I have 3 dreads. So far I love them. I installed my black husband’s locs 5 years ago, and my sons 2 months ago. I’ve loved the look since I was a kid and the beautiful hippy ladies inspired me with their free energy and style. Just like everywhere around the world has braids, everywhere also has locs. These internet trolls mean nothing in real life, and I GUARANTEE are upset by a lot of other shxt. 😬🤣. Be the you that you feel and see within, regardless of other’s objections. Do not set yourself on fire to keep others warm.

I respect you, and believe you do have a right to get locs but some respect to those who made it popular in the "hippy" movement was appreaciated, it was bob marley it was the rastafri movement and it was people in the carribean, the appropriation of this life style which is completly fair and i would even motivate it but just remebering the history is important.

When it comes to Locs ive been doing my own and others since 2006. I am not a professional but my mother is going on 40yrs and counting. I do specialize in natural haircare though! With maintenance and having the locs stay in longer for you no matter your choice of method, you can spray a half and half mix of ACV and water in a spritz bottle on your hair to cleanse it a few times a week. It needs to be dry to be able to have the chance to loc so having the finished twists in a secure prtective style for atleast a week helps when you have straighter texture hair! I am not a professional when it comes to hair, but my mother is a professional and has been for over 40 years and counting! Happy Locing everyone ❤❤❤❤❤❤

Years ago, I put 50 little braids in my hair. Someone suggested interlooping to tighten them up. I tried it. Major ouch when I finally took the braids out. Thanks for sharing all these methods with us Liz!!!❤️
So I've been researching this for over a month and have learned more from you than all the other channels, though I appreciate the info I got from them as it's all part of the journey. We only have one dreadlock artist in the valley and I'm really having to work to encourage him to do my hair I can share this video with him and see if he is more receptive to doing my hair. If not, I'll just have to do it myself. I'm 65 and I can tell you if I were younger, I'd want to become a dreadlock artist myself. You've really encouraged me to keep moving forward. okay okay Im also not a professional but if anyone is considering using twist n rip method you do it like that: you make sections of hair then you take one section of the hair twist it 2 times!!! and then you rip it... Liz showed it in a wrong way but there is no problem we are all learning ❤ thank you Liz for showing me different methods 🤍❤

I've been wanting to start my Loc Journey for a few years now.. but I didn't want to be looked down on or degraded, just because I'm a Caucasian/Native American Woman🙃💁🏼♀️ but for the past few months, I've REALLY been thinking about it heavily, and I think I'm getting closer to being comfortable enough to start them!!
I know everyone starts theirs for their own personal reasons...
Personally, I want to start mine because when I'm doing my hair, it takes a good amount of time, and that extra time I spend on my hair could be put to better use, like spending time with my family, my babies, my husband, my Daddy.. I just want to be able to focus more time on my family, friends(the very few I have lol), just my life in general.

freeformer here. it took me about 4-5 years. i loved this process. i was able to control the end result quite a bit by separating the dreads as life went on. the third pro for this method is painless. after now getting my hair tidied up professionally (i have crazy curly hair and my baby hair wreak havoc on my dreads as they've stopped naturally locking), I had no idea how much it can hurt when you go somewhere to get your dreads seen too. OMG

I never recommend interlocking for straight hairs.
My favorite is to back comb then crochet.

Leave it to me to have insomnia at 3am and spend almost an hour making one single crochet dread in my hair. But hey, it’s not too bad for my first dread literally ever and if I was able to do it just from watching this video that’s pretty cool. No way in hell I could do my whole head by myself, but definitely makes me appreciate actual dreadlock artists and how much time that does actually take. Though I’m sure it wouldn’t take a pro almost an hour for only one lock. I was being extra careful so not to break hair and I had no idea what I was doing…..but I crochet and have hooks sooooo…….
thanks for this great and detailed guide. i had a good 13 years dreadlocks and lost it in 2020 after chemotherapy, now the hair is long enough again and I am looking for a possibility without gel, wax and the like. . i find your method with crocheting best and I'll test it for a while. . thanks for the great video . . your hair look great 👍
Great explanations! My first set was 100% freeform. Loved watching them form, but I ended up being unhappy with how thick they were, especially the ends. Latest set was started with twist n rip, then I experimented with back comb and crochet. I liked that so much better, that I undid most of the tnr dreads and redid with back comb / crochet. Sectioning was grab and go, but it’s since been fixed by a loctician, though she said it was mostly pretty good😊.
Your videos have been helpful leading up to me getting my dreads. I thought I started my loc journey last July, but because my fine wavy texture hair, my hair wasn't taking to loc, and the salon I was going to was only interlocking. I have found a new salon and the girl is fixing my locs with a crochet needle.
I used to want dreads so badly when I was a teenager . I never did it though and now I don’t want to anymore but the twist and rip was really hard to watch 😂😂😂 same with the back comb . I have very fine hair and I could easily see mine turning into one big dread

