CHEAPO Pruning Shears from Amazon Compared to Quality Felco Shears

  • In this video I put the cheapest pruning shears available on Amazon.com to the test, in a head to head pruning matchup against my high quality Felco F-8. My Felcos have been incredibly durable, accurate, and comfortable to use. Are cheap pruning shears worth it? How did these generic pruning shears compare to high quality Felco pruners ?You can check them out (or others like Corona, etc) for more info on Amazon below.

    I worked as a gardener for over 35 years and I used a cheap set of anvil pruners that I got in my local hardware store. Same with my loppers... anvil with wooden handles. I kept them well-maintained and sharp and if I lost them, I knew that I wouldn't have to mortgage my house to buy a new pair.
    Those were the days before everything was made in China and anything that wasn't cost a fortune. The quality was good and I still have them and use them on my own property now that I'm retired.
    I have a pair of Felco, Stihl and Blue Hawk clippers that I picked up in yard sales over the years. They all work well for me for the price that I paid for them, since I keep them sharp and never use them on branches that would be beyond their capability to handle. Same with the loppers with the wood handles. If the branch is too large for them to handle, I take the time to go get my pruning saw....also bought in the hardware store.

    In 2018 Amazon sold me a pair of Ganchun 8" Bypass Pruning Shears in 2018 for $3.98, with free Prime shipping; at the same time I purchased a pair of expensive ( $36.95) Secateur clippers for my wife, but I much prefer the Ganchun Shears and would buy more for gifts if Amazon still carried them. They were an amazing bargain.

    I have had my felco's for 33 years. they are well worth the investment if you use them regularly. I have had coronas... I wouldn't buy another pair. these are the ones I allow people to borrow. never allow my felcos to leave my possession.

    The great thing about Felcos is that all parts are replaceable. One set, for life. They also carry dozens of models for every application and also carry different sizes to accommodate those whose hand size is larger or smaller to ensure ease of use. I have tiny hands and found that on some cheap brands, I can barely reach the far side of the grips!! That results in hand fatigue, quick. You only get what you pay for definitely applies here!

      almost, they still don't offer dual bladed pruners like the Due Buoi 132/133 or Falket 2010/2020 and let that market to the usual italians pruners makers. 😽

    i'm a gardener and i'm used this felco more then 25 year, it's made in switserland what means high quality, all the parts on a felco you can buye separate (knife- handle....) so you not need buye a complete new pruning shear that safe money

    I bought Felco F-2 pruners this year and love them. Amazon has them listed at $52 right now. My Corona shears I now refer to as my "Dirt shears". I actually use the dirt shears more as I reserve my Felco's for actual tree pruning. Over on Plant Abundance's channel he did a video showing where he received counter-fit pruner when he ordered Felco. Amazon made it right and he shows them side by side, pointing out the differences. Hard to tell apart if you don't know what you are looking for. Stay busy!

      Ouch! spending that kind of money and getting counterfeits is no good! I know what you mean by "dirt shear". I have a set of Coronas and Craftsman that fill this role. Great for cutting out suckers

      Corona shears! I for got that name . Back in the 1990s Corona came out with the first steel tube long handle shears for about $30 dollars . About the high end of the then price range. I was very disappointed when the steel tubes would slide off the tool steel shanks. Yes they had fine precision ground cutting edges but the constance attention of keeping the handles from slipping off rendered then ... not good

    "Pruning Shears" vs Felco is like "Gimbal" (that is visible in shots) vs DJI OM5. LOL. Thanks for the review. I totally relate to contractor quality vs Harbor Freight - sometimes that HF tool is all you need, sometimes you pay extra for the best.

    I usually use my felco's. I bought some smaller ARS for pruning veggies and harvesting fruit. Definitely worth considering these as an slightly cheaper alternative. Have used fiskars and coronas and they're not really worth discussing. I also have a pair of felco loppers. They go through everything like butter. $$$. But...I happen to like premium tools. Most of my pruning saws are also pretty pricey.

    • @TheBusyGardener
      @TheBusyGardener  Před 4 lety

      SERIOUSLY! Quality tools, especially for jobs where they're going to see a lot of use, make life so much easier. I checked out ARS, and they look similarly priced to Felcos. Which ARS pruning shears are you using? I'm curious to check them out!

      @@TheBusyGardener I think I have the 300L-DX version (stainless steel). There's a slightly cheaper carbon steel version (300L) for $20 as well. They're pretty pointy, so you can fit them in much tighter spaces than normal hand pruners.

    I used Felco’s for 13 years as a professional landscaper , they are rock solid absolute best in the industry benchmark, my pair that was well worn was stolen from my truck, I no longer work in the field. but recently for home use I tried the haus and garten brand they have titanium blades. run from 40 to 50 dollars and I have to say i’m impressed. the mechanism you were unsure of is how you take it apart to change blades and tighten it back down. Felcos are definitely the industry standard. and will last a lifetime if there is no thievery. 👍🏻

    I bought a branded clone of the Felco 13. I thought they'd be OK but not as good as Felco. They are in fact bad, really bad. Dimensionally similar but the hardening isn't as good as Felco. The blades separate and the material being cut jams between the blades on about 75% of thinner cuts so I have to swap between them and my Genuine Felco 2 when doing mixed size pruning. It's worth paying for Felcos - they are pleasant to use.
    I have one regret with Felcos, that I didn't buy my dad a pair as a present when he was alive - I never knew about them.

