As someone who has lived in LA for over 30 years… when you’re out there driving on the road, it’s hard to know who’s involved in a police chase and who’s not, since everyone in California speeds down the street
Not sure what area you’ve been in, but as a native Angeleno that has been here for 26 years and going, that’s half-true. Everyone normally drives 5 above the limit on the streets. If the limit is 40, everyone will is driving 43-45. There are speedsters that will do 50+ but they aren’t as common. Now the freeways are a different story. Everyone drives above the limit on the freeways when there’s no clogged traffic, 80+ stay in the express lanes.

The Howe twins of Howe and Howe Tech that built the Ripsaw also built a harpoon for their autonomous/remote controlled Ripsaw that was mounted in the front so if they needed to drag cars off the road that were either blocking their route or contained a possible IED they could ram it with the Ripsaw and deploy the harpoon and drag it outta the way.

8:39 theres a concept for a wheel catcher that can be mounted on the front of an SUV, basically 2 forklift style forks mounted on the grill fold down in front with some kevlar straps between them, the police driver would then ram the back corner of the pursued vehicle to get the rear wheel caught in the straps, they tangle up and the kevlar spools out to a slightly longer length keeping the cars about 1-2 car lengths from each other. once thats done the SUV slams on the breaks to bring the 2 to a stop in a much more controlled way than a pit maneuver
9:47 As soon as Charlie started talking about the sniper shot and the intersection overlay came up it looked like it was showing the sniper's aim compensating for wind and distance
The fact that people got scared about him opening fire into the kids even though it didn’t happen (and probably was never his intention) shows how much of a gun problem the US has. We are completely traumatized
I live in LA. This Does happen pretty frequently. My dad is a retired Sheriffs sergeant of 27+ years. God Bless the men & women that serve/risk their lives for us Every Single Day. 💙🖤💙🖤💙
Some extra tidbits for anyone curious: The gun the carjacker used looked like sort of semi-automatic rifle; it looked like it could have even been a hunting rifle (but it's honestly really hard to make out the shape) Also the rounds being fired into his windshield the second time were likely 7.62 or .338 or in other words pretty big rounds that would have caused pretty unpleasant things to happen if they had hit directly. More likely any erratic driving from him would have been caused by a fine mist of shattered glass taking up residency in his eyes and lungs. P.S. I decided to look more into this and apparently the guy "was injured by gunfire." Must have been a grazing shot or something like that. In any case guy is incredibly lucky to be alive.

1:21 if it is really a full auto machine gun, but in the shape of an assault rifle, then it’s most likely a stoner 63. Made as a support weapon like the BAR M1918, it was used in Vietnam and other war’s following it

LA Car Chases have been a TV spectator event since OJ’s Bronco in the 90s. It hasn’t changed, just the medium through which you’re watching them and the improvement in chase cam tech.
As others have said, the moment near the school kids was heart stopping. The absolute dread in the reporter's voice and the way you could hear him pleading for him to just keep going... man. That guy could have opened fire and made it a huge tragedy, or just blown straight through them.

The fact that Charlie has to be careful about ToS moments while watching a CZcams video is insane. It's already on CZcams.
It's from his stream on twitch
he had to be careful bc twitch is more strict abt this stuff, not youtube

Charlie, L.A. is the car chase capital. Theyve been showing them live on TV forever. 20 years ago I lived there and there was one on TV seemingly every week. I remember a guy stole a soda delivery truck just to be in a televised car chase. Had another one blow right by me as I was walking home from the train station.
the part where he's genuinely laughing over the 'wild hog wrangling' keeps making my day cant stop replaying it
As someone who has lived in LA for over 30 years… when you’re out there driving on the road, it’s hard to know who’s involved in a police chase and who’s not, since everyone in California speeds down the street
To be fair, there's also too many of you driving 15 below the posted speed limit. I'll take the speeders
Here they speed like 40 over then tailgate ur ass even when you are already going like 10 over and arent in a fast lane
Mexicans
Not sure what area you’ve been in, but as a native Angeleno that has been here for 26 years and going, that’s half-true. Everyone normally drives 5 above the limit on the streets. If the limit is 40, everyone will is driving 43-45. There are speedsters that will do 50+ but they aren’t as common. Now the freeways are a different story. Everyone drives above the limit on the freeways when there’s no clogged traffic, 80+ stay in the express lanes.

@@mooplesquamp2783 considering the stuff he just did it shows he has a tiny amount of reason/empathy
I was thinking about that when it happened maybe he ran out of ammo or jammed the gun? Or he might have been trying to decide whether or not to shoot at them because there are multiple times where he could've just went through without hitting

Did this dude actually have a machine gun? I doubt it. He probably just had a regular rifle.
One day, Charlie is gonna be in a car chase while reacting to himself
🤣
And Chris will be there to report it 😮💨
I can just imagine Charlie deciding to go to L.A just so he can go on a high speed pursuit with the CHP and for Chris to narrate the whole thing.
The whole time he's talking about how people like him don't think and calling himself a moron.
Good to see bots haven't flooded my comment
I was watching this live with my dad and when he got to the school with all the kids walking home we were panicking so unbelievably hard, thankfully he didn't do anything to the kids.
This was my thought. Honestly, I'm so glad that whatever small spark of morality was still within him kept him from taking a hostage or just outright going on a murder spree.
He definitely was bad, but at least he wasn't evil.
A real "Even Evil Has Standards" moment.
I was fast forwarding and stopped at the right moment. Silence, then “open my tackle box!” 😂 😂😂😂

8:39 theres a concept for a wheel catcher that can be mounted on the front of an SUV,
basically 2 forklift style forks mounted on the grill fold down in front with some kevlar straps between them, the police driver would then ram the back corner of the pursued vehicle to get the rear wheel caught in the straps, they tangle up and the kevlar spools out to a slightly longer length keeping the cars about 1-2 car lengths from each other.
once thats done the SUV slams on the breaks to bring the 2 to a stop in a much more controlled way than a pit maneuver
Chris' high quality commentary makes my day

Grandma needs her daily dose of adrenaline.
The utter fear I had watching this and seeing him creeping past the kids, that could have gone south so fucking quick
Every time there is a big chase, his phone rings from ABC7 News & he talks w/ them about what’s going on/what the police could possibly do to stop the threat.
God Bless the men & women that serve/risk their lives for us Every Single Day. 💙🖤💙🖤💙
Some extra tidbits for anyone curious:
The gun the carjacker used looked like sort of semi-automatic rifle; it looked like it could have even been a hunting rifle (but it's honestly really hard to make out the shape)
Also the rounds being fired into his windshield the second time were likely 7.62 or .338 or in other words pretty big rounds that would have caused pretty unpleasant things to happen if they had hit directly.
Look at that last kid who fall behind from the group at 7:49,it was like in a horror movie timing,so glad they are all fine..

gonna nerd out rq: there is actually a system called the grappler that AZDPS uses, its a big net on the front of a rambar that extends forward when needed, and it grabs the rear tire, and its attached to a rope on the cruiser, and the cruiser can then slow them down until he stops. in most situations it is much safer than a PIT maneuver cause less crossfire, and less damage to both vehicles (cruiser and suspect's)
