- The Coronavirus bike review continues. With the world in lockdown I've not been able to put many miles on the new AJP PR7. BUT I have been able to get to know the bike a little more as well as compare it to the Yamaha T700 and KTM 450 EXC.
This is my first short distance review that covers some of the key features that I think make this bike stand out. Navigation Tablet, Kill Switch, Throttle, Seat, Side stand, Exhaust, Air Filter.

Great unbiased review of one of the truthest adventure bikes on the market. I’ve kept myself from getting ones because they’re basically the SUVs from the motorcycle world (had high hopes for the T700 but at 204kg kerb weight still not my nimble machine both for the highway and desert). The wait is over. PR7 it is. The one thing that bothers me is the loud upgrade exhaust (stock one is there for emissions only), I too am looking for a bike that will go but not kill my ears after 100 miles. Cheers keep updating us !
Thanks! I am going to stick with the OEM exhaust for the moment. It's v quiet and I'm not convinced that the fuelling is right on the power up version yet.
To be honest... i think this whole shootandride project is one of the best ting that has happend in the last couple of years. You have no idea how many skilled people i have come in contact with just because you put this thing togheter for us so "meet" each other :-) Again, thank you Greg, great video and keep up the great work you do :-) Cheer from Norway

Great Review! Looks like a very desireable bike, and I hope you are now out enjoying it. Among other things, I especially like what you said about keeping the stock exhaust because you don't think you'll need more power and that you want to have as low of an impact as you can. Good for you!

Hi Greg, nice detailed video 😁😁 just to add, the Doma exhaust and the 60hp are part of the power kit which includes full exhaust (not only silencer), ecu map and air filter cover. 👍🏼 Keep the good quality work
I have one thing to say, I'm Portuguese, and I can tell you that the pr7 is like the dream Portuguese bike made by us, because goes on road, goes even better off it. Our country is mainly dirt and beutiful views up in the mountains. Love the work and you just helped me to the decision on my first bike. Very good video, subscribing;)

There's a mod you can do on the stand to make it none suicide by removing the pin on stand bolt, just what l seen on you tube. Keep up the great work. Cheers John

Everything you mentioned about the pros and cons is correct. You answered to most of my questions. The throttle at low revs, needs improvement indeed. Another thing that I noticed, which also needs improvement, is the fuel tank cap. In some cases, when you open the lock flip, you can hear it vacuum or breathe. So be careful with that. Also, the bottom end of the cap, touches at the bottom of the filler neck. There is an aftermarket improvement with a cnc neck and a lockable screw on cap. I'm planning to replace it. Fuel Autonomy with full tank, up to the neck, is 300~320 kms, before the lamp goes on.

That is a great video review of the ajp. I’m only just down the road in Durham and all the lanes you mention are fab. I’ve not had my Africa Twin Adventure Sports up the H yet with riding solo (cheers rona). See you out on the trails soon, maybe end up doing some drone shots up the moors. SnR

Hey I’m game once I’ve brushed up my skills on her again. With lockdown I’ve not been out on the trials bike and the road riding has been very gentle. As long as it’s not deep mud she plows through everything

Nice review, you cover a lot of unique features that others seem to miss. Surely you are used to a suicide stand coming from an exc? Speaking of which....I thought getting a new bike was contingent on getting rid of the 450?
My theory is that you need three bikes as a minimum,that way you can have all bases of on/off road covered.
Looking forward to the actual ride/trip review when restrictions lift.

My KTM side stand doesn't flip up on its own - you still need to give it a kick.
Greg, the manual states that the air filter can be cleaned with the appropriate cleaning solution and should be oiled once dry. I use the no toil stuff as you can get it in a spray can which is easier to use on this type of filter.

By the way. You will be amazed how it handles off the road. It's close to the exc. But I won't say more, it's up to you to find out.
The Cotton air filter that are fitted originally are some of the best out there (other brands fx KN). Just beware of using solvent and filter oil made for cotton air filters, and do not use compressed air

Greg - You'll get used to the spring up side stand quick enough. My CCM has that and in 5½ years I've not yet dropped it myself because of that.
2 points to be aware of though!
1) If your oil sight glass is on the other side, use a bungee to the front wheel to stop the stand folding up on its own when you level the bike to check the oil.
2) Other people won't know it's got a fold out stand, and there are some that see an unusual bike and decide to lift it off the stand to see how light it is. That's happened twice to me. Once they dropped it, once I caught it just in time. So I also use the bungee to secure the stand if I'm parked at a bike shop/cafe/rallymoto event.
On the plus side, you'll never ride away with the stand down and never have to hotwire a smashed sidestand switch.
Edit: Ignore that, I've just seen the first service video, where you got the little peg ground off.
I fixed it. Simple chop of a small stop. No more flip up stand :-)

I guess the PR7 will probably become my secondary bike, next to my Africa Twin Adventure Sports, which is a bit too heavy for real off-road riding. Guess riding a Portuguese bike here in Portugal is a good idea anyhow ;-)

I think this type of kill switch is fantastic solution. Off your bike without turning key and loosing battery voltage. Looks like a very good bike for normal price.
You have two of my favorite bikes T 700 and AJP. Both are great bikes but if you compare prices - for more cash you are getting less ....
May be I should throw Husqvarna 701 in the mix .....

Looks great.. Have you tested the latest 690 enduro r? Lighter and more powerful than the PR7..
I've not actually ridden the 690. It's on my To Do list. I'll always take lighter but I really don't need more power. :-)
Here's an idea I saw someone in America do. They were more 'mature' riders and they wanted to know how heavy the bike was TO PICK UP from lying on its side (rather than dead weight) because this was something they anticipated doing often. They measured how much weight was on the lower handlebar when the bike was lying down on the ground that they would have to counter in order to lift the bike back up. They measured this by sneaking their bathroom scales outside and resting the bike over onto the scales. Bikes with lower CofG took less lifting even if their overall weight was higher.
Could you do this with your collection for comparison?

Whats your leg inseam? Since you are a short rider , did you find the AjP top heavy or the Cg feels comfortably low?
Inseam is about 760mm. PR7 feels good, similar to the 450EXC when upright. The T700 def feels top heavy.
Hi one question about killswitch.
When you stop the engine all lights and dashboard are off?
This is because the kill switch has special conetions possibilities or this can be done with any other standard kill switch?
No. The dash and lights stay on.
No... The Kriega OS base does not fit well... Due to the angular shape of the sides... I can not manage to install them steadily so if you try, please make a review. Thanks.

Hi Greg, I'm preparing a RTW trip in 2022. I'm pretty much a noob motorbike wise and was looking at a CB500x Rally Raid. Just came around this bike. Would you recommend it for a solo RTW trip? For someone without much of mechanical experience? Honda seems safer but this looks so nice for adventure: High clearance, comes ready for adventure, light ! What do you think?
People have taken these from Holland to Mongolia and the length of Africa without problems Nicolas.
It's a tough question and all depends on the kind of riding you want to do. If you are solo I think being able to pick up the bike if you are riding dirt is a key consideration. The PR7 is lighter than the CB500X. Both are great bikes. The CB500X will be more comfortable if you are doing long stretches of road riding, but you might not want to take it on more technical off road stuff. Have a great trip!
I strongly suggest that you take a look at the SWM 650 Superdual X. It has a very good Husqvarna engine, requires less servicing and it is still reasonable light, with a very low fuel consumption. Also there is the ABS, not available on the AJP.
It seems to me like the perfet match for you needs.

I would like to experiment a bit myself (being graphic designer…).
I used ND Graphic. They won't give you a template but they will help turn your idea into a design. They are the only place I could find that had templates for the PR7.
