  • Shonen has changed a lot through the years. Stories evolved with time and characters changed too, especially protagonists. Nowadays the biggest battle shonen, like Jujutsu Kaisen, Chainsaw Man and My Hero Academia have very emotional and broken protagonists, very different from the ones that shonen used to have in the 90s.
    The question is how did they change and how this affected the evolution of shonen. Why is Denji so different from Goku and why is he so similar...to Shinji? Today we're gonna delve into the realm of shonen and try to understand how greats of the past like Berserk and Evangelion have influenced the modern protagonists, like Yuji, Deku and Denji.
    Enjoy.

    I like the idea that shonen manga always tries to create the perfect hero, but every era needs its own kind of hero and that's why they change so much throughout the decades

    Ok how exactly did Denji get grouped with these 2

    • @AndrewRowl
      @AndrewRowl  Před 2 měsíci +10

      They are the protagonists of the three most followed shonen at the moment, even though they are different they have things in common and I try to explain it in the video :)
      By the way the point of the video essay is not to say that the three of them are the same, but just trying to understand why they work, what they inherit from the past of manga and what's new and fresh about them

    Gonna be honest. You have not made your point in the video. What you have explained is how the newer generation is just a lesser quality of protagonists than the older gen. The aspects you mentioned such as under dogs and emotionally broken are common in all genres, with the exception of denji all the new gen mcs you mentioned dont sound unique at all

    • @AndrewRowl
      @AndrewRowl  Před 2 měsíci +2

      In my opinion the way mcs communicate their feelings has changed a lot compared to the Big 3 and previous shonen generations in general. Still, thank you for sharing your opinion as I love to use this comment space as a way to confront and debate