      @TheBusyGardener  Před 4 lety +1

      Yeah, it's amazing how two items can look so similar, yet perform so differently. I like my Felcos! I've got some Corona's on order that I'm going to also try out. I think your obvious love for your dad meant more to him than anything you could have bought him. 🤗

    I actually love my okatsune with 61hrc Rockwell hard Japanese steel you only get this type of hardness in absolut high end knifes. This hardness leads to long lasting sharpness and in my home garden I only sharpen them twice a year. So I get them back to ridiculous sharpness it's addictive now in November to check the sharpness on the thumb nail because the garden is now ready for winter.

    • @TheBusyGardener
      @TheBusyGardener  Před 2 lety +1

      @abelgerli Před 2 lety

      @@TheBusyGardener Actually Felco is only about 210 miles away in Switzerland and we in Southwest Germany pay about the same for an Okatsune. But it's advisable to buy a wet stone also from okatsune to sharpen them even when you don't have to do it often.
      I actually have a double scabbard for the pruners from okatsune. In front with space for the pruners and in the back with space for a folding Japanese saw. I use the silky Gomboy 210 curved that fits perfectly into the scabbard so I have always the perfect tool at hand if I encounter a branch to thick for the pruners.
      That's the perfect combination and my sister also bought them after she borrowed my combination several times.
      Take a look at the silky gomboy curved because of the curve it has a smaller tip so you can get in tighter spaces. Best wishes from the valley below castle Lichtenstein.

    I buy the cheapest one . . I think they are $4 @ Walmart . I've bought many of them . Often enough they won't completely close when cutting. But they will cut a 1/2 to 3/4 inch branch but prehaps not a clean cut on a 1/8 to 3/8 inch branch. But they are cheap enough to be an actual bargin and sometimes they work perfectly
    The Walmart prunning shears long handle are absolutely the best of any shear. The steel tube handles never slide off the shank as they do in a $30 high quality shear . The $7 Walmart shears ( yellow handle ) can cut through a one inch or larger branch with one handle braced against the ground while I use my body weight on the other handle. Cuts refrigeration copper tubing very nicely with one handle braced against the floor. The cutting steel doesnt deform or snap. The handles stay on . . They cut aluminum cable easily up to say 3/8 inch thick . They are great for yard clearing, and scrap metal applications and I highly recommend then.
    I should add I use a cheap hand pruner in clearing land rendering long branches to small pieces. A precision cut is not my goal.

      Some people and I use to be one, like quality tool.The look and feel. The elegance of design. Gary Heilig is one such person. See his review on an expensive double compound long handle shear. I have had extensive experienced with long handle orchard shears over the past . Well since 1995

      Agreed that sometimes people are paying way more than they need to for a tool, for name or looks alone. For me, I really work hard to get as great a value on a tool, and it pains me to pay any more than I need to. With the number of cuts I'm making per year on these trees, it made sense to buy a higher quality tool. For other one-off projects, I love value brands that can get the job done, but where I'm only expecting light duty

      @@TheBusyGardener I use to be an admirer of fine elegant hand tools. But in my hobbies those fine tools more often are an attraction for tool borrowers. I now admire cheap tools that I can replace easily . Like the $15 Harbor freight angle grinder. Previous to that I purchased a Metabo 4 1/2 angle grinder ( 1980 ) at $210. .
      Hand shears are convenient to leave outside at the location I would be using it and a $4 hand shear is perfect for that . Those Walmart hand shears the plastic handles do not break or separate from the tool steel and the scissoring pivot doesnt lock up from rust
      The cheap hand shears at Homedepot I think they are about $12. 95. That is not cheap enough to abuse them like I abuse tools . In that case I would consider the $17 to 24 dollar pair with the intent better care of the tool. Really requiring a belt holster for their preservation and not losing them
      One thing in this category of cheap vs expensive is plastic lawn rakes and plastic snow shovels over their steel counter parts . The plastic rakes are far better to a steel lawn /leaf rake . Broader fan . Light weight .and really easier to operate

      Those ribbion springs, in consider them the worst. Because the coil will slip over the adjacent coil and jam the action. Admittedly that's with a cheap pair I prefer round wire coil spring. I do a lot of pruning with $3 Harbor freight diagonal cutters. I use them on my small fruit trees they pocket easily and cheap enough when I can't find them once I lay them on the ground . If I purchased a $24 pair I would definitely require a single use holster. $45 Dollar pair. Holy mackeral I would have to hire a butler to handle a walnut case with matching pair of $45 pruners to be presented and retrieved from me after a single cut.
