When I was a young man, I did high work in the shipyards. I built scaffolding on ship's masts at over 180 feet up w/o any kind of harness. It was the early '80s, safety wasn't a thing. I couldn't even go up there now, let alone build anything. I'd freeze.
Highest point of the paper mill with harness foreman holding my ankles. Had to measure pipe under a grated platform. He had to grab my ankles to push me as I folded myself to reach, then pull me back around when I was done. I miss the work and the ability to work like that.
Yeah, I don’t know how my dad survived construction in the 60’s-80’s. The stories he told me of working on huge buildings with basically no safety equipment were terrifying. He also got a piece of a nail through his pupil and almost lost an eye. Back before eye protection was required of course.
I did a somewhat similar job. Open fill foam insulation on mortor block buildings. Stuff was like shaving cream, was like Styrofoam when it dried. R21 value. Foam truck: 3 55g drums of water and stuff that looked like liquid tide. 3 55g drums of amino fiam plast resin. Nasty stuff. Air compress with an attachment that combine both sides and with compressed air. Some very nasty shaving cream! Fill one section at a top. They build up a 2 floors, we fill from the top down via a hose with conduct wand to reach down inside. A lot of time no scaffolding on either side, no safety harness....if u fell, u were 💀 . Mid-late 80's. Best employer and job I've ever had. Good times. Thank you so much Jim of Miamasburg, you were great to work for. Hope retirement is treating you well.

That's pretty good, the US won 40 (26 from women) gold medals (67 of our 126 total for the 2024 was from women) so I think that's pretty balanced all in all since you can't expect a perfect split between the two. Australia might have had a chance to get more if what I'm hearing about the female breakdancer scandal is true. She allegedly had help from her husband and friends/family to head the committee and judges since no one else took charge and blocked actually talented people from attending so they could go.
The fact that you didn't have SOME kind of protection against a freak slip or even cramp that could've easily sent you into a barrel roll right over the edge... Insane! No amount of money or even respect from peers is worth your life from an avoidable accident! Have an emergency chute, or outer walls on this platform or for god sake wear a retractable harness with someone on the other end ready to push the button and taut the line! think its possible for you. My local dive tower is "only" 5m tal, plenty of people in their 60s do it. There's one guy in particular does v elaborate dives and flips to the, eh...chagrin of his younger peers. It may well be possible for you to do these things, if you research into it correctly.

Saying she won't let it define her and that she'll use it to learn from, makes me so happy to see so many people spreading encouragement and understanding it's not the end of the world if you mess up.
