Proof that historical detail can be cinematically compelling. You don't need a swordsman to wildly flail about to show anger, you don't need gigantic swords and acrobatics.
True. One exception is when a Montante is involved lol
@@sam12149 I should have worded more correctly: Oversized swords. Super thick and broad beyond what historical weapons would normally be. Two-headed axes and final fantasy buster blades were what I was driving at rather than Lowlander swords and Montantes.
i agree, and these men arent film makers, per se. There were a few moments i think we lost some of the more complex techniques, but imagine showcasing these moves more clearly with higher cinematic budget.
@@magistar2243
Let’s not forget these men were good, but might not have been ultimate fighters. They might not have know or at least not perfected complex techniques.
Lol why complain about gigantic swords longswords were never ultra popular but they definitely were used mostly after 1360 but 70 percent of guys would walk around with an arming sword or side sword after 1450 when rings started to get added on the top than in 1480 we start to see the knuckle bow become commonly added for guys who didn’t want to wear gauntletss

WOW. This goes beyond the Knight of Hope - this is a phenomenal period drama where every scene is like seeing a Dührer painting come to life. Phenomenal work - truly historically accurate swordsmanship and period drama ♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️
Reminds me a lot of the Ridley Scott movie The Duelists.
@@LandersWorkshop Absolutely, such a phenomenal piece of art, I wish there was the budget for a full length piece
@@NoName-lo9ymI totally agree with you.
Frankly Hollywood needs to step up to your level, guys. Your shows are amazingly well performed and produced :O
It's the same shit as John Wick. People fucking appreciate actual good fight choreo done by professionals. I'm super glad that they've finally started to catch on with gun stuff, but they're really sleeping on hiring groups like Adorea to bring their historical combat up to par.
@@DawnSentinel And also here done on a shoestring budget.
It shows you how truly FAR a dedicated group can get without billions to back it up, and all done realistically, painfully and beautifully.
As sad as it is, I think too few people are interested in historically accurate swordsmanship for it to be worth the cost and effort of producing it. I hope I am wrong in this, because this short proves that you can make it engaging and easy to follow as a viewer.
@@smokingbobs1344 the other problem is that I'm pretty sure most film health and safety teams would have a fit if you told them you were going to do anything like this.
@@DawnSentinel John Wick is terrible.
I am beyond hyped about this. Your Knight of Hope is my favourite fight scene and favourite short film ever.
It's just like Jackie Chan practicality combined with Jet Li's elegance. Can't wait for next trailer.
Yeeeea knight of heope is the best
I came in expecting glorious historical martial arts, and I got that, but what I didn't expect was the gorgeous Shakespearean drama I was given as well. I'm shocked that a twelve minute story could make me feel these kinds of emotions. You guys are all in a league of your own, and I can't wait to see future projects !
Thank you for these amazing words! We are so glad for that.
That double hit was pretty brutal. I think I wasn't supposed to root for the short-tempered friend but I was sad to see him die.
I think that's the real message here: there are no winners.
Agreed
It wasnt a double hit that did the fatal damage. His opponent trapped his blade with his long knife at the same moment as he thrust with his rapier (that particular style has a different name but I forget what its called) after binding the sword and also trapping it, hitting him in the right chest region, around the pec with his rapier (?) only. It was actually a brilliant simultaneous combination.
By the breathing sounds they tried to make, it sounded like a pneumothorax or hemothorax injury in both, not to mention a hard slash injury to grey-hairs left arm and neck. Fatal in short order without the proper medical help, which at the time they had no way of knowing.
There were no winners indeed. Dark hair had to do his duty. And his best friend lost his temper at insult from the adjutant and sealed his fate, one way, or the other.
And of all, the biggest losers were those left behind. The family.
The whole scenario was supposed to be sad, two friends being forced to fight was never going to be a happy ending
I love how unapologetically glorious these videos are. They are defiantly well made because they don’t rely on cheap gimmicks like overly flashy acrobatics & combat or CGI effects, or Netflix’s budget (although Netflix did squander their budget on shitty costumes for the Witcher series).
Ballsack armor lmao.
You must also understand that The Witcher is different because witchers are literally superhuman, the flashy techniques work because they are so fast that most standard humans wouldn’t be able to do a thing against them.
@@zhenoob Yeah that shit was weird. I think they were trying to make it look like muscle without skin so they they would all look flayed but that doesn't really make sense. Everyone else might have considered Nilfgaard evil but they thought they were doing the right thing so why would they be running around in such blatantly evil looking armor? The second season armor made a lot more sense.
@@Maxranviir Also the fact that most of the monsters they hunt have about the same intelligence as an animal so a fighting style designed to confuse and disorient a monster wouldn't be great against a person without a Witchers advantages. Which would explain why he uses a reverse-grip so often. It's next to useless against a person but against something like a gryphon, that's probably the only way to get the blade deep enough to hit something vital.
wow what a way to tell a story of friendship, honor and betrayal. You have don it again.
This fight is so sad. The swings and stabs, the look on the eyes of a friend and someone who is lost in anger only to realise at death's door what has happened and the guilt that comes with it. I love it and thank you.
Excellent reconstruction of the duel. Around 6:45 the black hair guy got a serious thrust to the chest. He must have felt he was mortally wounded because his mouth was filled with blood. As an gallant duelist, he wanted to keep fighting to return the blow, despite the tragedy of the whole situation of the duel with the friend. In general, after being a pierced with a rapier in a duel, you tried to take your opponent with you, wanting at least to be considered a winner after the death (and you hoped that God would forgive you despite of all).
Thank you for this valuable comment!
This short film portrayed fencing as tragic and not glorious. The adrenaline rush pushed me into worry. However, the most heartbreaking moment was at the end of the duel. SPOILER: While grasping at each other, they embraced as friends again. IMHO, this level of objectivity toward our valued subject (swordfights!) is unequaled among HEMA/reenactment teams.
The times of kings and lords was truly a terrifying age where you were basically fucked in every situation. If you were a peasant you were fucked for you would most likely die from starvation or sickness, or a victim of war.
if you were a noble, you had to deal with the endless political drama game of people constantly trying to one up each other. Even being neutral was dangerous for it could lead to people make false assumptions about you.
The moment his best friend pissed off the lord he was fucked. There is some historical records of people in similar situations who went through torture that would make the devil look merciful. , Being given the option of how to kill his friend was a mercy in itself.
Wow, you reached a point were the duel is 'just' a natural part in an otherwise interesting story!
This and Akademia Szermierzy are two of the best channels out there when it comes to cinematic fighting. Hats off to you for producing such great, compelling short films. If only they'd give you the budget of a Hollywood movie, you'd make content 10x as good.
That would be great to have such big budget :D
@@AdoreaOlomoucWich century shows the film? 15th? Or 16th?
@@user-jn2dw8ru1u Judging by the costumes, my impression is this should be sometime between say 1500 and 1550. (To be fair, the word "adjutant" used at 1:52, not just in the subtitles but also in the original Czech voiceover, by the letter-writer to describe the position of the man who was stabbed by the grey-haired duelist, would almost certainly not yet at that time have made it into Czech, as it is derived from the Spanish "ayudante" and had not yet even made it into French by 1671 - but that one word is just a minor anachronism, whereas clothes and material culture all fit the timeframe I mentioned.).
I wonder why the Kings man provoked the short-tempered soldier, hadn't his reputation preceded him?
And why would the King command his best friend to kill him?
EXEMPLARY short film!

