    I might suggest a 'Clamping Diode' across the coil of the relay. The Cathode of the diode, (Marked end) corresponding with the positive lead of your power supply. When the relay is de-energized, a voltage 'spike' from the coil can travel back into your PSU, and if there is an unprotected IC it can be damaged. No 'Big Deal', just something to keep in mind. .... Enjoyed your vid, ... Well done Mate.

    Thank you for such a great and simple idea. I used the exact same relay and an iDevices switch instead of the Wemo and an old 12vdc transformer I had lying around. Instead of pressing twice to simulate a push button I set up an Apple HomeKit automation to turn off the IiDevices switch immediately after getting the pulse to set the door in motion. Works with Siri as well. For remote monitoring I set up an Elgato Eve window and door sensor so I can see if I had forgotten to close the door and do it remotely. Thanks again for the relay idea, I was looking at much costlier options!

    That can be a handy device for some things, but if you can't tell if the door is open or closed remotely, it is not a very good idea for a garage door opener. There are other products that are made for garage door openers that monitor if it is open or closed.

    Nice video on your setup. Just wanted to add that there's an app available called WemoRemote/WemoManager that can replace the official Wemo app and give you some additional functionality with your Wemo devices. Specific to this case is the ability to add a rule that can automatically turn off your Wemo switch a few seconds after it is turned on, so you'd eliminate having to toggle the switch a second time to shut off the relay.

    Firstly, awesome video. Easy to follow. Have been looking to achieve something similar and was looking for option. I was able to get the exact setup done except using TP-LINK Smart Plug. However, I noticed when Garage Door is activated via Phone App, I have to press the button twice a.k.a. Pressing once it opens the Garage Door but the lamp blinks error until I press it again. I suspect the relay switch gets energized but does not come back to the original open position - less behaving like "push button" manual wall switch. Thoughts???

    • @dial2fast

      +Francesco Chiarelli Yes I have played around with the IFTTT DO app, but very disspointing. Response can be very slow and you get no acknowledgement whether the switch actually got switched. Even the text notification from IFTTT sometimes can take an hour. Not reliable enough to be used for something as important as you house garage.

    I have been thinking about doing something similar but you need something automatic that will only turn on for like 1 second then back off so there is no problem because if someone is not paying attention and never turns it back off then the wall button does not work

  • @ChristianLanctot

    A few flaws with this. It just toggles the relay. And you have to press the button twice on the wemo app. There's no way to know if the garage door is open or closed. Also, you can't program Wemo rules like :"Close garage door at midnight" because it doesn't know the difference in the status of the garage door.
    As for google home, you can always program a "Toggle garage door" routine which will turn the wemo on, count to 5 and then turn the wemo off. But as I said before: You still don't know if the garage door is open or closed before you invoke the routine.
    What you need to do is very similar to this but add a reed switch (magnetic switch) to the garage door itself. So the switch itself is anchored to a wall, likely over the garage door, and a magnet is anchored to the door itself. So when the garage door itself is closed, the switch is closed. When the garage door is open, the switch is open.
    The trick is to get the logic right: Wemo turned to on, opens the garage door. Wemo turned to off, closes the garage door. I'm currently working on a solution for this. I'm using Wemo minis. I'm consulting with electronics experts on how to pull this off. So far I do have a solution but it requires 2 power sources. That's ok since the plug in my ceiling has 2 X 120VAC plugs. One plug will have a regular 120VAC to 12VDC adapter which powers the trigger for the opener's terminals. The other plug will have a wemo mini with another 120VAC to 12VDC and an simple circuit with a relay, just like the one shown in this video. The relay will close a switch in the 1st circuit mentioned above which when combined with the reed switch will do the appropriate action. Wemo on = open garage door, wemo off = close garage door.
    I'll post my own video once I figure it out.

    Don't do this on modern Chamberlain/Liftmaster openers! They have a device available for about $60, it allows you to open and close, but also tell you if the garage door is open, i.e. you left the house and don't remember if the door was left open or closed.

    This may be a dumb question but I'll ask it anyway. Is the relay required? I understand that it flips from off to one with a 12v charge but aren't you essentially doing the same thing just by turning the WeMo on and right back off?

