Beastars Wouldn't be Nearly as Good in 2D Animation

  • Given Studio Orange's reputation, I don't think the title is that controversial, but I still wanted to dive into what I think Beastars does so well and how CG lends its strengths to those elements and ultimately makes for an incredible story and show. Of course, we have no idea what a 2D adaptation would have looked like, but I think it would be hard to compete with what we got. But let me know your thoughts and enjoy!

      It seems to me that there are odd undertones of other innate things or cultural things here.
      Obviously the instinct that this animal naturally would eat me given the chance is a deep undertone of this world.
      It's a stand-in for the conflicts of cultures, religions, essentially who's going to eat who (literally in this show, figuratively in real life).

      Indeed, and this is why we shouldn't support 3D animation.
      3D animation is easy, so easy that it's tempting to abandon 2D animation in favour of it, like what's happened in America. 2D animation takes forever, and costs a lot of money unless you overwork your animators (which you shouldn't), but it's so worth it, and I'm terrified of all anime one day looking like Kengan Ashura because of this

It will be worth it though, as we'll get more nuanced animation and less characters standing stiff-still while only their mouth moves because that's all the budget would allow for.

Trust me, what Louis does at the end of the murder mystery arc really does cement them more as two men who need each other because their goals align in complete sync with each other than lovers. Also it's kind of fucked up and I would be constantly feeling guilt if I were in Legosi's shoes for the rest of my life if I hooked up with Louis not too long afterwards. I was assuming the scene with the stuff flowing through legoshi's veins was to symbolise adrenalin, like it was his brain making sure he had energy/speed to "kill and eat his prey". I can see how that could be easily misinterpreted but I think that's the angle they were going for.

    One thing I find strange about the art style of Beastars is how different the eyes are of the various characters. Legosi, Aoba and Bill have these large white eyes with tiny black dots as their pupil, no iris. Louis, Juno, Els and Jack have what you'd call the stereotypical "anime eyes", with large, colorful irises. Haru and the Mayor have small dark eyes with no visible sclera, looking more animalistic. Finally, Gouhin has no visible eyes at all (though there are probably also small black eyes in the middle of the eye spots. I don't find any logic in what these different eye types represent.

    I'm imagining Legosi's transformation into his instincts be like, a sudden black mist as he stares at his prey, it zooms in on his eyes, and then suddenly the Switch snap sound effect happens and his eyes instantly turn red, with a subtle yet noticeable black aura around him, panning out to show a shot of him staring down at his target.
    But IDK, I thought I'd be the type of thing that'd make your heart drop a bit, I'd happen so fast but not to fast to where the viewer doesn't know what's going on. Sort of like a light switch, with an ominous look into the dark for a few seconds. Besides, I'd be easier to animate, meaning I'd cost less. I'll do a rough animatic of my idea once I have time.

    One big thing about why 3D is helpful for this show: Ever notice how animators barely ever draw a point to the teeth on characters with sharp teeth? They only ever really draw it when they want them to look frightening- whether humanoid or more animal-like. I can only assume that's because it's annoying to draw so many edges, and especially to draw them realistically. But in Beastars? They don't have to draw them each time, and that's especially important for Beastars, because they not only draw each point but the way the teeth are shaped and laid out is VERY realistic. It would be a huge hassle to draw each time, and I think removing the aspect of such realistic, predatory teeth would be a small but important detail missed. When you have to stare at their teeth the whole time, being so shamelessly menacing but yet so harmless while being in the hands (or jaws, haha) of a good person.. that alone gives a feel for the vibes of the whole show. It reminds you that although the character you're looking at is a (normally) harmless and kind-hearted individual, they are still a predator, and it shows- whether they are acknowledging that or not. Their vicious teeth are basically symbolical of that.

    • @MrDestroyedSoulx
      @MrDestroyedSoulx Před 3 lety +6

      That's a great point. Never even thought about that.

    • @catpoke9557
      @catpoke9557 Před 3 lety +15

      @@MrDestroyedSoulx It's something I really admire in Beastars. They don't water things down at all. If your teeth are intricately designed to kill, then your teeth will always look as such. It doesn't matter if you yourself are not a menacing person (much like Legosi,) your body will not change to fit your lifestyle.
      Legosi is kind, understanding, gentle, and shy.. he is anything but menacing, or bold, or dangerous. In personality, that is.
      But his body is a wolf. Something menacing, bold, and dangerous. This show doesn't try to change his appearance to fit his personality, at all. To do so would kind of defy the point of the show. It'd imply he's somehow different from other predators, and that's why he's kind! He isn't scary, he isn't even capable of harm! Look at him!
      But no, he's just like all the others, even down to his behavior at his core. He, such a non-violent person, is even a dangerous one. He himself nearly KILLED a person, not because he wanted to, but because his body willed him to. That's what it is to be a carnivore in this world. No matter WHO you are, WHAT you are shows first. It's up to the people around you to try to see past it, rather than to pretend all is well in their world and pretend carnivores can be just as approachable and non-threatening as anyone else.
      They cannot. All they can do is accept them for who they are, whether their teeth are made to kill or made to graze.
      ...To summarize, Beastars is faithful to the world it has set up. It makes no exceptions. If you are designed to kill, your body and mind will always show it to some extent. If you are designed to run and to hide, your body and mind, too, will show it. And I love that. I've seen one too many stories that try to be deep by starring a character of some sort of 'dark' race, only to tone down their appearance and behavior to look more friendly.

