This is an incredibly small category, usually referenced as Horror/Comedy or Comedy/Horror.
When one country fails another country has to succeed. If one country succeeds, it doesn't matter if any other country succeeds or even tries the sacrifice at all. All countries try so that someone will succeed, except in this movie no one succeeds. Every country failed. So, the end of the world happened.
Also the whore (the girls that brags about sex and has it a lot and acts like a cheerleader from teen movis/TV), athlete (the guys who wear lettermans jackets and/or are acknowledged as playing sports), scholar (the smartest of the dumb horror movie characters), fool (usually ssmokes, drinks and does drugs to the point of being stoned and therefore acting "fool"-ish) and the virgin (the more innocent characters of these groups [not necesarrily someone who's never had sex) are archetypes of how teen '90's horror like _Scream_ and _I Know What You Did Last Summer_ did. The ritual that these five characters made up were the writers parodying how the '90's horror trope worked.
Sigorney Weaver played a character called The Director. The movie itself was actually directed by Drew Goddard (also a writer in the Buffyverse), who also dual wrote it with Joss Whedon.
Also, the blood oozing down the marked walls were from vials of blood that were broken so they could ooze down the walls. They weren't from the characters themselves who died.
Ths movie was a movie where, when it came out, no one spoiled anything, and to this day, no one spoils. What people hear about it is the equivelant to a summary of the basics of many '90's horror films. People usually end said "summary" by encouraging those who haven't seen it to do so.
They do have people to take these creatures down (that's who got taken out in the "most famous scene") as they have to do this year after year and clean up the site and get the monsters back in their boxes, but every monster released at once and down below (as opposed to above at the cabin) was unexpected.
In terms of what monster I would want to see, there are too many on the list/board. And that probably isn't the full list. Just what they were and put the equivelant objects into the basement that year.

Rana:"Smoke weed or be a virgin."
Dana WASN'T a virgin though. Most of the characters didn't fit the archetype they were supposed to be.
Kurt was the Scholar(he knew all the books that Dana should read in his introduction)
Jules was not a whore or a slut, she was also intelligent, from what Marty said.
Dana had been sleeping with her professor, meaning she wasn't a virgin.
Holden was just as athletic as Kurt, with his introduction being catching the football that Kurt threw, even though he wasn't aware it was being thrown at him.

Arguably, the most 'meta' horror film ever made. It all makes complete sense once you understand that the ancient gods seeking those sacrifices is the audience that watches horror films with numerous expectations based on the genre's clichés and plot device tropes. In simpler terms, YOU are the ancient god they are trying to appease through sacrificial stereotypes. It's really kind of brilliant, and undoubtedly, one of the most original horror films ever made.

    A couple fun points.
    1. Rana recognized Amy Acker from Angel/Dollhouse, but Marty was also a major character in Dollhouse (Topher) and you briefly see Andrew from Buffy (new guy in The Trio) in the party scene.
    2. Mickey mentioned how them being drugged explains their dumb decisions and how the sacrifice archetypes matched slasher movie cliches, down to the virgin being the final girl. This could suggest/retcon that a bunch of old slasher movies were just past successful runs of this ritual , but we never got to see behind the scenes.

@@rexibhazoboa7097 Its a common meme that it is, due to the numerous similarities, but it is not actually canon. It’s kind of like how Event Horizon is the best Warhammer 40k movie. Things they have in common:
      1) Anomalous objects and entities.
      2) Said entities are contained by a clandestine organization operating globally.
      3) Lesser anomalies used to contain greater anomalies.
      4) Disposable D-Class taken from outside the organization to be sacrificed against their will to further containment.
      5) Containment breaches resulting in mass death within the underground containment facility.
      6) Advanced technology such as force fields being kept from the public.
      7) The use of aerosolized mind altering substances to manipulate members of the public.
      8) A K-Class scenario occurring as a result of a failure in the ritual containing several pluripotent reality warping pistiphages.
      9) Emotional disassociation of the staff who have become so acclimated to the horror that they treat it like a casual joke, until the containment breach.
And more. There’s definitely a large amount of overlap. I wouldn’t call it a copy, since not only does it do plenty of original stuff, but also because SCP Itself was playing off (or subverting) several horror/conspiracy tropes that predate both works, and Joss Whedon had an established history of using some of those elements (Compare, for example, The Watchers in Buffy the Vampire Slayer, who also share many of these traits). But there is enough of an overlap that you can easily imagine the movie as taking place in the SCP universe without really needing to stretch at all.

The film is a meta-commentary on horror movies and horror movie audiences, & the need for ever more gruesome deaths to appease them. Effectively, WE, the audience, are the "ancient ones" if we don't like how a horror movie is written we hate the movie, get upset, essentially the world ending in this meta horror movie.
I also love how they got the personalities of the characters completely wrong, the guy they had as the jock was a rhodes scholar, the "smart" one was super athletic, the virgin was sleeping with her professor, which I guess leaves the jester a virgin.
Now I heard about this but I don't know if it's true or not but apparently the stoner guy did not get in the lake because they couldn't have him take his shirt off because he was actually even more fit and cut than Thor and the other guy.😅

My favorite genius thing about this movie is the fact that every horror movie archetype applied to the characters were incorrect and them trying to force those stereotypes on who they thought looked correct for the role instead of playing on their already present personalities led to their demise.
Holden was given the Scholar but he was The Athlete (he’s absolutely ripped and caught a football from 3 stories down)
Curt was given the Athlete but he was the Scholar (he’s a sociology major and the books Dana had in the beginning were ones he read and could recommend to her)
Jules was given the Wh*re but she was actually the Fool (she had a very performative personality as you could see from her dare and her lap dance which she was only being hyper-sexual due to her hair dye)
Dana was given the virgin but she was actually the Wh*re (having an affair with her teacher and naturally standing in front of a wide open window and around her friends while in her underwear)
Marty was given the fool but HE was the Virgin, the one who survived, the one who (even beyond his drug use) made the right logical decisions to make it to the end of the “movie”, the one who wanted to prioritize the safety of the group rather than just having fun.
It’s such an awesome concept and Marty is one of my favorite final boys ever.

