Solo Longsword in One hand - the Albion Talhoffer

- I played around with my new sharp - the Albion Talhoffer, a very good average representative of XV century longswords. And one that works quite well in two hands or one - with a variety of grips you will see.
WARNING: Handling a sharp sword, even in solo drills, is incredibly dangerous. Do not do so without proper training, preparation, and supervision.
Do not attempt what you see in the video - relatively fast solo drilling on uneven terrain - before you've done 100s of hours of the same with a blunt.

Very nice video! Great that you go into so much details on how the sword handles with both two-handed grips, left and right, and also the one-handed handling.

I have one of those! You could thrust through and Elephant with almost no resistance. Of course, the Elephant will be very, VERY angry! :-)

Nice Video as always! Do you have a source for your thesis on the use of the index finger in high and late medieval sources on the longsword?
Not with longsword, but considering there are so many with arming sword, I think it's fair to assume it was done sometimes.

I was wondering if you've tried this in conjunction with heater shield. I know historically shields were out of fashion by the 15th century, but we often see the combination of shields and longsword one handed in fiction, so just something I was curious about.
Only solo, with a longsword blunt. Actually, there are a few illustrations of longsword plus big shield.
@@borislavkrustev8906 I have seen a few artwork examples. I think it would be really cool and interesting if you made a video demonstrating longsword + large/heater shield. It would be cool to see since it's not ever talked or mentioned in HEMA just like how you demonstrated here with one hand longsword
omg how scary is to drill with a sharp sword, bravo 👌 hey, do you think you could be more balanced by breathing from your core, or belly? that would relax your shoulders and let you slide your feet on the ground, avoiding some feet crossing and brake of the flow. it is something you get from other disciplines like boxe or kendo.. which comes pretty helpful with longsword too. what do you think? Gorgeous sword, have fun!
My form is a bit messy here for two reasons - the terrain is uneven, there is mud under the grass (I actually slid 3-4 times on it, kept my balance barely), and I am handling a sharp, so I am not going for very explosive footwork. I actually do breath from my core, it's just that for the purposes of the video I am doing much more with my hands and arms and much less with my legs.
@@borislavkrustev8906 ye ye I see 😀 i ve been sparring in the backyard yesterday in army boots on a sort of frozen mud, i feel you so much! but i never tried drilling with a sharp. i guess it is an interesting feeling too
@@gremlin633 The really interesting feeling comes when you manage to touch your head while working on hangings and you start patting you hair and looking for blood :D I'd advise to try it first on a very, very flat solid floor.

Is there a limit to the weight of a longsword in order to be used one handed even if the balance was good or the blade was short?
Well... no, if you have the strength for it. But generally longswords above 1,7 kg are not balanced in a way that is good for one-handed use.
True there's a big difference between a a little over 1 kg and almost 2 kg, 1,7 kg is almost 4 lbs that's a big sword
@@kirbyjohnson3756 The one in the video is right in the middle - 1,5 kg.
There are some arming swords which reach 1,4 kg, btw. Rapiers if that weight are not uncommon either.
It is a bastard sword. To be used at full potential with 2 hands, but still able to perform ok in one hand, specially with a shield.
Give me a historical source for that definition and I will agree with it :D

Really? Can you show me videos of your fencing, so I can learn?
Dam the way you be flailing that thing around its scary for you to do it with a sharp. You might want to work on your edge control before you accidently cut your self. Alot of those angled decending cuts look very messy. Are you sure you should be swinging around a sharp. Id suggest you seek out a school to better your form.
Ahahah, I've been swinging swords for over a decade, sharps included. And I do have a club - one where I teach at.
But sure, show me a video of your cuts, so I can learn better :)

@@borislavkrustev8906 bro im at work right now. Went to click on this video in hopes of being educated and just saw some one flail around with a sword. When people click on these we excpect to see good sword work to learn from. Your the one posting videos and running a school so ur the one who should be posting good sword work videos not me. If im a newer fencer and can see that your sword work is bad then maybe you should rethink posting videos or running a school. Im not the one trying to educate people when my sword work looks like that you are. Maybe dont half ass your videos before you upload them make sure it looks good.
@@jimlo632 My point is, if you can't walk the talk, your opinion on the matter doesn't have much weight.
While I will never claim my form is perfect, I know from experience cutting and fighting that it is high enough level to not bother listening to people who don't have the confience to post their fencing publicly.
