The most natural pure opinion I’ve heard about this song! Words may lie but facial expressions never do!! You were so deeply surprised ( should I say happily disappointed?) about this very Portuguese song that also carries strong roots from Africa and the cultural seeds we spread while discovering New Worlds.

Actually something interesting I've learned after making this video is that Bosnia has the same concept as Saudade and it has the same origin, we call it "Sevdah" and we have turned into a music genre of songs with that feeling of special melancholy. So I fully understand you 😇

We spent 50+ years without winning. We could not care less and that makes it easier to do our own thing as we have no expectations unlike a Sweden for instance. If we cared, Maro would not be there and she deserves it so much. Of course in 5 decades not all choices were perfect and one can’t please all tastes but no one can deny they were either (and/or) good, innovative, different, creative and even laughable. At least we are certainly not afraid to try.
In her presentation video, Maro revealed that she wrote "saudade, saudade" to remember her grandfather, who recently died. "It wouldn't make much sense not to be me singing such a personal theme", stressed the artist. Maro is the artistic name of Mariana Secca, from Lisbon, who grew up in a family environment marked by music, began studying piano at age four, attended the conservatory and studied at Berklee School in Boston, United States.

Just to add that this song was written by MARO and dedicated to her grandfather Who had just passed away. I really think that if people know that beforehand, it adds an even greater vibe and connection from the song to the listener. Just love this song ❤

Thank you so much . That is the point, the world needs peace and this nostalgic song is definitely a peace appealing song, very simple, very honest, very humble. It talks about feelings, about the sadness and emptiness that Maro is feeling about losing her best friend, her grandfather. No fireworks, no frantic dances, just herself, the audience, her grandfather and emotions. Very portuguese but universal at the same time.

«saudade» can be translated like «miss you», but it's not exactly this, it's a unique Portuguese word

It was taught to us Portuguese people since young age that a lot of people died several centuries ago, specially young people and kids, across Europe of course, not only in Portugal, because wars, hunger, illnesses, people had to deal with constant loss and pain... But when you bury the body you keep the memory alive like the graves where the bodies rest... But when the constant traveling across the sea of portuguese sailors, fathers and sons for months and years, that takes the certainty of where our loved ones are or if they are alive or dead... Not knowing the day those sailors and soldiers would come back to their families, if there was a come back, it took away that certainty from a lot of mothers and wives, grand parents, friends, children, including the memory, the finality and at the end their meaning of life... And that anguish and dispair that could crumble an entire people in pain until extinction, in the case of Portuguese people it changed into a bearable feeling... The sweet and addicted feeling of hope dressed in an eternal sadness: Saudade... And that turned out as a portuguese people identity and cultural expression, specially in the case of Fado music. Of course nowadays the term Saudade lost that primal meaning because times changed... But portuguese people did refuse to let the word die, even though it changed into something more trivial, it kept the deepness, because like I said it turned out as a people cultural identity.

Its imprinted in our DNA. Its not as trivial as one might think because there isn't a portuguese in this world that wont turn their head at the mention of "Saudade". For us, portuguese people,simplicity is our identity and we don't like very much Fireworks in music because we do valorize the feeling that the songs transmit and the vocal and instrumental talent, not the visuals. If you watch to a fado performance wich is the most traditional portugueses type of music you Will notice that the Singer and the musicians usualy wears black and the light are really soft for the visual disapears and enphatise the talent, is almost like your are been induce to close your eyes and enjoy with other sense. For us music is not to be seen but to be listening, not with your ears but with your soul. That why Salvador Sobral said that music is not Firework, music is feelings...he described us, the portuguese people: simplicity and feelings.
