  • This edition of Mudmas was filmed in the Summer again. We have delayed putting this film up because we wanted to investigate our amazing find, unfortunately, Covid has had other ideas. It seems perhaps Covid is not going anywhere for some time so we have decided to proceed with the film and promise to investigate when we can! Come and see what the amazing find is and if you can help us read it :)
    Merry Mudmas!
We have a Ko-fi account, so if you wanted to support us by buying us a metaphorical cup of coffee it would be greatly appreciated xx

My grandmother and her siblings lived in Old tovil Rd around the 1920s. My aunt not moving out until she went into a residential home many years later in the late 80's, and they had a friend called Mrs maxted . Don't know if it's the same family but will do some checking and let you know if I find out any more.

The small slate is one of my favorite finds of yours ever. How amazing and personal and potentially very traceable. I love it. To help reveal what is written, try a rubbing just as you would to reveal what is written on an old gravestone. Lots of tips on that through Google. Sometimes oblique lighting works, which is just a matter of finding the right angle with a flashlight (torch to you), best done in a room that is minimally lit so you have contrast. Oh, one more potential tool. Magnification can also sometimes be very useful. A proper magnifying glass or, even better, a loupe and good light. All of the above are non-destructive, so play around with it for what works best. As a general rule, applying anything directly to the item is best avoided. Please let us know, I can’t be the only one curious 😊

My mom used to have a button hoard and she kept them in a tin can. That way we always had a possible match should we loose a button off of our clothes. The orange/red round item might be a knob for a radio (?) instead of a bottle stopper. I used to do slate etching as an art form. When I needed to see scribed marks clearer rubbing talc powder on it brought out the scratched marks clearly. So try putting a generous amount of talc powder on it then wipe off the excess. Maybe even tamp it down lightly before wiping. Baby powder would work nicely but any talc powder that is not plant based should work. The ink will help make the talc powder stand out nicely so do not remove it.

Love the headless vegetarian couple. : ) Glad you rescued them from the muck. You could photograph them with different fresh veggies in place of their heads, such as celery, green onions or some colorful lettuce.. Could be really fun. They look like they have a good sense of humor. Would make for some quirky greeting cards, appropriate for many occasions if blank inside and frameable too. Yes, the button hoard could be someone's button collection. But could it also be because people threw their clothes into that part of the dump? The clothes rotted away and all that was left were the buttons?
