      It's funny how it seems to me that a vast majority of actors and actresses who did an excellent job at impersonating excellently written villains/awful characters are often total cinnamon rolls in real life. Thus I hypothesized that maybe these roles are a sort of catharsis thing for these sweethearts. :)

      That was one of the brilliant, yet often overlooked, parts of Harry Potter; we could idenitfy with the teachers through ones we had when we were in school. It's a good bet each of us knew a Mcgonigall, the strict, no nonsence teacher who excelled at her job and cared for her students, and a Lupin; the teacher who was almost a friend, whose classes didnt feel quite like lessons yet you learned quite a lot anyway. Umbridge played on that teacher you 'knew' hated you, and seemed to enjoy picking on and punishing you. More than anything, its this manipulation of our own reminiscences which makes Umbridge the villain she is.

      Sauron deserves S tier based on LotR alone. The sad part is that people often mistake movie Sauron with book Sauron, and they are COMPLETELY different. In the books, the big S is not a flying eye, he does have a physical form even - just a lot weaker than he once was.
      Sauron is a looming threat, ever returning, turning friends into foes, allies into enemies. His influence by his words and malicious will is unparalleled. And yet, he is not an unbeatable force per se - he could not hope to defeat Numenor - a kingdom of mortals - in a straight fight, so he allowed them to capture him, and corrupted them from within - from prison no less. The last Alliance beat his armies, and himself, but his malicious will prevailed and influenced Isildur, bringing the human king his doom. Even at late 3rd era, the united forces of mortals of north-western Middle-Earth could've beaten him - it's just that they will not unite against Sauron this time.
      Even his eventual downfall didn't come to Sauron because he was too blind to see that someone would be able to destroy the Ring - because in fact, Sauron in his pride was actually right, that noone would be able to cast it into the fire of Mount Doom. He lost by an "accident", and judging by how improbable was the series of events that led to Gollum being present on mount doom to fall with the Ring, Eru Ilvuatar himself was probably involved.

      Yes, I felt the same way! He's not the best villain, but he does have a menacing presence in the books, and he's also more calculating. Especially when we see him as Tom Riddle. He scared me as a kid, but even now Tom Riddle in HBP creeps me out. The fact that a 16-year old was obssessed with trying to gain immortality was pretty unsettling. But in the movie he's very cartoonish, with over-exaggerated mannerisms, over-the-top laughter and yelling. He...didn't feel like the book Voldemort to me.

    And it's not just saving his son, Darth Vader sacrificed himself to do it. He no longer clung to the hate, rage, and survivalistic mentality of the Sith, he broke free in sacrificing himself to save his son because he finally had something good to live for. Especially what he accomplished that made him emperor of the entire galaxy. I really love Palpatine as a villain; however, he wasn't the smartest (here's why). When the rule of 2 was implemented, he knew his new apprentice had to kill him in order to continue the sith line. Palpatine was following the guide book like a good little sith lord, but then he got arrogant with his power after the jedi were almost all killed. This is where he thought leaving the sith agenda was good and boom, Anakin out here chucking that man into a space hole lmao. Not to mention, he was born into evil, Vader was turned (meaning Anakin will always be inside Vader, no matter how many people he killed)

    I recently reread Order of the Phoenix and the great thing with Umbridge is that... Well, even though she is 'just' a teacher, she makes the reader in the position of Harry feel powerless and unable to fight back. A villain should have the power to make the hero feel small, should seem like a huge challenge, and she does that really well. Voldemort... Well, Harry fought him so often and he never really did anything to him, it's almost comedic how often Harry faces him and gets away with it. For being "the darkest wizard of all time", that's weak. Losing against an 11, 12, 14, 15 anf 17 year old is... not that impressive.

      @Trisjack20 Před 4 lety +3

      I agree and I think the books actually do quite a lot of digging into Voldemort but allow him to remain mysterious as well which gives him a subtlety that many villains lack. Daniel even mentions he dislikes it when it is too blatant and maybe that is how he feels about Voldemortbut in the books at least I think he is not giving due credit.
      How many villains are able to manifest as 1- a parsite (As in Philosophers stone) 2- a memory (As in Chamber) 3- through a catspaw (As in Prisoner) 4- through their own resurection (As in the graveyard in Goblet) 5- without being present (As in phoenix such a frustrating and clever thing to persuade everyone he was not there but was) 6- as a terrirost (see half-blood) and finally as an occupying dictator (As in 7). The reveals as well from what people tell us of him or refuse to tell us, the memories of the diary, the journey's into the pensieve just such a clever constant hinting.
      I could make some interesting arguments for the Emperor and Vader too as with many big series the deeper you look into the characters the better you appreciate them as long as there is depth there. If you note all that Daniel can see in Ishamael because he is a massive WOT fan, others just see him as a guy in black who tries to kill Rand and never get into his philosophy or changing character or subtle manchinations.

    • @critica77y77
      @critica77y77 Před 3 lety +2

      Joffrey Baratheon could have a tiny bit of humanity deep down, I think, but if so, it's continually stifled by a combination of Cersei's coddling, Robert's constant absence, mental illness, and the fact that Joffrey just doesn't think he needs to improve himself. I'm not saying he's not an *extremely* bad person, because he definitely is, and I'm not even saying that he doesn't deserve to be hated as much as he is, because in the end, regardless of who we point the finger at to determine who's to blame, he's still a tyrant who needs to die for the sake of the realm. I'm not the kind of apologist who thinks we should give everyone a second chance at the expense of others. I'm just saying it's not surprising he ended up the way he did all things considered.

Each time she encountered him like in The Magician's Nephew and the next book where they first meet again, I felt anything could happen. It actually delivered with what happened later. Only the Black Rider of The Dark Is Rising Sequence equals that presence. There, it matches Arthur and the Lady both. Merlin is there, but when they meet, Merlin had no control. Rand and the Dark One are on a totally different level, of course.
