ABC Cinema Wakefield DAYS LATER IT WAS DEMOLISHED ;-(

  • The Regal Cinema was designed by Associated British Cinemas(ABC) in-house architect William R. Glen, and opened on 9th December 1935. It has a town centre location on Kirkgate at the corner of Sun Lane facing into, and visible from, the town centre.
Not as large as some later ABC houses the Regal Cinema accommodated 1,594 but had a full stage 26 feet deep behind the 43 feet wide proscenium. The interior was rather plainer than many of Glen’s cinema designs with concealed lighting under the balcony and at the rear of the ceiling and pendant fittings casting light upwards towards the front of the cinema.
It was renamed ABC in 1962 and became a triple operation from 11th November 1976 with screen 1 seating 532 in the balcony using the original screen and projection suite and screen 2 (236 seats) and 3 (170 seats) in the rear stalls area.
It was taken over by Cannon Cinemas chain in April 1986, and was renamed Cannon. It closed in 1997 as the ABC following the Cineplex multi-screen cinema opening in December 1996 and has been empty and ‘For Sale’. A covenant restricting its use to film exhibition has been the reason the site has not been redeveloped or alternative uses found for the ever deteriorating building. The building was acquired by Wakefield Council. In late-July 2021, despite protests, the Council passed a resolution that the building would be demolished.

What a shame I spent some great times in here at the ABC Minors in the 1950s on sat mornings also notice from the drone shots Chantry House has gone where I worked in the 1980s this is my home town but I live in East Yorks now and didn’t realise these had gone a big part of my life thanks for posting.

Such a shame that the OWNERS being Wakefield Council would do nothing to make this place look nicer and left it get toi such a state that the only option was to demolish it. Putting up gaudy green gauze blowing in the wind was probably done on purpose to make it look like a construction site. The holes in the roof looked created on purpose for the flooding of the building. Funny how this always seems to happen and a few sheets of plyboard and some plastic can never be found by councils... thgis would have kept the building dry. You would think the council would have access to this stuff. Hmmmm. Well sadly the building has bit the dust and by all accounts all that is going to replace this cinema is GRASS. Wonderful planning there. Lets get rid of 100 years of history for some grass.

I always wanted to see inside that theatre in its glory days, I’ve always liked the look of the building shame the markets now gone and there going to knockdown most of the ridings to modernise it, Wakefield council is the worst a lot like Kirklees, i would have loved to see it back to its former glory and been used what it was built for even if it was made so local dance and performances groups could use it. I’m from Wakefield as well they’ve ruined the town that’s why no elderly shop there my grandma won’t even go into Wakefield anymore only to catch bus to the hospital, she would rather get her friend to take her to Halifax for the market and Barnsley.

      @ncot_tech Před 2 lety +1

How about a conspiracy that if this building has a covenant that says it can only be used as a theatre, doing anything to reopen it would compete with the other theatre in town, and the big cinema in the retail park. So accidentally the desire to keep it only as a theatre has doomed it.

AirForce One was released on 12th September 1997 . Hunchback was released in July 19th1996 . Cineworld Wakefield opened in December 1996 so the management of the ABC circuit must have battled for 9 months to keep it open but to no avail .it did shut by October 1997.
It was converted into 3 screens in 1976
The main screen of 532 seats was in the balcony and it utilised the main projection screen within the proscenium..
Screens 2 and 3 were underneath the balcony with 236 and 170 seats respectively and a projection booth was constructed to cover both screens.
Digital projection was never used as this didn’t start to come in until 2004.
At 48.30 the side door you mention was constructed when the 2 auditoriums under the balcony were constructed . There is one on the other side.
Fire regulations dictated that you must have at least 2 fire exits from all auditoriums that were built when these 1930s single screen cinemas were doubled or tripled in the 70s.
Finally as this cinema was on its last legs , the cinema would have been equipped with Dolby Stereo ( Spectral being common ) with additional side speakers located in the proscenium grills and a couple on the back walls but none on the side walls .it probably was never upgraded to the DTS and SDDS sound systems which came out in the mid 90s
I could see no evidence of speakers that would have been fitted on the side walls had that been the case.
Also a lot of the electrical equipment ie rectifiers are pre 1976 conversion and were defunct . It’s more than likely was the equipment used when it was a theatre in the 60s

The downstairs projection room was built for screens 2 and 3 that were built in the stalls area under the circle in the 1970s. The upstairs was the original projection room and later used for Screen 1 which used the circle seating and original screen

Thanks for filming this! Really brings back memories. I watched so many horror films there in the early 1980s, by which time it was divided into three screens: the upper seating area for the big screen, and two smaller screens tucked away in what used to be the stalls. For any horror obsessives out there, here are a few of the films that played in 1981/82...
    1981
THE BROOD + ZOMBIES, DAWN OF THE DEAD (June)
THE FUNHOUSE + MY BLOODY VALENTINE (October)
    ALTERED STATES (October)
    DEAD AND BURIED (October)
    THE DEVILS (November)
    SCANNERS + SHUDDER (December)
    THE ELEPHANT MAN (December)
    EXORCIST 2: THE HERETIC (December)
    1982
LIFE OF BRIAN + AIRPLANE (January)
WOLFEN + EYES OF A STRANGER (January)
    ALIEN + THE FOG (January)
    THE BEYOND + SHOCK (January)
AN AMERICAN WEREWOLF IN LONDON (February)
    TOURIST TRAP (February)
    GHOST STORY (February)
    EATEN ALIVE (March)
HALLOWEEN 2 + THE ERRAND (March)
    CHRISTIANE F. (April)
THE FINAL CONFLICT + ALIEN (April)
    MAD MAX 2 (April)
ZOMBIE FLESH-EATERS (May - midnight show)
    ROSEMARY’S KILLER (May)
    BRITANNIA HOSPITAL (June)
    THE EXTERMINATOR (June)
    THE ELEPHANT MAN (June)
THE HOWLING + PROM NIGHT (July)
VISITING HOURS + ESCAPE FROM NEW YORK (July)
CITY OF THE LIVING DEAD (July)
    HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO ME (July)
    DEATH WEEKEND (August)
    POLTERGEIST (September)

So sad when you look back at the queues going down the street back in the 70's. We seem to be building things around the other way these days, in the past big shops, cinemas, swimming pools etc all used to be built in the heart of the community - in the towns themselves. With the housing radiating away around the towns with new estates etc. Now all the housing is being crammed into the centres, and all the big stores, cinemas and leisure centres are out on the outskirts.

@@TheSecretVault Aye, seems to be the general process these days, let it sit and rot for a decade or so and then use that as an excuse to not renovate.

Found videos from 2008 on YT on this place. I love these cinema video's and what amazing places, not like the boring cinema's we see nowadays being built.

Another thoroughly well done job and perfect timing 👌🏻 Such a shame this couldn't be repurposed but the council just want their business rates or council tax. Can't believe that nosey neighbor in the flat phoned the fuzz. It's being demolished so who cares. I'd have waved at you 😂😂😂 Honestly, some people!
