examined his source materials and references can attest to that.

I think the decline in OD's is due to something practical - the easy availability and distribution of Nalaxone, the opiate OD reversal drug, to the public. Many cities and states have made it easy to get and more families and addict groups have wisely chosen to keep it on hand when they know OD is a possibility.

Free will: just because your brain has natural tendencies, doesn't imply you don't have free will.
Choice is meaningless and powerless without a context. You can choose to fly but only in the context of some invention capable of flight. Just because you're limited to a context doesn't mean you have no free will. It just means that free will must be limited to be possessed.

Dick Bong's P80 primary fuel pump malfunctioned during takeoff. Bong did not switch to the auxiliary fuel pump, either forgetting or unable to do so. He ejected, but was too low for his parachute to open. The plane crashed into a narrow field at Oxnard Street and Satsuma Avenue, North Hollywood. His death was front-page news across the country, sharing space with the first news of the bombing of Hiroshima.

I have loved reading your books and comics since the 1990s though I go extended periods being inattentive owing to life demands. Mostly I have missed your podcasts but have been catching up on some with the youtubes. I don't watch them live for two reasons...I live expat in a very different time zone AND because I watch most youtube content at 1.5x speed as I am impatient and most people speak too slowly for me. Five minutes in to this video I laughed out loud to myself at your "third place" dog park idea. It's not that I think it is stupid. Ever since I joined the military at 17, I have been a big proponent of Murphy's Laws of Combat (it's a real thing), and lived by them. My favourite is "If it's stupid, but works, it isn't stupid.". No, what made me laugh is the typical dank thoughts and meme inspiration that zips through my head serendipitously (or perhaps nefariously) via inadvertent congruences.
You see, your idea of "places where people accidentally meet" is great. This USED to be life in general, when people left their homes and weren't staring at screens all of the time. There were always unexpected encounters, but these happened with some frequency at nexus points...the local hardware store, the school drop off, the local coffee shop or hobby shop, the local mall, etc.
The key was LOCAL. It's possible in tight knit old school neighbourhoods (it used to be), with active churches and parishes in cities, but it's harder now because social capital has collapsed with diversity and the population growth and sprawl that accompanied these things. I could turn this into an essay on such but I probably wouldn't tell you anything you don't already know. In any case, when it comes to chance encounters and accidental meetings, in a dog park, I also thought of "random dog fights...come for the people, stay for the pit bull vs chihuahua action." I know, it is a long way to go to type a one liner, but I wanted to guide you to how I got there a little without just seeming like a dark thought asshat who sees the evil side of everything. That does describe me ever since I became a combat arms veteran...and some years before that too so I suppose that's just me, but five minutes in you had me intrigued and then laughing out loud, so I have high expectations for the rest of your stream, which I will go watch now.

At the very end, Scott goes off the rails, without historical perspective.
China was a collection of feuding countries until Qin conquered a number of them in 221 BC and made up the name “emperor” for himself. It wasn’t until two millennia later, in 1683, China looked over the horizon and grabbed Taiwan.
Japan took Taiwan from China in 1895. Taiwan gained its independence after WW2.
The totalitarian PRC regime has NO legitimate claim to Taiwan.
Here’s what’s really going on. PRC is utterly lost. Only a third of the land has enough water to be arable.
Xi must import food. For that he can only pay in low-quality goods. Workers who make those cheap goods are aging and increasing his burdens. Xi also must import energy. Does anyone here care to play Xi's hand?! That's why he makes noise about the shining example across the Strait.
He needs DISTRACTIONS and nationalist fervor to hide his failings!
Xi is not about to do anything risky. Foreign adventurism is alien to the culture.

Bong died years later as a test pilot, testing jet planes early in their development. He was a Medal of Honor recipient, and held the record for the most kills as an ace, having shot down more enemy planes than even the famous Eddie Rickenbacker of WWI.

Both Cuba and Venezuela show that Scott has a wrong view of this. Our example shows that clearly Taiwan could survive independently from China for a long, long time.