    • @catpoke9557
      @catpoke9557 Před 3 lety +5

      @Ty The Great Just because 2D CAN do something, doesn't mean it's easy. It would take insane patience just to get even the teeth at this level of detail in every frame.
      Beyond that, there's also lots of effects 2D just cannot do, so that first statement isn't entirely true either.
      And there's nothing inherently bad about the way CG looks. The only reason people dislike it is because it's not common, so it feels awkward at first. Then you get used to it, and suddenly you don't care anymore.

    • @catpoke9557
      @catpoke9557 Před 3 lety +6

      @Ty The Great Do you really think the animators would take the time to do something that difficult? The difficulty level IS relevant. Why? This is a TV freaking budget. They're not going to spend that much money to get the point of a carnivore's teeth so detailed. And if they for some reason did, they'd have to... that's right, cut the budget in other areas. They'd have to sacrifice movement in favor of stiff characters like they do in anime where the characters wear elaborate clothes, or maybe have the characters randomly turn 3D anyways the moment they have to actually move for once.
      You're imagining a world in which whatever can be done, will be done. But this is not that world, so that's irrelevant. They have a BUDGET to follow.
      Beyond that, again, 2D can NOT do anything 3D can. It can do basic things, but there's certain types of rendering that 2D literally cannot do. Like a realistic fire. Does Beastars have realistic fire? I doubt it. But that doesn't matter, because it still makes your statement false.
      And beyond that, "the CGI sucks" does not explain, in any way, how the CG is actually bad. Do you just dislike cel-shaded rendering? Because I am willing to bet that's why you dislike it. Which is an EXTREMELY subjective stance. I can't think of anything in the animation that is objectively 'bad' or 'cheap,' or anything like that.

      I think it has a style that translates well to 3d mostly because they are animals. Traditional anime characters look off and i almost wanna say boring because its just big eyes nose and mouth with plain clothes. Or its detailed mechs and suits with a very plain looking character. So its just kinda jarring to see that change. Jojo could work in 3d and does pretty well in the games because of how detailed the characters are so the model doesn’t look stagnant.

There is no reaction from them, and no questioning either. So, I assume it is purely representative. I did, however, think it was a bit much.

      I've only watched the anime, but considering Legoshi's instincts play a significant role in the story, I'd say the nervous system and flare-up animations served well in showing said significance. However, if they were to improve it, I can agree to an extent, as they could've used body cues like muscles tensing and expression shifting instead of the signal animation. The red flare-up can still stay though, as without it his instincts wouldn't have been quite as heated or noticeable to the general audience even with help from different, more dramatic camera angles.

    • @jaderose116
      @jaderose116 Před 4 lety +1

      I believe that his instincts explosive energy shown in the anime was just enough, although I get where everyone's coming from, but in the anime the characters communications and actions were portrayed within there own minds majority of the time, leaving me to believe that the berserk scene was perfectly displayed in showing just how hard it was for him to suppress these dark sides of himself, and how it tore through him as he fought to keep his instincts at bay all from his point of view on the inside. And as we all know he purposely tries through out the season to seem weaker than what he really is knowing just how dangerous and monstrous he really can be. Which gets you to love the characters a little more knowing through text and visual content just how they struggle to want.

    I don't know why, but I absolutely ADORE the split camera shots (or the parts where it tries to emulate the manga's pages). I've always loved these kinds of shots, being able to see two or more characters in completely different shots at a close up and all animated at once instead of awkwardly standing there is amazing. There is just so much emotion oozing from those scenes, even when they aren't meant to be tense. I can tell the animators had a passion for what they did, and they made it as good as they could (imo).

    One thing about the scene where Legosi's instincts suddenly take over (the "Lavagosi" scene): In the anime this transformation-like sequence plays and Legosi went full predator mode. And in the manga there was no sequence and Legosi was still able to soliloquise. He was slowly carried away and the panel you showed was just the moment where Haru began to run and his body started to move on its own. Not only gave the Lavagosi sequence the impression that he was controlled by something supernatural, it also changed the way predatory instincts work in the show.
    Another and super obvious thing is just the line-count. Furred animals are just so work intensive. Remember the mandrill dorm mother who yelled at Legosi for breaking curfew? Her animation was horrible and this is what would happen if you tried to animate so work intensive characters. They would have had to change the art style to something more cartoony to make it easy to animate by hand. I'm so happy that Beastars was made in 3D, so we could keep this approach with a semi-realistic art style.

    • @Gladius_15
      @Gladius_15 Před 4 lety +18

      I think that "the Lavagosi scene" was unnecessary and still confusing. In the manga, Legoshi starts running towards Haru because she started running first, this is just a canine's instinct. In the anime, they did this styling and it felt like something supernatural, especially with him squirming.