You guys understand that a good fight has a good story behind it but I wasn't expecting this level of story telling. This is outstanding! Respect to the Adorea Fight Team and Troy Horse Film!
Wow. I'm stunned. Everything fits so well together. The story, the music, the costumes, the choreography. A masterpiece for how short it is, but still manages to get me more emotional than a 2 hour Hollywood blockbuster. The story of friendship and honor even after betreyal.
The fact that the actual fight scene wasn't like 20 Minutes long. But as long as someone would expect it to last between two friends.
Bravo Adorea!
I felt more emotionally invested in your movie than any Netflix crap produced recently. And yeah, like others said, the fighting choreography is top notch, better than anything you can see in Hollywood!
The amount of storytelling in such a short span is remarkable! I felt more attached to these to characters than many other characters which I’ve spent hours with! And the fencing is so well executed, and choreographed.
Duty or friendship, it is not always an easy choice, but as was said, "The honour must never be lost".
Not only you are excellent swordsmen, you are also very good actors! Nicely done! Greetings to Olomouc!
I'm a historical reenactor and in my first steps in this activity I had the luck (and may I say the honour) to be trained by a good fencing master. Then I realized swords are maybe the first weapon designed especially against humans. They're not for hunting. And this realization brought a change in my choice of reenacting role. Many of the great people in reenactment choose warrior reconstruction and do it well (the men from Adorea being an eminent case of incredibly well-done work). For me, things went to the reconstruction of a priest. My first attempt was a late 13th century Franciscan friar. I slowly shifted to Late Antiquity, now trying to make my research for a Late 4th century Arian presbyter, learning the liturgy and some Greek, building the inventory. Warriors in pre-Modern and Early Modern societies had a relationship with priests, often a turbulent one but a relationship nonetheless. I'm just a man in love with history, not a real priest but I think it's in honour of these difficult human relations that we reenactors do what we do. And here I am, admiring the splendid work of Adorea and thinking of past voices silenced by swords. Thanks for another great short film! For this is not just a video, it's a film in its own right.
Your contents are really good and epic. As a historian, I love to see realistic fights, way better than the Hollywoodese ones.
Toss A Coin To Your Duelists !
It would be awesome if this could be turned into a television series. Maybe like a prequel that follows the meeting and building of friendship between the two main characters that explains why the friend chose to kill who I presume was a noblemen.
This would have made an amazing feature-length movie.
This was an amazing short film...the acting, emotion, choreography, but what really took it to another level, a much higher level, was the narration and the content of the letter from the father to his son. Bravo!
I always expect a twist in AO's videos, but this twist absolutely surprised me! You guys write such good stories, and produce videos with imagery that reflects the story perfectly. You're extremely talented, and I'm grateful you share these films!
Some people from Hollywood should watch this...and envy and think and, most importantly, LEARN!
Hey! I came here for a swordfight, not some cinematic masterpiece!
Well done, ladies, gentlemen, and others.
More historical awesomeness can't wait
Still a couple of seconds, hope you’re all back to watch live.
I like the fact that there was no real victor in the duel
Hyped hyped hyped. Y’all’s camerawork needs medals 🏅 🎖 🥇
This was fantastic! My only minor criticism is that the filming did not allow the audience to see some of the action. I had to watch the sequence around 7.18 about 3 times before I worked out what really happened (as an old sport fencer and historical european swordsmanship fan): the two rapiers go corp a corp, but one guy still has the parrying dagger. He can't reach his opponents body but can thrust the dagger into his opponents sword hand. A fight ender....
But then he has already suffered a fatal thrust. He still needs to win the duel though for his son, his family and the future generations. Great stuff!
This is truly epic, awesome sword fighting, very cinematic. I enjoyed this very much. Dope.
They died as friends, hugging each other.
Hurry to see it brothers ! ⚔️
It's so calming to see that productions about honor combined with a good story and without all this modern nonsense are still possible. We must turn our gaze to the central and eastern Europe if we don't want to get frustrated and demoralized by modern series. Do we really want to see a 'strong woman' besting a dozen skilled fighters or do we want to see a father protecting his loved ones, making hard dissisions and keeping his honour. Thank god for my eastern neigbours! I say "let's have diversity then": they have Hollywood, and we have creators like Troy Horse Film with Adorea Olomouc. Na zdraví and greetings from The Netherlands.
Agreed!! 👏🏽👏🏽
Well said, good sir!
What is so awesome about this is that this kind of stuff went on throughout medieval history. We always read about the Kings and the Grand Dukes. But what about the lower noblemen? The men who didn't make it into the history books? Those men lived like these men and this was very much a way of life for them.
brilliant from start to finish: the costumes, the music, the atmosphere + characters, the skills involved + the story behind it all. fantastic! [el'sda2].
First time a sword fight has brought a tear to my my eye splendid work look forward to what's next
This was way better than any swordplay that I’ve seen in recent television or online streaming. The story was compelling and the cinematography was outstanding. The violinist just added a layer of artistic yet completely realistic and historically accurate magic to the scene. 10/10!
Unless there's some kind of obsolete violin technique I'm not aware of, holding the violin against your arm is everything but accurate

