I remember people acting like this was out of character for Steven but like, even earlier on in the show, Steven has reacted in anger and violence when he feels unheard/upset (punching the car and activated the airbag, breaking a plate, and a handful of scenes where he let's his anger take control, shouting at his "mom", arguing with Garnet). We've also seen him shutting out people or internalizing things a LOT (episode where the Gems tested Steven, mindful education, Steven trying to cut Connie off, his self sacrificing behavior). Things were "okay" back then because he still felt attached to his support system, but here he's detached and slipping, unable to use those unhealthy coping mechanisms anymore
Why I love Steven Universe: Future is why some people hate it: that it actually, in depth, examines the effects and fallout of everything that's happened to him, realistically (I mean, granted with all the weird stuff). And so relatable in so many ways to so many people. I think some people get upset because we were all a bit... we bought into this light children's cartoon and this is the final stages of going 'no, Steven is a person.'
Problem with future is they don't do it properly, Steven having PTSD is almost never brought up in the show or movie he's literally in happily ever after and a few months later now he suddenly traumatized it's not like there was a big time skip it's probably like 3-5 months after the movie so it comes out of nowhere kinda and also the ending was terrible I overall liked future but some episodes tried to give characters conclusions or development like the lapis episode and stuff with Sadie and lars or even the Greg backstory is all interesting stuff but they just shoved it in one episode and it took away from telling Steven's story fully

"Aren't I reliving all the horrible things that have ever happened to me? A gem I barely know is trying to kill me. I'm being blamed for stuff my mom did which has NOTHING TO DO WITH ME. I'm struggling with my powers, the world's about to end, what piece could I be missing? This is the story of my life!" he's clearly exhausted and frustrated. plus, need i remind you, things started breaking down in future after his friends started leaving and he stopped managing little homeschool. he's in such a good mood at the beginning of the movie because he hasn't confronted any of his problems yet. his friends are all still with him, and he has structure to his life. everything comes crashing down in future when he loses his structure and is forced to confront how truly messed up his life is. steven didn't just magically become traumatized in future, he's shown numerous times to be traumatized in the original show. i can point to like a million examples of this.
i think they did it right, but everyones a bit different. my trauma and hurt all caught up to me pretty quickly like Steven's but even so rewatching the show you can see many moments steven starts to bottle emotions or go thru it
@@mukuroikusaba7347 the movie and future are actually like 2 years in the future so there's a lot of time for his trauma to catch up with him, not everyone experiences PTSD the same and sometimes it just randomly catches up with you all at once.
These episodes are so tough to get through. With the original series we knew that everything was building up to a big heroic conclusion, but here we just want our boy to be ok, and that's so much more stressful. I'm really excited for the change your mind cover! It's such a short piece in the original, but so powerful, too.

White's shown to not actually have moved at all when the connection was broken, so I always took it as Steven actually slamming his head into the column instead of White. edit: after rewatching, yeah I dont think White was ever in any real danger, because the scene is framed with Large Steven representing White Diamond and Small White representing Steven; and LS was shown to be the one who the broke the upper column while SW was shown slamming their head.
I don't think he would have been able to just from hitting her head on the pillar. Diamonds are and extremely strong type of gem, so it would take a lot of extended force and pressure to even crack them, let alone break them apart. I don't think even Bismuth's weapon would have been enough (though she thought it was).
That was the implication, but I don’t think he would have actually succeeded in shattering her with that. The pillar would’ve collapsed first before that happened. Still though, the intention was clearly there and it’s still rather upsetting.
Blue Diamond really said ‘damn Steven that’s crazy, want a hit of this blunt?’ 😂 Jokes aside, it’s neat how the diamond’s powers represent the different forms of treatment, you can treat the physical symptoms or take medication, but those won’t make the problem itself go away without therapy, and therapy won’t be helpful unless you’re emotionally ready for it, or if you don’t feel safe in that environment. What Steven is going through is unfortunately really common in kids who grew up having to be emotionally responsible for their parents (which I would say Steven definitely was), he is now *terrified* that his only worth as a person comes from being *useful.* All the times he solved the gems’ problems for them it accidentally enforced in his child brain that helping them is what made him valuable to them. Now as an adult he’s got it in his head that if he can’t help, or god forbid makes things worse, he’s not worthy of love 😢
By entering my psyche, he saw the very thing he had never fathomed come to life He saw himself as his mother, he saw himself as a Diamond and with the temper she had he has learnt about, it spiralled him into a depression after giving so much joy and care to those who once even tried to defeat him.
To me, Steven is like the inverse of pink diamond to rose. I feel like at the beginning of the series he’s more like Rose or who pink was trying to become, (a good person) and by the end he has tantrums like pink diamond did

She had a more childish demeanor for sure, but that translated into every aspect of her personality. Her tantrums were not an inherent braininess so much as they were cries for recognition and validation. She was suppressed for being silly, isolated for not following homeworld's rules, and her status was invalidated. She hated herself because she felt that her core defining trait (her curious and playful nature) was a horrible flaw not fit for a Diamond. That is why she threw tantrums. She stopped when she hurt Pink Pearl during a spiral, just like Steven hurt Jasper.

It’s funny how not everyone noticed Rebecca made the Sapphire in Peridot’s class already looking towards the door cause she predicted/knew he would walk in, so she wasn’t fazed 😭 She simply knew while no one else did lol
It's interesting to see how the diamonds are repurposing their powers like Pink did with rose. Pink had destructive powers and can break things and then she can heal cracked gems, revive organic life and create/augment. Yellows were destabilizing the form now reconstruct and Blue destabilized the emotions now stabilizing. White was controlling and destroying people's sense of self now she's doing....projecting? Steven represents the first step I of healing (like with cracked gems but not shattered). Believing that it's possible to be better (the heart or drive to change as represented via Pinks leg ship).
I think the white diamond thing was very interesting in how many ways it could be interpreted. They made it so he looked into himself and he could only see all the horrible doubts and thoughts he's internalised about himself as a half diamond from all the situations he was hurt by them. It's like he hates himself so much at this point and has all these horrible narratives about himself, and he's so afraid to turn out like the diamonds used to be, that his own head is not a safe space for him anymore. People will often tell you you're going to get better if you just love yourself and meditate looking at your thoughts, but it has to be understood it can be very difficult or even dangerous for people who went through really horrible stuff and don't have that many positive inner coping mechanisms to hold on to while attempting this. It can take a long healing journey to even be able to begin feeling comfortable with oneself like that and for meditation to start helping from there. It's very cool overall how well they shown in this episode that trauma can totally be a complex combo of mental and physical issues and there isn't a single thing like physical exercises or meds or mindfulness that can fix it, sometimes people need complex approach to work through stuff over time, and sadly very often they struggle to receive that from the medical care system looking for quick fixes only.
They have to bring Steven Universe back!! Of course when and if Zach ever decides to come back, mental health is much more important. No one could ever replace him as Steven!💗

In Steven Universe Future, when Steven started acting more childish, losing control of his powers and having outbursts of rage, I thought the reason for that was the attack with the rejuvenator scythe, and that attack had caused Steven's gem part to returns to Pink Diamond's Childish phase.