    Provably going to be an unpopular opinion, but, while the 3D aspect gave Beastars its own style, it also made it way worse in regards to emotional expressions. Half of what was conveyed in manga was pretty much lost because overexaggeration didn't fit with the general aesthetics of 3D models. And mangaka really loves his goofy faces. A big difference between 2D animation and 3D animation is that 3D is a mathematically perfect rendering between each frame and you can pick up on that subconsciously, its is limited by its own exact proportion, size, scale and movement due to it really just being a rotated and posed 3D model. With 2D animation, each frame is entirely different, you don't really notice how everything changes but you can tell its substantially different than a 3D image thats attempting to appear 3D. 2D is an organic animation where the impression of the artists lines go beyond the literal and mathematical lines that are supposed to be there. Basically 3D is accurate to a fault while 2D is inaccurate to the benefit of the art.

    The thing I really like about the Beastars anime is that they know how to use the CGI effectively.
    They know it's strengths and it's weaknesses. When something will look better in 2D, they do it in 2D. It really helps to make the show have a natural and distinct feel, as opposed to a lot of other shows, especially anime, that just use 3D to save time/money without really understanding how much worse it can look it you don't do it correctly.
    It's just like what you said about the differences between manga panels and animation. They have different intents and limitations, and so you should always be working with and around those, not treating them the same. Otherwise it's like trying to use watercolors the same way you'd use a pencil. It just won't look right.
    I especially like when they use 2D for effects around the CGI models. Like smoke or water, it flows so nicely contrasted with the stiffer 3D models that it ends up looking better than if they did the whole thing 2D.
    I'm an anime only at the moment, but I have loved the art style of the manga and will probably get into it soon. Especially if we don't get another season for the anime.

    I've read the whole manga and I have to agree, this story is so good in a 3D show. There are so many scenes I can't wait to see. I hope it gets a few more seasons, not just 1 more. I love the manga for sure, it has its own charms, but the anime is just breathtaking. I love the decisions they made with body language, especially getting to see the fur ruffle. I also love the decisions they made in the show to make sure the 3D isn't jarring. The slight choppiness, the effects like the stretch you mentioned on Legoshi, the way they did the shading and outline. I think the manga panel thing also helps with this, too. It is a strange decision, as you mentioned, but I think it totally works, personally. I think giving the shots kind of a manga vibe also helps with the goal of making the CG not jarring, since most of us are accustomed to 2D anime. I'm looking forward to the future of 3D anime tbh. I miss the artistry that anime used to have in 2D. There are some really good digital animations, don't get me wrong, but I think 80s hand drawn traditional stuff is so pretty. The 3D is also really pretty, at least from this studio, so I'm pretty excited. I'm glad we've finally reached this point in 3D anime.

It's not like it has the most complex art style ever, JoJo or Vinland Saga have even more complicate, detailed style yet were adapted wonderfully. Some sacrifice in details would have to be made, but it's not like the CG art style in Beastars is 100% accurate to the manga anyway.
      We never see Beastars being done in 2D so of course the common reason people would use for Beastars being in CG is like what you said. But that just make me even more curious to see what it could have been if it was done entirely in 2D instead.

    Thus making it unique.
    The fact that the facial expressions and such not looking as goofy as in the manga is not really a problem too, because they make up for it in different ways.
    It also makes me think of how we humans see animals. I mean, when we see animals, they don't really look like they're making certain emotions on their face most of the time, it's just how they look like. We know what our pets wanted because of the way they act, not by looking at their facial expressions...or at least I don't, so the animation is already showing lots of expressions I'd say.

    I think one of the most beautiful shots that only would have worked in 3D was after Legoshi meets his friend at the bus stop and they discuss why they wouldn't eat the man's fingers.
    The lights in the back and the reflection are so beautiful.

    I think it should've been mentioned that scenes and characters on a first watch through, its hard to tell who is 3d and who is 2d. It blends that well at times. It was only through a second watch through, after hearing about this, that I did notice when it switched or combined.

    love your vid! i've met Beastars in the manga and so when i first watched the anime it was quite a shock, but i liked it and couldn't tell exactly why. your vid made me notice a lot of subtle things i couldn't point out, so thanks for that!
    honestly i'm a big fan of the manga but i love what the studio is doing in the anime, i think it's a very good adaptation and i'm glad to know this masterpiece is reaching more public.

    I absolutely loved the atmosphere in the Beastars anime. I haven't watched it in quite a bit nor have I caught up to it just yet (I did finished the manga) but the atmosphere I got from the 1st episode was what grabbed my attention to the series the first time.

    I really wanna see this series, so I'm going to wait for March to come around. I- do not have the best association with Netflix. (Tried to order a bunch of rental movies from them back in Aughts, say, 2008 or so. Movies never arrived and i got billed for the damn things.) So, when Beastars comes out globally, I will watch it with significant glee!

      I h8ghot suggest reading the manga first imo since we still have to wait for season 2 to finally get to the murder solution arc along with the hybrid arc.

    I LOOOVE this series!!!! I just love the dark themes with the instinctual, animalistic depiction in the art style, I wish more people would have the balls to make series like this one