  • @BB-gj8ck
    @BB-gj8ck Před 23 dny +2

Scott always mentions how free will doesn’t exist. His framing isn’t correct. It’s unlikely a binary question.
The fact he gave the strategy to recenter yourself a few days ago by saying “back to reality” or whatever the saying is, shows he doesn’t fully believe in determinism. Remembering a strategy and applying it shows deliberation and execution aren’t totally determined.
There is a middle ground to the freewill question, which is a blind spot.
It’s like saying “I’m totally republicans” or “I’m totally democrats”. The reality is most people are on a continuum. Just as the abortion issue isn’t a binary question when you break it down. Most people support early abortion, but oppose late term.

Modern man has existed for about a million years and alcohol has been used for only a couple thousand years , not enough time for an alcohol addiction gene to arise from a random mutation plus natural selection.

It's not so much alcohol specifically as a general tendency for substance abuse; fentanyl is just different because it kills so quickly.

We actually don't know any of that. The assumptions with millions of years require chains of conjecture, built on other conjectures. I don't think there is any such thing as an "addiction gene", but simple propensities toward behaviour as well as epigenetics. For those of a religious bent, you can see some congruence when you consider notions of demonic harassment (temptations) and the sins of the father being visited unto the seventh generation (a scriptural description of epigenetics). Be very very wary on making any judgements based on "science" that starts by quoting evolution. I am not a religious man in any particular way, though I was educated by Jesuits, most of whom were scientists of some kind or another. When I delved into issues like evolution with an open mind in the years subsequent to my education, I realized it was all bullshit, and so are many of the fables preached to us in the name of scientism. Genetic determinism is the latest version of "the devil made me do it" to dodge personal responsibility and accountability.

@@chrislastnam6822 First, bullshit, because none of the people teaching evolution have that background, especially in high school and mostly in university.
Second, bullshit because none of the people who advanced, or created the notion of evolution had that background either.
Third, define "study". By that, I guess you mean take courses that teach the approved knowledge and accepted narratives and paradigms and learn to regurgitate what they say.
You should read Kuhn's work on the nature of scientific revolutions. I can have an opinion on evolution, and more than that, I have an INFORMED opinion. Interspecies evolution is bullshit.
Systems logic and irreducible complexity and the absence of ANY transition fossils, not to mention the fact that hoax after hoax has been perpetrated in the field, with no loss of credibility to the theory's adherents, or enthusiasm amongst the priests of Darwin, has resulted. That argues for the flaws in the theory. It remains a theory. In a spectacular example of the Dunning Kruger effect, Darwin assumed cells were largely generic protoplasm things because the instruments to examine them, the understanding of genetics, just didn't exist.
He came up with a theory which seemed plausible until one understands things such as the simplest cell being more complicated than the most complicated machine humanity has invented to date, let alone in Darwin's age. His theory was plausible without understanding how complex the human eye actually is, and how every bit of it is useless and couldn't have developed or been useful without corresponding neural circuitry and chemical mechanisms linking brain and the eye with translation software.
The hoaxes say so much about the field and its integrity. It is a religion, a dogma, and article of faith.
In fact, more than a century after Haeckel's drawings were proven and ADMITTED to be a hoax, they continue to be included in biology texts taught in school. They were in my schools in the 1980s, they remain in the texts of people I knew who were in high school in 2015. They were not using 100 year old texts, but texts published only a few years in advance.
I was told I needed to study engineering at university to be an engineer after I left the military. I was told that I needed to have pre-requisites and a formal grounding in myriad subjects with a checklist. That was all bullshit. I was busy and had no academic background in it (though I had an academic background and two unrelated majors). I did NOT study university, I taught myself while doing it. In less time than most people take to get a degree in engineering I had taught myself enough to be a field engineer, then systems, and then design engineer in several disciplines. Within a few years after that, I was doing R&D and was recruited into a DARPA project as an engineer.
Don't tell me what I need to know how to use my brain. You should try it some time.
