Glad to see you're finally up to the Season 1 finale and that you enjoyed it. Part of why the finale feels like it wraps things up so nicely is because "Steven Universe", throughout its run, was always at risk of cancellation. Every season was potentially the show's last (including the midseason finale of "Mirror Gem" and "Ocean Gem"), which is still crazy to me considering how good the show is. I love the Garnet reveal because it's one of the things that really got me to see just how well-written this show is from a continuity and foreshadowing standpoint. There are so, so many hints in earlier episodes to Garnet being a fusion, some obvious and others more subtle. One of my favorites is when the Gems are teaching Steven how to fuse in "Alone Together" and Garnet remarks that fusing isn't hard for her. The writers knew from the start that Garnet is a fusion and wrote the entire show with that in mind. The reveal of Garnet being a fusion is completely logically consistent with everything we've seen before. It contradicts nothing and actually helps make sense of a lot of details, like her three eyes. It is exactly what a well-planned and executed reveal should be. And as the show progresses, this is something that will continue to happen, big reveals that have been foreshadowed for seasons beforehand. It is things like this that set SU above other TV shows in my opinion. They aren't just making these things up as they go along. This is a children's cartoon that knows its story and keeps better track of its continuity than most "adult" dramas ever do. I hope you do continue to enjoy the show on the level of a fun cartoon, because it is one. But you're now entering the part of the show where the writing starts to really pick up in terms of lore and continuity. And I hope you enjoy how well SU executes that stuff too. I do hope that you'll be able to rewatch this show someday, or at least parts of it. Because then you'll really see just how deep that continuity and attention to detail go. There are so many things in earlier episodes that mean so much more after having seen the show.
I see why people like to rewatch Steven Universe so much now! I love a show with good writing and continuity and this show has it in spades! Knowing that there are big reveals in the future makes me so excited to continue watching!

And SU is a show with a lot to talk about. At least for me, it's kinda crazy how far in advance they planned things out despite having no guarantee they'd ever get enough episodes to get this far.
This right here is why the show is so insanely rewatchable, and why so many people like to watch SU reactions, you notice new things and think about it more deeply each time.
@@joaosilva1529i dont know if you watched the show as it aired, but I remember the bigger debate in the fandom was around the theiry if garnet being a fusion. The reveal was a genuine surprise at the time
The clues have been there since the beginning, even before the concept of fusion was shown on the show. Garnet has two gems, one on each hand. What you thought has her gem splitting was both her gems dropping after Garnet was poofed. Garnet also uses two gems to open the temple door. There are five colored spots on the door: Pink for Rose Quartz, Purple for Amethyst, White for Pearl, and RED and BLUE for Garnet.
Garnet also plays a keytar in "Steven and the Stevens", a FUSION between a keyboard and a guitar. There's even the moment in "Fusion Cuisine" where, if you go frame-by frame as Alexandrite is splitting, you can see the silhouettes of Ruby and Sapphire nearly split apart before reforming into Garnet before they can even hit the ground.
Yep they did give Jasper pronouns in the episode ("Are you gonna be able to beat her on your own?"). (Interestingly, they DIDN'T use any pronouns for Ruby in this episode, but they eventually used she and her for Jasper and Ruby in other episodes.) Part of the reason the Garnet reveal works so well is that we don't really know the rules about Gems at this point! We don't know they wouldn't typically have three eyes etc. Plus Garnet doesn't share some of the traits other Fusions have so far--like, she doesn't combine two weapons to use the weapon she fights with, and she only has two arms, and she's not ginormous (just the large end of human-size). They did a great job in the show seeding the secrets so some people would figure it out and other people wouldn't and both would have fun!
It definitely is one of the best reveals I've seen in the show so far! When the first season was premiering did anybody theorize Garnet being a fusion was the case before the finale or was it something that took everyone off guard?
@@SputnikSpyglass Tons of people theorized it and tons of people had strong opinions that it couldn't be true or thought it would ruin the show or her character if it was. Some thought it made no sense since she didn't use a blended weapon and wasn't super giant. But others felt it was the only thing that explained her having two gems and some of her actions/reactions earlier in the show. The REASON she would stay fused wasn't really guessed ahead of time though.
Quick gem facts in the wake of Garnet's fusion reveal: both rubies and sapphires are made of the same mineral, corundum. So what are garnets made of? Well, a quick google says they're made of multiple minerals. A fusion of them, if you will. And it happens when sedimentary rocks get exposed to *heat and pressure* that make them *metamorphose*.
The Message is actually a really important episode. It shows how the Gems have been using archaic, outdated technology while the Gems out in space have been continuously progressing for thousands of years. The message being far too advanced for the wailing stone is what caused it to go haywire.

