This is truly amazing. My 7 year old is quality (cat 1 academy), but he is small and so scared of contact and getting hurt. I’ve spoken to so many coaches about how to coach the bravery and had no other response than give him time! He’s going to be doing these drills week in week out now! I coach his grassroots team so can get it in to those training sessions. Thank you so much, absolute gold.
Thanks Paul, unfortunately we know this all too well! Lots of kids are told to “wait till they get bigger/stronger” meanwhile you see 5 year olds that aren’t afraid to tackle! Makes no sense eh! If you ever need anymore help, my personal email ben@catalansoccer.com Get in touch any time!
@@CatalanSoccer I really appreciate that, thank you. This will be an amazing case study, honestly. He has a lot of competitiveness but in a game scenario there’s always someone else who can cover or put in the block. In 1v1 drills there’s nowhere to hide and the only times I see the desire, but the fear of contact is always there. Introducing contact in that controlled way is going to be so helpful. If it doesn’t work we’re focusing on golf 😂
Great stuff. I have already implemented some of your stuff into my training sessions. Definently could use this one with my more timid players. Keep up the good work.
I'm going to work on this with my son. His coaches just scream at him and don't seem to understand its his confidence and tell him he needs to toughen up. He is such a skillful player and he knows it his weakness but this is going to really help, thanks.
As a new coach, coaching a U8 team. This an amazing video, I have some that are very shy to make any contact with anyone. I will be using this to get them just not to be afraid to make contact. Thank you very much.
Very, very good advices, haven't seen any videos like this that teaches the young players how to defend. It's something that's not fancy, not involving scoring goals, however an essential skill that required to play football.
Great video. It is not so easy. Some people/kids have it and some unfortunately don't. But I am going to show it to my son (and steal some exercises) in hope to strengthen the message I repeat to him every single day since he was 3. Now he is 8 and maybe start getting it somehow. Again, unfortunately some people/kids got it and some don't.
Hey mate, this video is awesome. My lad however will just not tackle! He runs alongside the players uses his body a bit, but gets out muscled or will just not put his foot in, to try and win it. How do I increase his confidence?
Hi Michael, it can take time to increase the confidence. But stick with practices like these. Another Avenue to explore is physical training like rugby, martial arts, boxing etc. Nothing where he’s going to get hurt, but something that can improve his physicality and help him see that using your body is safe and can help him succeed. Even playing with you, wrestling throwing each other around. I tend to find that siblings are usually more robust than an only child because they’ve had that play experience of grappling, fighting, being thrown around more than a kid who grew up alone or with a big age difference to their siblings.
I'm not kid I'm actually 18 yo and i fear and never tackle I've grown up as RW but since I had massive height growth I'm now 6'4 I can't play Rw anymore i switched to CDM cuz im pretty good at defending but tackling is my weakness that made me stay in the bench. I hope u can make one for older players cuz i can't overcome it
Fantastic video. Definitely using this during our winter sessions. Battling doesn’t come naturally to many players.
Tried this tonight in training with my least aggressive players. They loved it and got fully stuck in. Great coaching exercises.
Amazing to hear!! Great work!

I'm a coach and my lad is the same. Great with the ball at hit feet but doesn't like contact at all!
Same. Have you tried this yet?

this is absolutely brilliant, thanks!!
Absolutely loved this break down of a ‘ tackling ‘ session , this will be getting used to help our more timid players with plenty of encouragement 👏
Let us know how it goes!
Thank you for this video, given me some ideas
Great, wish I'd trained like this when I was a kid

Stick with it Dan, you’d be amazed the difference in kids between 8-11 years old on these traits!
Are you in England?
Really good drills we will implement in our under 10s
Thank you! Really appreciate the support!