I don't maintain my roots, (mostly because they are at the back and I can't see them) but I can use my crochet hook to tidy up further down on the dreads if needed. Crochet all the way for me..... The thing I love most about dreads is that there are so many ways to go about having them, caring for them and everyone can do what is best for them!

Love this video,I've had my dreads for almost 7 years,I started mine with backcombing and twist and rip,it took around a year for them to mature and it definitely taught me patience lol,but I couldn't imagine not having my dreads now Def the best decision I've ever made for my hair,and I wouldn't recommend interlocking as it causing alot of damage and weak spots at the root and with twist and rip u only wanna twist each stand about 3 times then pull up and repeat until u reach the end of that strand,if u twist to much they turn out looking twisted instead of dread like lol,ty so much I'm loving this new channel girl..💜✌😁

To anyone thinking about the neglect method, I recommend watching progress videos before starting the process. It's good to see how dreads tend to form and how long, so watch a few different ones on a few different hairtypes. Having that knowledge was a life saver for me, as the first year or so of locking is ROUGH. It's not uncommon to want to give up halfway through, but I promise they will lock and look nice and neat eventually.
If you have a habit of combing your fingers through your hair, this method might not work for you. I do it with my bangs by habit, so I had to create locs on my bangs to get them started and out of my face so I stop fiddling with them.
My locs (minus my bangs) are at about 2 years and 3 months from day one of neglecting my hair. My first locks started forming after about 5 months or so. I never had the pain and scalp issues using this method. Dandruff is annoying, but I use essential oils mixed with olive oil on my scalp to help with that between washes. Use it sparingly. I do it, maybe, once a month at most. For washing, I slowly made my way to weekly washes (originally, I attempted working towards monthly washes because I had slightly outdated info). Since you don't have the spongey locks right away with this method, you can still wash/wet it more frequently at first without concerns about mildew. Once locks form, though, you need to be careful with wetness.
For more specific context on my dreadlock journey, I have curly celtic hair. My locks formed fairly quickly. I tigh my hair up almost all day every day, and it didn't stop the locking. I was nervous that it would while doing it. I also made sure to let my hair down while driving in nice weather with the car windows down to help my hair knot up.
Definitely watch videos on neglect method locks from people with your hair type.
In case anyone sees my locks: full disclosure, I blunted my by cutting off my random loose hairs at the bottom of my locks. Those didn't lock into them.

I did do my own dreads with crochet technique and it does take so much practice but I have gotten a lot better, sometimes I cheat and interlock to tighten close to roots

mine actually started different, i put in extensions (braided my two inch long hair around them) and left those in for a couple months. when they came out, the hair under the extensions had matted into baby dreads. then i just let it go from there! they are down to my butt now lol

Anyway Lizz, awesome video. I love using the crochet method you use, I've heard it called a basket stitch too. Once I learnt it, I found it really easy to maintain my own dreads with it. Unfortunately since I have fine flyaway (but thick) hair and mine weren't created with the crochet method, my root maintenance is pretty regular because the fluffies are insane when I wash mine.

My dad @ 69 decided he wants to do dreads in his hair. For the last wk 0 days I have been trying to teach myself how to dread 😂 (how I reached ur pg) Thank u so much for making this. So far I agree the hook method has been the best for me. I do have a silly question typically how many dreads should a person have. Hello, i did crochet dreads a while ago with back combing first and yes it took me a whole month to do my full head 😅 now the thing is that as my hair grew, my locks got thiner at the top and the thickness were at the bottom due to starting them back combed, is there a way to avoid that ? Since back combing thicken them.. Thanks loads ❤
what if you have short hair? Can you do the crochet method? Do you add hair to make them a good length? I have used temporary dreads and I really want to have real dreads, but my hair is short.

