I’ve been working IT for almost 8 years and decided I want to jump ship and become a pilot as well!
My grandpa just had his 93rd birthday and flew in his Cessna just a week ago. He got his private license when he was 17 when it was a bit easier. He then was a pilot instructor in the Marines and was a biology teacher and restaurant owner.

If you are disciplined, part 61 is the way to go. If you require hand holding thru the process, part 141 is more appropriate. Both produce good pilots. It's just how you approach learning.

I'm a flight instructor and did it all Part 61, I recommend! (but try to maintain a strict schedule, kind of as if you were training Part 141). Study everyday, and fly at least 2-3 times a week onsistenantly or else you're repeating lessons.

I’ve had several other pilots and instructors reiterate this as well. Go part 61 for flexibility in scheduling and training environment, but hold yourself accountable like at a part 141 regimen with standards and learning the material.
If your school schedules your flight it's easy ,but if they mess up with the slots then it takes a lot of time 😊

In 2006 I went to a part 141 school in Orlando Florida, I had 11 different instructors because they left for the airlines and after 7 months the school went bankrupt. Now I started from scratch in part 61 here in Puerto Rico.

Thanks for the video. It may just be the way my brain works but sometimes I like having multiple instructors and other times I don’t for the same reasons. But having a different opinion can be quite useful. I have not flown yet just researching my options while a full time truck driver but in my experience I’ve done things the hard way for so long until I got that different opinion.

I 100% agree with you when you need to pick a career CFI, during my PPL training I went through 7 different CFIs, and it was super horrible and difficult to understand what I was suppose to be learning. That is kinda why I am leaning twoards a part 141 school for the rest of my pilot training, just so I can get it done with without the headache, but If I had a local flight school then I might reconsider

Part 61 can get you through just as quickly as a 141, it will all depend on instructor availability near you. Luckily for me my local 61 school is around the Dayton Ohio area so aviation is huge here (I19). I'm never worried about this school closing down.
The issue for most people taking part 61 isn't dependent on instructor availability but usually comes from having to pay out of pocket. While for 141 schools, flight loans are available.

I have a 4 y o son named Alex recently diagnosed with type 1 diabetes. His care is life long and expensive and I’m looking to a career where he’s taken care off. Most importantly I want to teach him that his condition will not define him and that anything is possible. This is brand new to me as my current career and degree are unrelated but thanks to your videos I can focus in the right direction. Thanks bro!

Great information there I can’t agree more with the flight school choice. I originally started out with a flight school that was subpar and instructors were just there gain hours and move on. They were also very disorganized with scheduling and plane maintenance. In the six courses that I took from the original flight school resulting in us taxing off the runway twice , once due to a bad mag and the second due to a faulty oil pressure gauge. On the third go round, we went to fly a plane that was never prepped from the day before and only had 10 gallons of fuel in each wing. After 45 minutes waiting for a fuel truck I finally decided this was not the place for me and walked off the field. Currently enrolled now in a smaller facility that I’ll be trying out tomorrow.

I bought a share of a plane after I soloed, dropped my cost to fly to $10/hour plus gas. It is possible to get your ratings without spending a lot of money, the journey is definitely the best part!

I had the exact same issue
Before my first solo I changed my instructor 3 times
First one was a young man that was there just to build his hours and get to the airlines
The second one I chose was an older instructor that loved his job but was always booked and couldn't get more than 1 flight every 2 weeks.
This delayed me and made me repeat lessons and cost me more money because the new instructor doesn't know what level of flying you are at.
Then I made a complaint and they put me with an amazing instructor, he was a deputy operation manager. 4 flight a week at least and within 3 flights I got my solo.
Put in mind any lessons you repeat have to be paid for. And do not take a break from flying even for 2 weeks before your first solo. You will have to repeat lessons.
Total cost is around $7,500 for the basic private pilot's license which is a great start to a bigger journey.

This comment is not intended as a slight, but Part 61 (pilot) doesn't compare to a Part 141 program. There are no "shortcuts" in aviation. For example, two years of Aviation Weather in a classroom vs rote memorization of the answers to an FAA written exam can/does make the critical difference for a professional pilot. If you want only a private license, go Part 61. If you want to be a career pilot, go Part 141. It will save your life one day.
Totally agree with your CFI point.. I had 3 for my ppl, it added 20 hours most likely to readjust to them
well made video! i’m having a hard time deciding whether to go 61 or 141, my end goal is to go to the airlines but i’m afraid schools like atp, aero guard, ect, might be too fast for me. I also live in iowa and extremely itch to get to a nice place to start training like florida or arizona

5:20 It’s important to mention it, but that’s how everything is. 😂 That’s just the nature of achievement. But just like anything, it is what you make it. So I agree with you that you need to slow down and try to enjoy it while you’re in it. Hard as that may be. Good video.
Im in my early 20s and decided to go part141. Yes definitely more expensive, but i enjoy the structure and took the risk to take a loan and not work because i know ill earn the money back fast. And i get a university experience that i missed out on at the location i chose. Plus a 500hr time reduction and a partnership to airlines seems more beneficial in my pov.