You have no idea how badass this was back in the day when the show released! 😊 This episode has aired in many counties in the world that had LGBT+ themes still banned on the TV (some of them still do), thanks to the way Rebecca has structured the show. This included my country effectively becoming the first instance of openly not straight characters in kids animated shows in the local TV. I've guessed it a while ago before that but I was screaming anyway coz it felt unbelievable that they actually made it the official canon. 😂 Even USA cartoon network was reluctant to give it a green light back then but Rebecca made it happen and it's opened the way for so many people to follow that change up in the animated media. How cool is that!
15:00 They aren't necessarily progressing at a faster rate than we are, they just have a major head-start. They already had space travel when they came to this world 6000 years ago, after all. If it took them that long to go from audio to video, that's a lot slower than us, actually hahaha. But more likely they have advanced to the point of the audio and video signals being combined, which could be why the pure audio tech couldn't process it.
Ok combined audio/video signals are a pretty cool concept. And yeah I forgot the gems have been on earth for thousands of years now. I can't wait to see what other tech the home world gems have!
Even today audio and audio+video can just be different formats. What's more implausible to me is that running some alien signal thru a few audio effects would decode it, so the whole thing is kind of a big hand wave anyway. Which, I like things tidy but it's fine. It's like something you'd see in a 1980s kids/family movie, like a bunch of kids building a spaceship out of junk.
44:20 bit of foreshadowing here! Ruby said that she “can’t see”, because being a part of Garnet, she’s used to having Sapphire’s future vision to rely. Being unfused, she loses that ability, and so in this desperate situation to reunite with the other gems, she was in a panic forgetting without Sapphire she couldn’t use Future Vision to gauge where the others were.
The puppy appearance to snuggle and the fact that you allowed the snuggles did my day sobs The whole reaction was great and fun to see! But someone must comment about the adorable puppy too 💘
You're right!! It's just been a while and I'd forgotten. I think them not having a concept of gender added to a little bit of self projection in me using they/them pronouns
Remember all the times that they show Garnet's palms? The fact that Sugalite's major arms have 2 gems, combined with Amethyst's belly gem? Two of Alexandrite's 6 arms had 2 gems too. The Crewniverse was foreshadowing her fusion status the entire time.
So as for the upcoming seasons, they are half as long, but they kept with the original plan for the pacing: so essentially what would have been the mid-season finale of the next season became the finale of season 2, and what would have been the season finale became the finale of season 3. This is why it became a problem when they didn’t get a 6th season, they had to squish the originally planned final season in half so it could all fit in season 5 instead of 5+6. 😢
Haha, yeah!!! When I first started watching Steven Universe I was like, "This is pretty good. If granny nanefua and onion had the same age they would be best friends lol
I've already watched the Garnet react 4x kkkkkk so good
Actually I haven’t thought of this since garnet is actually a fusion this whole time does this mean fusions can fuse?
It does indeed!
i mean alexandrite would already be 3 gems fused (if garnet was just one)
My gemsona is moonstone. My birth stone is pearl/moonstone. That actually fits because people would say im most like pearl lol.
Indi being Pearl fr:

All of the gems have she/her pronouns. The ones ones that don't are fusions that include Steven.
Gotcha!

@ultradeathboy Smoky uses they/them, Sunstone uses she/they, and Rainbow 2.0 uses he/they according to the Steven Universe wiki.
