  • Jujutsu Kaisen manga has changed a lot in the last few chapters. Rather that be designs, backgrounds, everything about the art changed. In this art analysis video, we are going to explain the change in Jujutsu Kaisen mangas art, how it effected characters like Gojo, and the mangaka, Gege Akutami.

    Though I tend to lean towards the older art style, one thing that benefits from Akutami’s scratchy style are the fights, which became more impactful with the use of speedlines and shading, adding to Akutami’s great use of figure posing and backgrounds, and you can see why people really like JJK’s fights.
    Also, I too am waiting for the eventual Yuji x Gojo x Megumi scene.

    • @caitchri2426
      @caitchri2426 Před 5 měsíci +13

      I will say, as someone who draws and went to college for art- sometimes you can lose a LOT of expression and feeling in drawings when you clean it up, or don’t work gestural. A gestural drawing is more focused on motion, and flow of a figure. When you clean it up, pretty up your lines, and give it more form: you can miss out on the raw and chaotic feeling. You lose some imagination of the piece.
      I like pretty manga when I want to relax and enjoy quieter moments but with JJK I am absorbed in the action- the instinct of the fight- the surprise in every kick and trick.
      Gege is a master of quickness and feeling. He has to get on the page what punch lands next- making the fight seem organic and primal.

    Personally I think Akutami’s peak in art was during his transition from his old style to his current style, during the Hidden Inventory and Shibuya Incident. It just had the right amount of messiness where it conveys all the grit that matches the tone of his series without getting occasionally lost in the sauce that his current style sometimes leaves you. It’s also just clean enough where it doesn’t look as generic as it does at the beginning of the series and still soft enough opposed to currently where everyone looks a bit patchy and squared off. It’s weird because I’ve never seen an artists transition period be better than the original or final product before.

    Sometimes I believe that people don’t realize that drawing is somewhat similar to writing. Like yes at the start you are careful, drawing everything with caution but somewhere down the line it becomes like cursive and you form your style and go with it without looking back or checking again because you know it by heart. I think Gege just improved and formed his style and you can see how it is drawn with much more ease and flow. At least that’s how I see it.

    I will say as an artist i've always been a fan of his artwork whether it be 2018 or 2023. The thing about his 2018 artwork is that its hard to mimic though, and at least for me, and I think that's because its harder to make perspective and dynamic figures for your drawings when you always draw with sharp lines instead of using curves every now and then. What I picked up from watching him is that he still has his old art style but hes made it more versatile with curves and dynamic poses for the characters fights and overall just any panel. So now they no longer look stiff or too static

    There are loads of dissatisfaction about Gege's new art style... Personally I find that amazing and so pleasing to read. It is simplified and sure, some pages look weird since Gege hasn't drawn certain characters since a long time + loads of time pressure. Still, I offer every ounce of appreciation...

    I like pretty much all the changes .... except for the character designs. They look alien reptilian now, especially Gojo. In fight scenes you could mistake the almost fish-eyed lens effect on the faces as just being characters in motion, but the odd distortion effect is still in place when they're just standing still.

    • @LeoArmada
      @LeoArmada  Před 5 měsíci +1

      Kinda meh, low detail, unstable linework, low linework amout, it feels like the mangaka is trying to almost like, make a formula to put these out in the most time efficient way, or like, the art is secondary. Low key though CSM fell off for a bit till the newest few chapters, so im hoping the art will also just take a left turn back to the greatness of early PART 1 (or even late part 1, that art was the bomb.)

      He said he was tired of drawing if u heard but i think i could love still and wait more for longer beautifuler chapters if he would make more pause .

    They use ai/3d models for backgrounds
    In previous manga like sun-Ken rock they’d take photos & use obvious black & white photos
    While not everyone uses this method, I feel it’s quite common now. Even used in Dandadan!

  • @dannypavlov223
    @dannypavlov223 Před 7 měsíci

    The complicated backgrounds are probably either traced over 3d models or simply are "cell shaded" 3d models, as drawing them without a base would take way too much time. Other than that, great video!