Part 61 is what I believe the kc flight school be I'm getting my class II aviation med is applied for piper archer and Seminole is what I look at working towards commercial pilot training

Thanks for these videos. I'm going to be second (really third career). I'm 35, married, with a kid. I'd love to get to the real jobs as quickly as possible but definitely don't really want to go into $100k debt while not working. I'm contacting the local airport flight school (actually there are three there, including ATP). At the very least, I think I'm going to go with that more flexible route to get my PPL as we roadmap out how to deal with the career change and early on, major income cut.

thanks for the advise. I’m trying to do this taking care a family and don't want to get in debt. had to stop with 17 hours because of finances . I'm not giving up, just flying using a simulator I built which was advise my flight instructor .

If you use a loan to pay for flight school full time that’s 100% okay. You get it done quicker, stay up to date on skills, and get to the career phase faster. No need to take 5 years with three jobs to pay for training. If you want to do this then do it. You’ll pay that 90k debt off quick in this profession. Just look at it as the small price you’ll pay for a lifetime of flying

Hello, I'm after considering part 61 flight school as the courses itself is a lot cheaper my concern is having to pay alot of rental hours in between courses for example PPL to instruments to meet XIC and PIC minimums. can you please advice how many hours did you need from ppl - instruments and instruments to commercial ? thank you

I go to a part 61 and got my commercial check ride august, I got 265 hrs and I spent $70k-$80k so far so it’s NOT always a good case for everyone! I went to a messed up school and had to switch my first 2 instructors. I had done perfect solo at 50 hours and the second instructor didn’t let me solo again for another 55 hours…… that’s when I decided to switch and I got ready for my solo, xc solo and check ride in 15 hours after I switched 😮

When becoming a pilot or getting a private pilot's licence, do you need to have done physics in school or know much if anything about it or do they teach you everything at flight school? I'm just very dumb so I was curious.
I just want to fly a cessna for recreational. That's my only goal.
I’ve always wanted to do this however I’ve developed a disability over the years where I’m neurologically ultra sensitive to artificial lights so I won’t be able to look at anything digital when flying a plane :(

As a new person entering ATP program next year, to get all 4 ratings, what positions would you recommend I look at pursuing after finishing the program. I ultimately want to become a commercial pilot for the big airlines which I know requires 1500 hrs
In that case look into working for a regional airline such as PSA, Envoy, Piedmont the mayor airlines are always going to pick pilots who worked for the regional over anyone else.

I’m looking into transferring into a university school of aviation to get my degree in aviation and learn how to fly but was infromed by most students there to get your private pilot license before u go in as u are allowed many more hours a week
I can attest to being a student at a 141 school and so far in Private I've had 3 CFIs so far not counting the replacements when they haven't been there ! Now they want me to leave the school, because in on a visa and they need the spot for students that go fast. Bullshit

Your video gave me insight. My son is a high school senior and is now trying to figure out what path to take. He has no flying experience, but he also wants to get his college degree. we are concerned about the extreme cost.. Should he start with a local club first?
I would say get try to get his PPL (Private Pilot license) in a local flight school. The school year just started so the goal should be to get it before he graduates.
Encourage him to apply to as many scholarships as possible. This is his chance to get free money. During this time look at all the options, colleges like ERAU cost a fortune. But maybe he can go to a different collage. Make sure the college is accredited by the FAA this will reduce his hour requirement to start working for an airline. Here’s the link to the list

My son wants an aviation career also, and we are located in Wisconsin. Google aviation mechanics technical college. The technical colleges are alot more affordable and you might have one closer than you think. ( cuts down on housing costs)

Depends on where they are. Did you do something really stupid and get a face or high neck tattoo? Yeah, probably not going to get in. If it's on your arms or somewhere easily covered, probably not a problem.

Number two is why ATP is awful for non private pilots. The instructors are all there to get their hours quickly. It can be tough when you are starting out needing a lot of help. 100k+ you'd think a lot more was offered.
I agree! I’ve heard horror stories about ATP.