Very nice. Good storytelling in the forefront. Very good staged combat with very nice martial techniques, As a Swedish Czech living in New Zealand I hopefully will meet and possibly train with you at some point. Hollywood should come and learn from you and the ones that does this work. Well done.
Estupenda historia, y gran combate. Felicidades por el resultado.
Hell of a job telling a great story in just 10 min! You had more character development and connection in a few min than most Hollywood films can in two hours..
Another one?! I just went back to watching your channel and saw this!! YES!!! CAN'T WAIT!!
félicitation! Ce n'est pas en France que l'on verrais ce genre de film à la gloire de l'honneur et de la famille! Soyez béni!
I'm only ninety seconds in, and already the soundtrack is giving me goosebumps. Already a thumbs up.
Wow, kluci z Adorea jste super 👍bravo 👏 klobouk dolů.
These are literally the the coolest guys in the world!
Every video I’ve seen them do on their channel is absolutely amazing!
(GOOD JOB)👍
Maybe they can experiment with the cinematography here. While I do think the smaller and more compact camera angles make it feel chaotic and crazy like a real fight would be it’d be cool to see a wider or distanced angle and just generally a difference of shots in the fights as the compact shots are quite hard to follow what’s happening who’s being stabbed etc.
7:17 is an example of not understanding what’s happing because of the camera angle
@@highorder02 Totally agree. While I'm a fan, much of Adorea's work suffers from too much close-up handheld camerawork. It's very kinetic and exciting but eventually becomes fatiguing, and, worse, it's harder to appreciate the stellar choreography, performance, and stunts.
How, just how, do you put so much soul into these videos? When he said their lord chose him to be the weapon of vengeance, my heart plummeted. Bravo.
One person has disliked this. GET HIM!

These are some of my favorite things to watch. I wish all historical movies and shows had to use these guys as consultants.
I´m completely amazed by this film. It´s astonishing how rich and colourfull one can create deep characters for which the audience cares in mere 12 minutes. How many 2 hour, high budget productions can compete with this?
I couldn't even choose for who I was rooting for 😭😭😭

the choice was hard but as his friend it was his duty to make sure to punish him himself not let someone else do it it's beyond friendship it's brotherhood