    • @dial2fast

  • @brit1066
    @brit1066 Před 6 lety +1

    NOTE, this will NOT WORK with newer garage door openers.
    If your opener wall switch ALSO operates the light on the door operator THIS WILL NOT WORK.
    This is because the switch does NOT work by just shorting the two wires together. Newer wall switches send a signal to the door operator telling it to just open the door OR turn the light on.
    To get this to work you have to open the wall switch and locate the tiny mechanical switch inside. Then you must solder 2 wires to the contacts of the switch and attach those wires to your WifFi switch.
    The WiFi switch itself MUST be what is known as a MOMENTARY OR INCHING relay.
    Get this WiFi switch from Banggood for about $8 is is a SONOFF switch and they work VERY WELL indeed.
    This Momentary or Inching switch provides just a PULSE of power to the wall switch unlike the regular switches which just toggel from ON to OFF.

    • @hungpatrick2035
      @hungpatrick2035 Před 6 lety

      It works with newer garage door openers, but needs to press twice in order to turn off the Wifi switch every time, but the jog mode Wifi Switch Sonoff can do and solve this problem.

    • @brit1066
      @brit1066 Před 6 lety

      Hung Patrick But if you forget the second switch push it will continue to go up and down because the opener is getting a continual signal to keep going.
      The other problem with newer wall switches is that just shorting the wires together DOES NOT WORK.
      WITH NEWER WALL SWITCHES just pushing the button operates an internal switch that tells the electronics INSIDE THE WALL SWITCH to send a signal to the door operator. It is that INTERNAL SWITCH that must be activated.
      This is not difficult, but you must open up the wall switch and solder two wires to that physical internal switch.
      These wires then go to the NORMALLY OPEN connections of the WiFi switch relay, when you activate the WiFi switch it shorts those two wires together which is the equivalent of pressing the wall switch with your fingers.
      This works PERFECTLY as I can attest to. It is VERY SIMPLE and takes only a few minutes to do.
      However you do need to competent with SOLDERING AND BASIC ELECTRICAL AND ELECTRONIC CIRCUIT THEORY.
      I used the SONOFF inching switch.
      I have found SONOFF switches to be extremely good and reliable and INEXPENSIVE.
      Several times while using the EWELINK APP I have received a notification that the WiFi switch firmware has an update available. So far the update process has been FLAWLESS and completely automatic.

    • @hungpatrick2035
      @hungpatrick2035 Před 6 lety

      Thanks. You are right. I understood . So I, did solder two wires from the button contact to connect the relay. in fact, I have one with Jog mode but will be replaced later.

    • @brit1066
      @brit1066 Před 6 lety

      Hung Patrick My only concern is security, what if you accidentally trigger the door opener while you are not home.
      So I sent an email to customer srvc. suggesting that you should be able to require a password on certain switches.
      They responded very quickly saying that my suggestion would be forwarded to the development team.
      As it is I have a cheap WiFi camera in the garage so I can look to see if the door is open. Another solution is to have a door sensor that will send a message if the door opens.
      Isn’t this fun?

    So excuse my ignorance but I've got a question: Why can't I just replace the garage opener wall switch with a wemo light switch like this www.amazon.com/dp/B00DGEGJ02/ref=wl_it_dp_o_pC_nS_ttl?_encoding=UTF8&colid=1WGWY3AHASJBU&coliid=IL5IFZW1IVABJ&psc=1 ?

      +Emeka Obianyor Because that light switch controls 120VAC device. Your garage door opener button is a low voltage DC switch.

    LAWSUIT WARNING: While it is easy to do this the problem is that it’s unsafe and does not meet US federal or UL safety standards! In layman’s terms, people can get smashed by closing garage doors remotely.
    UL 325 was revised in 2009 allowing unattended operation features. UL requirements for a residential garage door operator to be enabled for remote operation from a smart phone, tablet or other portable devices state that several key provisions be met:
    1. The feature must be utilized only on an operator equipped with a secondary entrapment protection system such as a photoelectric sensor.
    2. The feature must be activated only when the operator is installed on a sectional door.
    3. The operator must be equipped with an audible and visual warning system indicating a pending motion for 5 seconds before the door starts moving.

      If the opener is fairly recent it will have at least dual safety systems. Beam break detectors and if properly calibrated an absolute minimum close force reversal system which will reverse a closing door if the pressure is even slightly more than required.

      Ah, that explains why people in videos are installing a flashing light. Seemed excessive but not now thanks to your explanation.

      Guyfromhe, the second device is a power load monitor, l believe, that sends signal if motor stresses when it encounters resistance. Don't know the particular device name.