Got another way. Install synthetic dreadlocks and just leave them in. I had mine in for about 3 months and my actual hair had started to dread by the time i took the synths out. I did end up combing them all out but if you wanted to have nice looking dreads right away while you wait for your real hair to dread up thats one way to do it I guess. Might be a pain to get the synths out once they get too long but I mean it is one way to do it. lol

So I am the pastiest of pasty white people, but I have wavy-loose curly hair, and I did the comb twists on accident. I was trying some over night methods to even out my curls (cuz one side of my head is curlier than the other) and I twisted my hair in on itself with just my fingers when wet and while they didn't do what I wanted them to, out of curiosity I left them, took care of them, wore my bonnet at night, and they stayed for several days looking nice in my texture of hair. Personally I want versatility in my hair, so I like the ability to wash them out, at least for this stage in my life. Maybe some day I'll properly lock up my hair but if you're looking for a less permanent method for fine hair I have really liked learning to do this method.
(Keep in mind, my hair is not straight, so that might be why it works, if your hair is very straight it might not work. I also didn't use product at first, I just washed my hair and put them in wet. But a gentle curling cream does definitely help keep them nice for longer)

Another question: Ik have made dreads in my hair (rip, backcomb, twist, crochet, palmroll) and extended them with synth. extensions. When they are locked to my hair I test the connection to pull on them and the lock is really tight. But every other day one of them just falls out. How is that possible? Wat can I do to prevent that? I have not washed my hair for 2 weeks now.

Oh man I wish I would of seen this years ago. I didn't know how to do the crochet hook thing that well when I did my dreads and pretty much was way too rough and m you hair got really short when I took my dreads out... I cried. But I'm not doing it again up until I figure it out better lol

I've been trying to loc my hair for about 3 months 2 different places money and time very bad experience.
There is only one gal where I live in Montana that does maintenance on dreads, that is good! I am half asian so I have straight hair. My dreads are long, just about past my butt. She does the interlocking on my roots. I will ask if she can crochet or I might have to just crochet them after she linterlockes them. At least most of the work will be done and I can just to touch up. I wish so badly I lived by you!

I went to some dude and he used the crochet method to bottom part of my hair, and did not realise how long my hair was going to take. He then pursued to braid the rest of my hair (I wanted thin dreads) and only crocheted the ends and the start of each braid. I must also mention that my hair was not parted and now almost in week two I am regretting this journey because some strands of one section of hair is in another section of hair. As if my hair was not properly separated while doing the dreads. Now I don't know what to do. Please advise

I JUST got dreads 2 days ago. They did a interlocking/comb back method and palm rolling.. but the Knotty Boy wax balm they used feels terrible. There is so much wax from my hair everywhere! They said I shouldn't wash my hair for a month and continue to use the wax every 3-4days and palm roll every day. Does this sound right? I hate the wax haha
If your hair is interlocked, you can wash your scalp, maybe not your actual dreds. (I’m not a pro, just a dred head) and if you don’t like the product, there are so many great ones out there❤ there’s no right or wrong way to go about your dred journey, they’re your dreds, feed them what works for you 🎉 personally, I love using a hand roll/crochet technique to maintain and lock new growth. Your dred journey should bring you joy my friend, don’t be afraid to switch it up 😊
Ah.. I had free form then twist n rip and a bit of backcombing. Downside I didnt get sectioned as covid started and wasnt able to get my freind to do. I had for a year look good but the mss at the roots was to annoying and painful I tried to redo hear n there.. in the end I brushed it alk out!! Gutted I want them back now but It took so long.. was ok as I was furloughed at home I had the time to do it.. maybe 1 day.. id like to pay someone to do properly 😊
So I have a question. Are my dreads supposed to feel, scratchy? They're not soft and they really don't bend so I'm left with almost no ways to do them other than a blank boring pony tail. Help Liz Kidder!
Hi Lina! Brand new crocheted dreadlocks will certainly feel stiff/scratchy. As they mature they *should* soften up over time. They will always be a little dryer/scratchier than “normal” hair and that’s something you should get used to. BUT if they’re extremelyyyyyy dry/brittle (like my bleached hair) then you could use an oil on them to try to hydrate/soften. OF if you have synthetic dreadlocks they might always stay stiff/scratchy. Hope this helps!

I have rat tail dreads. I used a mix of different methods to dread my hair. I used wax for the maintenance because I am Mongolian and Russian mix so I have more Asian texture hair so actually the wax helps my dreads. I don’t suggest using wax with very thin hair. I would say to use the best method for your hair because everyone has different hair

If you have textured hair and do the twist method your hair should not come out loose when you wash it.