I always attributed the blood from each of the vials that they break when someone dies as, these people had already infiltrated their lives and a lot of the sacrifices seemed like genuinely good people before the insanity starts. How much do you want to bet they were all active blood donors so all the organization had to do was find out the places where they gave at and made sure those packs ended up with them for the ceremony. That was always my head canon at least.

This movie was filmed in the 00s, but it's original company shut down, so it got released after Thor came out. Ironically, this movie is the reason Chris Hemsworth got the role of Thor. Originally it was Liam who was the lead choice, but then Joss mentioned to the producers that he'd worked with this other Hemsworth brother who would be perfect. Caused a bit of a riff between the brothers for a few years.

    1) The system of the sacrifice is a collection of the typical tropes that are expected in western horror movies.
The archetypes of those various characters (the jock, the fool, the ho, etc.) are those you meet in every single western horror movie.
The "virgin" is the final girl. Sometimes she dies, sometimes she doesn't. But she's the one who remains until the end.
It *HAS TO* be like that, otherwise "the Ancient Ones" will be unsatisfied.
And Sigourney Weaver... the Director... is literally a movie director.
    2) The archetype of Japanese horror are probably different.
And the scene from Tokyo was reminding of the most famous Japanese horrors (the Ring, the Grudge, etc.).
They mention that Japan and the USA are the only ones to have had constant wins in the past, saving the day for everyone.
It's a reference to popularity of horror movies produced in the USA and Japan, which both have a big tradition.
    3) They also reference a debacle in '98.
I have no idea what they're talking about, but it's probably a reference to some horror movie that failed in '98.
Either that, or they're talking about the ending of Buffy season 1, and maybe about how it was critiqued at the time.
    I dunno.
    4) The Ancient Ones, with their very human looking hands coming down to crash the hopes of everyone, are *THE AUDIENCE.*
    Specifically, horror movie fans.
"We're not the only ones watching, kid."
    "Gotta keep the client satisfied."
The deaths, the horror tropes and even the sex scenes are there to placate these unsatiable, cruel, abominable monsters... sitting in the movie theatre.
"In 8 minutes, the sun will rise, and they will rise up wailing" (or something, I don't remember the exact quote). 8 minutes later, the movie ends, the light go up in the theatre, and horror fans will start complaining that they weren't satisfied (as they always do).
    5) "What is Dollhouse"????
    Guys. 😒
    Dollhouse reaction.
    Now. Go!
    🤣

    Fun fact about production
This movie was filmed before Chris Hemsworth was Thor, so he wasn't as famous
The Wolf make out scene used a fake wolf head, because: 1-Duh, and 2- where they filmed it was illegal to use actual animal heads; but the SFX team put sugar on its tongue, so it wasn't as bad for Jules' actress
Everyone was quite chill and having a great time in the set, including the monsters, they tried to make the movie as practical as possible
The big monster cube zoo scene had many shootings and combined with an AI that wouldn't make the boxes not collide, the boxes had everything and every size, for an example, for giants they just made a smaller box, like a giant centipede was in a teeny tiny box, making it huge in concept, there were a lot of cool tricks involved in this
Sergoine Weaver only accepted this part because the Werewolf was radical to her, and every day she was like "is the Werewolf here today?" Like a little kid

Whedon done a really good job here as Producer and Co-writer with Director Drew Goddard, who also wrote many episodes of BTVS and Angel in their final seasons. Kinda like a more gory Scream in the sense all the Horror Film Tropes are used here to great effect. A couple of Buffyverse actors thrown in here Tom Lenk who was Andrew in BTVS and Angel and also played Cyrus in BTVS too, and Amy Acker, Fred from Angel and Dr Claire Saunders in the most underrated Whedon show Dollhouse, we also has Fran Kranz here as well who was Topher in Dollhouse. A really good concept here with some crazy scary monsters, and great special effects as we never know where the film is really going. The killings are very graphically brutal, but work well within the story. All in all a good entertaining film.

So, about the Unicorn. its never been confirmed officially, but its possibly a Terry Pratchett reference. In Terry Pratchett's Discworld novel, "Lords and Ladies", a group of witches try to prevent an invasion of evil, psychotic Elves from an alternate reality. one of the harbingers of that invasion is a portal opening up and the Queen Of The Elves' pet unicorn escaping into the Discworld. and the first thing it does when it arrives is impale a man with it's horn.
I dunno when or why some marketing company decided to start putting unicorns on little girl's clothes and toys, but in mythology, they could be quite vicious creatures in some stories, sometimes even being carnivorous. the only real common thread being they could only be controlled by virgins, which lead to them sometimes being a symbol for purity. which i guess could explain the little girl thing, but who knows.

Because the mind-altering chemicals didn't work on him and he was most certainly not a fool, homie was the only one who managed to figure out what was going on and how to escape. So even if he'd died first, the world was done for because his blood had already been presented to the Ancient Ones as "the Fool" without him actually being the Fool.
Actually, when you go back, the facility starts violently shaking when they present Marty's blood. Probably for the exact same reason. I can't remember if the shaking only happens that one time, but if it does then that was the moment they actually fucked up.

We the real life audience are the ones watching them get killed, and as much as we hope they all live, if nobody dies than we hate the movie. Sigourney Weaver is the director and all the techs are the studio and production crew.
