    I really like how the manga in later parts can look and feel like 2000s anime while it flips to a more sharp design that gets you by surprise especially in the succession war arc where it feels standard shounen but switches to seinen content which is awesome.

    I think Togashi's back pain is combined with headaches and migraines. While term "back pain" seems small, it is still central cord of nerve systems. If something goes wrong there it can reflect pain to all parts of the body. Movement of the hand radiates impulse to the back and that in turn might send painful signal to the brain.
    I am not expert on this and mostly base this on simplimistic view. Every nerve signal goes through spinal cord as it reaches the brain so it is not surprising misalignments around back area can make whole body go numb.

  • @NeptuneCactus
    @NeptuneCactus Před 2 lety +48

    Great video! Togashi's artwork is something I find so consistently fascinating to analyze, because it's so aestetically interesting. I'm 200% sounding like the pretentious nerd I am when I write this, but I actually enjoy the unfinished artwork quite a bit. Mainly because infamous panels, like Gon waving goodbye in front of the woods communicates a point of intrest through the bare minimum, that actually it's a very pure expression of an idea, which as an artist I love. Compromise and the manga industry go hand in hand of course, so other infamous moments like the end of Greed Island are, of course, exactly that. If it looked finished constantly, I don't think I'd be saying "I wish this was unfinished" but it's that borderline expressionism that compelled me the most to manga chimera ant and especially the election (my favorite hunter x hunter arc). Your descriptions of everyone was spot on. It's that mix of cartoony personality driven designs that I love about Togashi's draftsmanship, almost like whoever dominates the page, dominates the tone of the page. This is why I keep coming back to expressionism. I think of the impressive pages like Netero's giving thanks being a wonderful example of crosshatching right next to Gon's transformation near the end of the arc accented by brush strokes. Then followed by the absolute essentials in the absolute compromised pages. It's something I really enjoy. I do hope Togashi's health improves and he is able to somehow finish HxH. But if not, videos like these definitely keep it alive.

    I always disagree about the direct connections to YuYu Hakusho. Hunter X hunter picks up the character traits of Yu yu Hakusho and makes a salad with it.
    Killua is the guy that acts fast and precise, like Hiei, but that's mostly a front and he's probably the most compassional of the roster along with Leorio,
    Leorio at the beginning seems to be kind of a jerk with golden heart and kind of dumb like Kuwabara. However, While Kuwabara is very hotheaded, Leorio tries to resolve everything trying to not resort to violence, Wich is a very Kurama thing to do.
    Gon resorts to creativity like Yusuke, and tends to act without thinking. But he's also very naive, wich is both a gift and a curse. I compare that mostly with Amanuma from Yu Yu hakusho, the kid that can put everyone in a videogame not knowing it was a death sentence to him.
    At Last Kurapika seems to be like Kurama, being very cautious and always trying to solve things using his head, but he also tends to slip and act recklessly if he's emotionally pushed, That's very Hiei of him.
    Something that Hunter X hunter has is that it has WAY more layers to their main characters, giving them situations where they would act in a way that would seem out of character in other mangas, but trough development make sense here.
    HxH chars are like coins. And they all flip in different ways.
    On the other side i believe Togashi style changes later because of his back pain, characters look more like Yuyu Hakusho characters the more the series advance Because that's the style more comfortable for Togashi. Gon Father looks a LOT like adult Yusuke, and he looks more like that the more the series advances.
    The background thing is definitely because of his back pains. I mean Togashi never draws a lot of backgrounds, but he used to draw backgrounds more often. Now he mostly does to set the scene, but he used to do that to also set the mood of a scene. Wich he almost doesn't do anymore.
    Im kinda Mad at him for refusing to resort to assistance. The man can barely draw anymore, he should focus more on laying out the pages and let other artists in charge of inking and such. Back in the Yu Yu Hakusho days i didn't mind, he was fine back then. But the man can barely get up to work now.

    Togashi is, artistically (because everyone know how good he is when we're talking about story-telling and world-building), one of the most underrated modern artist there is. People are defenitely too focused on the idea that manga drawings need to be linear, clean, easily readable and pleasant, and i think a lot of this thought process was behind the realization of the 2011 anime too (now, you can like it all you want, you can even subjectively prefer the anime atmosphere and art to Togashi's, but it was OBJECTIVELY a betrayal of his artistic vision), in order to make it more marketable and easily appreciable by people that were just searching for an entertainment series. And, well, on that regard it worked, almost everyone loved it and it's the #7 anime on MyAnimeList but, well, we all know what tend to be privileged on MAL between marketability/pleasantry and quality/artistic vision

    I totally understand why his art seems so simple and not detailed; because of his back pain. Despite me appreciating the work he has done considering his health problems, the art is as I said very simple or simplistic, with no details. Sometimes I can't undetstand what he is drawing, what he is trying to portray in the manga (in the succession arc that I have read up to a point) which is obviously a bad thing for me because I want to see clearly the panels, not having to squint my eyes and 'try' to see, looking at the panels over and over again to undestand some times. It is the same as One piece; very unclear art, I don't like it at all. It is my view, don't start barking like dogs.

    I'm not a big fan of his art. But their stories are responsible for anime that I love, which shows that you just need to be a good storyteller often.

      Interesting, I think his art style is phenomenal, although I think it’s fair to say that his back pain art is unfortunate.

    I really, really, really don't like how he draws. His background is amazing but his characters are mediocre. Not the design but how they're drawn. That's just me tho.

    It should be called a novelution really, of how much fucking texts there is.
    A devolved form of his old artistic style, not caring about the background or anything, just the characters.
    Not saying it's a bad thing, nor its a good one.
    Its just a decent shonen, even a seinen at some points.

    • @Homodemon
      @Homodemon Před 8 měsíci

      The dumb amount of text has always been there, even during the heaven's arena arc when Nen got instrocuced, is nothing new, we just got less patient due to the time we gotta wait for the continuation but the long winded exposition has always been a feature on HxH
